April 2016 Kindergarten News Sargent Shriver Elementary School Kindergarten Orientation Important Dates Kindergarten Orientation for incoming kindergarteners will be held on April 28 and April 29! Current Kindergarten students will not come to school on these days. Please look for more information to come on how you can help us welcome new families to our school! Also, if you have a child who will be 5 by September 1st, 2016, please call the school at 301.929.4426 to make an appointment for K orientation. and Upcoming Events A Look at April Weeks Break Thursday, April 20th — STEM Night (6—8pm) Tuesday, April 26th– No School Thursday, April 28th– Friday, April 29th– Kindergarten Orientation - No School for Kindergarten Students We will continue to learn about the external (outside) features of humans, plants, and animals and habitats. We will learn about transportation, communication, and games/tools that we use now and that people used in the past. Reading ESOL Nook When writing, have your child talk about what he/ she will write before writing. Help them sound out the letters they hear in the words they are writing. Practice using kindergarten words that are on their take-home folder in their writing. Reminders We will work on comprehension of literary texts by asking and answering questions about the main topic and key details such as; characters, setting, sequence of events, problem, and solution. We will also work on retelling traditional stories. Please make sure to check your child’s folder daily. Please check Red Thursday folders, review and remove all papers, and send them back to school. Writing In writing, we will work on using a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose narratives. We will also work on Look for letters and notes about K orientation. Please return your child’s Data Notebook with all papers left inside. Progress reports should be coming home soon. Please make sure to check your child’s homework folder or Thursday Folder.
