Second Grade January Newsletter
Dear 2nd Grade Parents,
Happy New Year! Welcome back to a new year, 2016! We are so excited to begin the
New Year with your children. It is a new start and we are looking forward to create wonderful
memories with your children in 2016. In January we will finish up Marking Period 2 and start Marking
Period 3. Please continue to check your child’s backpack and student planner every night.
Reading:
Students will continue reading informational texts and
identify the main idea and the author’s purpose. We will
administer the M-class testing to find out your child’s
reading level.
Math: We will learn about money including coins and
bills. Students will be able to skip count using money,
solve money word problems, and find values of given
coins. End of January we will start learning about
measurement. Students will be able to distinguish
centimeters and inches.
Science: In science we will continue looking at minute
objects. Then we will move on to our earth space science
unit. Students will learn about the moon and observe the
moon.
Social Studies: Students will continue learning about
different cultures and traditions. Students will be able to
explain how cultures are passed down. At the end of
January, we will begin learning about how consumers use
technology.
Writing: Students will finish up their narrative writing

producing our own opinion writing pieces.
