LES PTA Board Minutes
October 20, 2011
The LES PTA Board meeting was called to order by Kim Braun at 9:37 a.m. The meeting
was held in the conference room at Laytonsville Elementary School.
In Attendance
Kim Braun, Kathleen Songer, Liz McClure, Patti Twemlow, Shannon Hockey, Elena
Mitrione, Linda Solomich, Angela Sammarco, Kelly Durr, Suzanne Walsh, Stacie Vodra
and Julie Knolmayer were in attendance. The meeting was open to the public. Donna
Sagona attended a portion of the meeting.
Approval of Minutes
The September 16, 2011 minutes were noted as approved electronically earlier in the
month. No additional changes were requested.
Old Business:
School Gardens: Julie Knolmayer requested $500 to clean up the bench and flagpole
area in the front of the school. A motion was made and carried to approve the
additional funds.
Donuts for Dads: The Donuts for Dads morning was reported as successful.
Message Board: The message board will be fixed by the school and the staff will be
responsible for the messages.
Fundraising: It was reported that the PTA earned approximately $2300 through the
Entertainment Book Sales. Discussion followed on the process and some of the
problems that were created by this particular sale. Sally Foster is currently out and is
due November 4th. Staff members were allowed a 50% discount on Sally Foster.
Restaurant Nights: Mamma Lucia Night is set for February 2nd, 2012. Jersey Mike’s is
set for November 10-13th, but people must present the flyer for it to apply. A deal with
the Mythos restaurant is being discussed.
New Business:
Bookfair: Stacie Vodra presented the preparations and plans for the bookfair scheduled
in November. The topic of the spring fair and some of the differences were brought up.
Further discussion about the spring fair will be moved off line until the spring fair is
closer.
Bingo Night: Angela Sammarco and Kelly Durr reported on the Bingo Night preparations
and plan.

PTA By-Laws: Suzanne Walsh presented the PTA By-Laws and discussed some of the
definitions included regarding committees. It was decided to have a separate group
meet to verify that the current processes are meeting the guidelines presented in the
By-Laws.
MCCPTA Delegate: Kim Braun presented the Teen Curfew issue the MCCPTA delegate
will be voting on. Discussion revealed that without specific information on the issue a
vote could not be formally held.
Principal’s Report: Mrs Sagona reported that the clubs started October 20, 2011 and
were well received.
Mrs. Sagona requested a stipend from the PTA for help with the Yearbook Club. A
motion was made and carried to approve the request.
It was noted that the Science Expo is being worked on with new additions this year.
Mrs. Sagona requested funds from the PTA for the leveled browsing baskets in the
classrooms. A motion was made and carried to approve the funds.
Mrs. Sagona reported that over 35 people attended Literacy Night and that she felt it
was a success and a great collaboration of efforts.
Mrs. Sagona spoke about the efforts of the staff to increase leadership opportunities in
the school and the use of PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support). Topics brought
up included the school store, kindergarten recess help, helping with SCB, Bulldog Bucks,
a school bank with checkbook, a school post office and other ideas.
Fundraising: It was suggested that an opt out be clearly offered for all fundraising.
Ideas were floated from other schools such as Blue Envelope Donations and No Bake
Gift Sales as alternatives to the traditional method of fundraising. This topic will
continue to be discussed.
Thank Yous: Thank you notes will be sent to the church for the help with parking and to
Chick-fil-a for the free coupon provided with the PTA membership cards.
Kindergarten Playground Supplies: A request for funds to replenish the kindergarten
playground supplies was made (balls, toys, etc.). A motion was made and carried to
provide the requested items.
Party Supplies for SCB: A request for funds for the SCB Halloween parties was made as
well as for some ongoing snacks. A motion was made and carried to provide these
items.
New Chalkboard in Cafeteria/Stage: It was requested that the PTA replace the broken
chalkboard in the cafeteria. A motion was made and carried to replace it.

Volunteers: The new volunteer sheet was very successful. 83 forms were returned.
Lonnie Pera was the winner of the volunteer raffle. Volunteer information is being sent
to the committee chairs by Kathleen Songer.
Treasurers Report: The treasurers report was presented for review .

The meeting adjourned at 12:10 pm.
