Third Grade News
June
Dear Parents,
BURNT MILLS ELEMENTARY
Ms. Cohen * Ms. Edgar * Ms. Portillo * Mrs. Sacks
Reminders. . .
The year is wrapping up, but third grade will finish
strong. W e are planning on continuing thorough
and rigorous instruction up until the last day of
school. For 7 days of this month, we will also be
taking PARCC. Please review test taking
strategies with your child and continue to
practice math and reading skills at home!

In Reading. . .
In Math. . .
Over the next week or 2 we will finish up with
reading traditional literature (folktakes, legends,
myths, and fables). After, students will transition
into literary nonfiction. They will learn specifically
about how autobiographies, journals, and blogs
communicate information. This knowledge will
build students understanding of this text type
before they engage in journal writing.
Grade 3 students will focus on measurement
and data, geometry, as well as, operations and
algebraic thinking. We will begin by focusing
our attention back to solving two-step word
problems. Have your children practice telling
time. They will learn how to solve elapsed time
word problems. Students will also learn about
perimeter as a linear measurement as well as
finding the perimeter of 2 dimensional objects.
In Social Studies. . .
In Science. . .
In social studies, students will learn about the
decision-making process for creating a budget.
Students will discuss terms such as: income,
earning, saving, expense, and will create their
own budget plan using information provided.
Later on, students will engage in learning about
relationships among events while recording and
analyzing data.
In science, students will continue to develop
their understanding on living organisms and
their habitats. Then we will discuss and learn
about the types of resources we use: natural,
human, and capital resources to fulfill human
needs. Finally, we will transition into the flow of
matter and energy by learning about recycling
and decomposition.
In Writing. . .
Students will engage in an informative writing
process. They will start by drafting an informative
paragraph that states a current issue that affects
the world. Then, they will begin to work on an
editorial, where they state their opinion and
provide support for resources to support their
opinion. We will end the year with a journal
reflection about a struggle they had in the
beginning of third grade, and how they
overcame that struggle.
