LES PTA Board Minutes January 20, 2012 The LES PTA Board meeting was called to order by Kim Braun at 9:39 a.m. The meeting was held in the conference room at Laytonsville Elementary School. Attendance Kim Braun, Kathleen Songer, Liz McClure, Patti Twemlow, Shannon Hockey, Elena Mitrione, Linda Solomich, Scott Frohman, Stacie Vodra and Margee Mossman were in attendance. The meeting was open to the public. Approval of Minutes The December 16, 2011 minutes were approved. Old Business: Science and Technology Fair: Patti Twemlow reported that the Science and Technology Fair was a big success. The scavenger hunt seemed to help keep the kids engaged and the inclusion of the technology displays was a positive addition. Overall, 58 students presented 46 projects. The cost was $1149 including Mad Science, t-shirts and buttons. Next steps include a meeting with staff to determine what worked and what didn’t in regards to the event and the use of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Committee to help promote these topics within the school. Fundraiser Survey: The PTA Fundraiser survey has been put on Survey Monkey and advertised on the website, facebook and the Bulldog. International Night: International night is moving forward as scheduled. Chairperson Information Packets: Email requests for information have been sent out. New Business: WLES: Scott Frohman presented the new WLES process to the board. He described the full process of how a WLES program is created and what is involved. He also indicated that they have been working on getting the WLES posted onto the website and that effective Jan 20, the programs would be published online for viewing. There was additional discussion on how to get broadcasting/publishing equipment, what equipment the school has and also how to be able to get more kids involved via clubs and other opportunities. Directory: Shannon Hockey presented a new option for creating the LES directory that would include the use of software to format the data and also include an online and mobile directory option. The proposal was to include no direct cost to the PTA, but to LES PTA Board Minutes January 20, 2012 allow the directory company to sell advertising on the inside front cover and both sides of the back cover. This would require us to move our Spring Festival Sponsor page to the interior of the directory for 2012. Concern was expressed regarding how the security was set up on the online/mobile option. A motion was made and approved to move to the new process pending answers to the security questions. Upcoming Events: The following events are upcoming, Mamma Lucia Night on February 2nd, the general PTA meeting on February 9th, the Variety Show Parent Meeting on February 16th, the Gaithersburg Cluster PTA Meeting on March 15th, International Night on March 16th and the Spring Festival, Parade and Fun Run on May 19th. Treasurers Report: The treasurers report was distributed. The new check request form is complete and will be in the next Bulldog. The new money management plan for the Spring Festival was presented and discussed. Principals Report: Mrs. Sagona was present to discuss current topics going on at LES, including, WLES, the clubs, the staff spotlight, teaching leadership habits, the SGA Million Minute Challenge, and the Souper Bowl can collection. She also discussed upcoming events including Dr. Starr’s bookclub and the PAC Meeting. The meeting adjourned at 1:48 pm. Respectfully Submitted by Shannon Hockey
