Reminders
During this month of January, there will be some important testing in the first
grade. All first graders will take the mClass test for reading. The English
Language Learners will take the WIDA test, which assesses their reading,
writing, speaking, and listening skills. Please make sure that your child gets
enough sleep each night and comes to school on time each day. Also please
remember to have your child read with you or alone for at least 20 minutes
each night!

Important Dates
Monday, January 18-No School,
MLK Birthday
January 2016



Math: Students will continue to solve a variety of word problems. We
will also be adding three numbers together.
Reading: We will be ready informational text and identifying the main
idea. In our small guided reading groups we will continue to work on
strategies for decoding unfamiliar words and for comprehending what
we are reading.
Writing: In writing this month we will work on using complete sentences
as we write personal narratives. Students will add proper punctuation
and feelings to make their work more interesting to read. We will reread our work to make sure it sounds right.
Science: We will continue our work with magnets as we experiment to
see how strong they are and if they can attract through other
materials.
Social Studies: Geographers will be locating continents and oceans on
maps and globes. We will also learn more about healthy eating and
exercise.
