Analysis of College Student Experience in main universities of Korea Presented by Eun Kyung Kim ABSTRACT To find main characteristics which affect stude nts’ experience, data regarding students’ backgro und, college activities, and college environment w ere collected from CSEQ. Korean college students were significantly old er than American students and less active in their extracurricular activities compared to their acade mic activities. Furthermore, college environment was found to have a relatively positive influence o n college activities. Therefore, educational progra m with emphasis on personal support for each col lege student are needed. 2 I. INTRODUCTION To develop educational programs, understanding various backgrounds and needs of the students are essential. Purpose of the study was to find main characteristics which affect students’ experience that may provide basis for improving the level of quality in educational program. 3 II. RESEARCH QUESTIONS 1. What are characteristics of college students’ backgro und? 2. What are characteristics of college students’ activitie s? 3. How college environment factors affect the college st udents’ activities? 4 III. METHODS • Data Collection: To analyze the college students’ experience, data were collected from 967 students at 4 research universities. The translated version of College Student Experiences Questionnaire(CSEQ), 4th edition(1998) developed by Center for Postsecondary Research and Planning (Indiana University) was used. • Statistics: Descriptive statistics, and regression analysis were conducted using SPSS 10.0 statistical package 5 IV. RESULTS 1. College students’ background 1) Age of Student Average age of Korean college students was significantly older than U.S. college students. DISCUSSION • First, Korean students tend to stay longer in college, there is a need for special program to minimize their confusions due to frequent changes in educational system. . • Second, students were passive in their extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities that help personal and social developments are lacking. Programs focusing not only on intellectual growth but also on personal and social developments are needed. • Third, social interaction with faculty was found to have positive influences on students’ college activities. Therefore, educational system with emphasis on personal support for each college student should be developed. 16
