Science & Social Studies – Mrs. Fontana

In science, we will be discussing
the water cycle, force and
motion, states of matter, and
natural resources. Students will
learn about patterns of change
and the life cycle of a plant. We
will learn about the life cycle of
an insect and different habitats
for animals. We will be using
Science Fusion for our curriculum.
During each unit we will be doing
small experiments for the
students to have hands on
experience.

In social studies, we will be
discussing many important topics
such as important leaders,
studying the past, our
government and economy.
Students will learn about specific
inventors and how to use a map.
We will learn about producers
and consumers and how
technology is changing our lives.
We will be using a new
curriculum called Studies Weekly.
You will be able to access your
student's account from home
online.
Scientist of the Week & Famous Inventor Project

Students will be assigned the
Scientist of the Week starting in the
2nd 9 weeks grading period. You
and your student will receive a letter
home and a lab report 9 days
before the experiment is due. Two
students will present their science
experiment demonstrations each
Friday for the class. Each student
will present once. You will be given a
list of approved experiments for
your student to present in class. The
teacher will be notified so materials
can be prepared. Students will need
to practice the experiment at home
and fill out the lab report to be
turned in on their due date. This will
be taken as a project grade.

Students will pick a famous
inventor in the spring time to
write a report about and present
to the class. Students may dress
up as their famous inventor while
presenting their biography to the
class. We will spend a week
allowing students to present their
famous inventor. There will be
more information to come the
closer we get to January!
Tests




Test dates will be given two
weeks beforehand.
Reviews for tests will be
given in Math, Science and
Social Studies.
The reviews will be done in
class, as well as gone over
together before the test.
Tests for Language Arts and
Reading will not have
reviews, as these skills are
continuously taught.

Retesting Policy
If your student scores below a
75 on a test, they will go
through a review session with
the teacher over the material
before a retest is given.

Supporting your child’s learning at home



Become active in your child’s school: Help out at school events,
attend school events, volunteer in your child’s classroom, or share an
interest of yours with your child’s class.
Speak regularly with your child’s teacher: Share information about
your child, visit the school regularly, and contact your child’s teacher
when you have questions or concerns.
Encourage a positive attitude towards learning: Discuss school
activities with your child every day, speak positively about education,
encourage your child’s best effort, assign home responsibilities your
child can learn from, and take the time to listen to your child talk about
school.
Goodnight!
We are looking forward to a great year. We want
to work closely with all of you to make this year a
success. Please feel free to contact us with any
questions or concerns.
Thanks!
