LES PTA Board Minutes November 18, 2011 The LES PTA Board meeting was called to order by Kim Braun at 9:38 a.m. The meeting was held in the conference room at Laytonsville Elementary School. In Attendance Kim Braun, Kathleen Songer, Liz McClure, Patti Twemlow, Shannon Hockey, Elena Mitrione, Linda Solomich, Stacie Vodra, Delia Galley, Cathleen Marose, Cindy Cacace, Carrie Bohrer and Diane Fitzgerald were in attendance. Principal Donna Sagona attended a portion of the meeting. The meeting was open to the public Approval of Minutes The October 20, 2011 minutes were approved. Old Business: Book Fair: Stacie Vodra reported that the book fair was successful and made approximately $13, 000. The volunteer process went smoothly and the One for Books was also successful. It was proposed that in the future a committee for the book fair be created since it is such a labor intensive process. The next book fair is the smaller one in the spring. The dates for next year’s fall book fair have been set at November 5-13 with some room for adjustment as necessary. Sally Foster and Entertainment Books: Cathleen Marose reported on the fall fundraising. The Entertainment Books raised approximately $2,000 and it was determined to be a lot of work and not popular. Sally Foster was successful with approximately $10,000 in sales with PTA receiving approximately $4,000. There was a lengthy discussion on future fundraising, doing donation only fundraising and the pros and cons and how it works. The issue was pending for a formal discussion in the future. Mrs. Marose will send out the annual fundraiser survey. BINGO Night: Bingo Night was reported as successful. However, changes need to be made in the future to ensure that the event falls within the county event guidelines. Food spoilage is becoming an issue from event to event so some process changes need to occur in that area as well. Suggestions were made to eliminate free dessert and replace with popcorn as well as donating any leftovers that cannot be returned to a food shelter immediately. Green Team: Gardening/Clean Up day is scheduled for Sunday, November 20, 2011. The juice pouches that have been collected earned enough money to provide 3 families with Thanksgiving meals. The Green Team is in need of large boxes and bottle caps. The landscaping in the front of the school is finished. LES PTA Board Minutes November 18, 2011 Membership: Current membership was reported at 318, which is the highest number in recent memory. Jersey Mikes Fundraiser: The fundraiser raised $131. New Business: Holiday Shop: The Holiday Shop is scheduled for December 13-15. Volunteers are needed. A thank you note will be sent to a donor in the community that donated a large quantity of items to be used at the sale. Science and Technology Fair: Patti Twemlow and Cindy Cacace reported on the plans for the 2012 Science and Technology Fair (previously called the Science Expo). Several changes are being incorporated this year to encourage kids to participate and make it more a part of the academic process. This year the school will look at the projects during the day. To incorporate this, the date of the fair has been moved to January 19 , 2012 and the time for the evening fair as been adjusted to run from 6:30-8 pm. Funds in addition to the Science Fair budget were requested to pay for T-shirts and Ribbons. The additional funds were approved. Funds for a Mad Science Assembly were requested and approved. Hospitality: Delia Galley reported that the Hospitality Committee will be providing desserts for the staff on December 5, 2011 and needs volunteers to bake or provide dessert items. Cyber News and Bulldog Bulletin: Carrie Bohrer reported that if possible we should begin the transition of the Cyber News and Bulldog Bulletin to a new person for next year so that the incoming person can shadow her while she is still here. The new person should be able to use WORD and Desktop Publishing. International Night: Initial preparation for International Night is revealing that additional funds may need to be approved. The discussion was tabled until December. Treasurers Report: The treasurers report was presented for review . Principals Report: Mrs. Sagona reported that WLES started back up under the direction of the Media Assistant, Ms. Young. The notebook carts are getting a lot of use. They are working on getting passwords sent home so that families can use the school programs at home. The Veteran’s Day assembly was a huge success. Conferences went smoothly. They are currently working on a math night for February. They are setting up a principal’s chat for both daytime and evening. Town Hall tree lighting is December 9, 2011 and the chorus will be singing. The winter concert is on December 15, 2011 and LES PTA Board Minutes November 18, 2011 the sing-a-long is scheduled for December 23, 2011.
