SERT Watt’s Up? Poster Contest
Principal’s Message
It’s hard to believe that this is the last newsletter
for 2013. Each year at RCV continues to be so full
of wonderful experiences and accomplishments
for staff, parents, and students. Here are just a
few of the things that I will remember from 2013
at RCV.
 Welcoming Julia Bialeski as our new
assistant principal and also other new
staff to RCV this year.
 Continuing to see wonderful smiling
faces of students coming to school each
day – ready for learning and excited to
be part of our school community;
 Having lots of fun and laughter at
evening events such as our annual
auction (the Wonderful Wizard of Oz this
year), bingo, the family dance, and our
Halloween costume parade;
 Watching a very talented and dedicated
group of staff implement a challenging
new curriculum.
 Having Promethean Boards installed in
every classroom and watching staff use
technology with students every day as
part of the instructional program; and
 Watching the look of excitement on
students’ faces when they learn new
things and accomplish success.
I am so very lucky to be able to look back at
another wonderful year at RCV and am so
thankful and excited in looking forward to
our work together in 2014. Happy New
Year!

Resource Conservation in
Multiple Languages
Recycling and conserving energy are two easy
ways we can help take care of our planet. This
year share your conservation ideas by
participating in the SERT Watt’s Up Poster
Contest. Create a resource conservation poster
in different languages along with English. Details
about the contest will be shared at the
December Peace assembly. Poster contest
information can also be seen on the SERT board
outside of the Media Center. Winners will be
selected by the RCV SERT team. All posters are
due at RCV on February 18th. We can’t wait to
see your green ideas! 
A Thank You to Parents For the Cookies
A big thank you to all our wonderful parents for
providing cookies for the staff on Monday. The
spread of cookies was unbelievable—and so
many varieties!! What a nice and yummy
holiday treat. We are very fortunate to have
such kind, caring families in our RCV
community.
Kindergarten Parent Tours
It’s that time again! We will
be holding several school
tours for parents of new
kindergartners who will be
starting school next year. This is a great
opportunity to come see the school, and briefly
observe some kindergarten classes. The
dates/times for these tours are as follows:
Monday, January 13, 3014 – 10:00 a.m.
Tuesday, February 11, 2014 – 10:00 a.m.
Wednesday, March 19, 2014 – 10:00 a.m.
Please call the main office at (301) 460-2195 to sign
up for a tour.
Keeping Kids Busy Over Winter Break
“Every mile is two in winter.”—George Herbert, poet
Most kids love winter break. They get time off school, and
they get to do what they want to do. Parents, on the other
hand, know that it doesn’t take much for cabin fever to start
setting in. When pushed to the limit, kids can bounce off of
walls, ceilings, and other places where parents don’t want
them to be bouncing! Here’s how to keep kids busy and keep
• Prepare for uncooperative weather. Part of what makes
winter breaks difficult is that you can’t depend on the
weather. So don’t. Make indoor plans and outdoor plans
(with a Plan B for outdoor plans
• Visit grandparents, aunts, uncles, or friends. Visiting
someone else often brightens everyone’s day—including
your kids.
Rope Warrior Assembly on Friday
The PTA was excited to bring The Rope Warrior to RCV
today! Guinness World Record Holder, David Fisher,
mesmerized students and staff with his amazing,
high-energy ropenastics show. Ropenastics is a
combination of rope jumping, dance and rhythmic
gymnastics. Students also participated in workshops
with The RopeWarrior. Not only did they do a lot of
jump roping, they learned tricks too! Please ask your
child about the performance today and about what
they learned to do.. You can also visit their website
www.rocknropewarrior.com<http://www.rocknropewarri
or.com> to learn more about David and see video
clips of his amazing jumping tricks!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE
your parental sanity over the winter break.
Tips for . . .

all parents
1-2-2014
• Plan. Plan. Plan. Too often, parents pour all their energy

into the holidays and then want to collapse afterward. If you

have kids, it doesn’t work that way. Figure out places to go
and activities to do throughout the winter break.

• Get kids out of the house. Whether it’s going outside,
going to the movies, or visiting a museum or zoo, find places
to take kids to make the winter break more interesting.
• Invite friends over. The day always goes more quickly
when kids can spend time with their friends. If kids can’t get
to your home, go pick them up and drop them off.
Winter Break Office Hours
The main office will be opened on December 26,
