Principal’s Message
Next week begins the testing window for the Maryland State Assessment (MSA) which has been
given annually over the last several years to all students in grades 3-8. This is the last year that
this particular assessment will be administered as the state will be utilizing a new assessment
next year that is more closely aligned to the academic content of the common core (which is the
guiding foundation for MCPS’s Curriculum 2.0). While many of you know that there is wide-spread
opinion about the current validity of the MSA given the current lack of alignment to our curriculum,
we still reinforce with our students the importance of putting their best effort into any test situation.
We will be communicating this message to our students in grades 3-5 as we prepare for the
testing next week and ask that you do the same if you have a child in one of the grades that will
participate in the testing. In addition, please note that there are very strict rules that mandate
certain testing procedures – one of them being that any student who is tardy may not join the
testing group once testing has begun on a given day. Therefore, it is extremely important that
your child arrive in school well rested, well fed, and on time for any day of testing. Even if your
child is not in grades 3-5, we encourage you to communicate key messages for any testing
situation such as, “I know you are smart and have a lot of information to share.” -and- “Use all
your testing strategies and show how much you have learned when you take the test.” It can
never be said enough that the effort, persistence, and hard work that students demonstrate during
learning and testing is the most important focus for school.
Reminder for Dismissal Procedures
We just wanted to remind everyone of two important dismissal procedures:
1. Please make sure to notify your child’s teacher, and the front office staff, if possible, of any change
to your child’s dismissal procedures. For example, if you have to pick your child up early for an
appointment, it is helpful for your child’s teacher to know that in advance so that they can make
sure that your child is ready for dismissal when you need to pick him/her up from school.
2. Please utilize our established dismissal procedures when you are picking your child up at 3:30.
Although we understand that some parents may want to “avoid” to the pick-up/ drop-off circle
or decide on the spur of the moment to walk to school to pick up their child rather than having
them ride the bus home; the office is not staffed to handle these end of day requests and it is also
quite disruptive to our established procedures. All staff on duty take their responsibilities very
seriously and it presents challenges when individual parents want to pull students out of a bus
line or ask the main office to call for students from a designated dismissal area. If you have any
specific concerns about dismissal for your child, please do not hesitate to let the office know so
that we can work with you to address your concerns.
California Pizza Kitchen Fundraiser
The PTA is sponsoring a fundraiser at the California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) at the
Washingtonian Center on March 26 and 27. CPK donates 20% to RCV PTA on
each order (must present flier at the time of purchase) There are no time
restrictions. RCV families can visit the restaurant all day on both days. You can dine-in, carry-out or place
catering orders. Fliers will be distributed electronically and a hard-copy will go home closer to the date
RCV PTA earns 20% from each order (must present flier at time of purchase)
2013-2014 Schools at a Glance
The report Schools at a Glance supports the Annual Report on MCPS Call to Action: Pursuit of Excellence
and provides, in a single document, information about enrollment, staffing, facilities, programs, outcome
measures, and personnel costs for each school. This publication reinforces our efforts to provide parents
and the public with data about the progress of our students and schools. The 2013-2014 Schools at a
Glance report is accessible to schools, offices, and members of the community on the MCPS website at
www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/. Hard copies of the
report will be made available at Montgomery County Public libraries.

Speaker on Internet/Cyber Safety at March 4th PTA Meeting, 6:45pm
At the Tuesday, March 4th PTA meeting, Mr. William Gale from the National Center for Missing and
Exploited Children will give a talk on internet/cyber safety. This talk will be specifically geared to the
parents of elementary school children. The talk will begin promptly at 6:45pm in the RCV Media
Center. Free babysitting will be provided by Bar-T and translation into Spanish will be available. Please
join us.
Parent/Staff Basketball
Come Join the Fun--Friday, March 14, 2014 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm
The RCV Parent/Staff Basketball Game needs parents who would enjoy participating
in a fun, less competitive game. We also need a few volunteers to help on the night
of the game. And of course we would love to have a big crowd of students and
parents to fill the gym and enjoy the event with the RCV faculty and staff. Please

Kindergarten Parent Tours
There is one remaining date left for incoming kindergarten parent tours. This is a great
opportunity to come see the school, and briefly observe some kindergarten classes. The
date/time for this tour is as follows:
Wednesday, March 19, 2014 – 10:00 a.m.

Kindergarten Orientation
Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Thursday, May 8 and Friday, May 9. On these two days there
will be NO SCHOOL for current Kindergarten students. Students must be 5 on or before September 1,
2014 in order to attend school. In March we will be sending home Kindergarten Orientation packets to
parents of incoming kindergartners, with information regarding required paperwork as well as a
date/time for you to come to Rock Creek Valley ES for Kindergarten Orientation. On these days, we will
be registering your child, and your child will have the opportunity to meet the current Kindergarten
teachers, as well as have a chance to work with them. On the day of orientation you should bring with
you:


Legal Identification (such as a passport, or driver’s license) for the parent
 Birth Certificate
Current lease, property tax bill, OR shared housing form AND 3 pieces of mail
 Current record of immunizations for student

La próxima semana comienza la ventana de exámenes del Maryland State Assessment (MSA) el cual ha
sido tomado anualmente durante muchos años a todos los estudiantes en grados 3-5. Este es el último
año en que este particular examen será administrado, porque el Estado estará utilizando un nuevo
examen el próximo año que se acerca más al contenido académico del common core (núcleo comúnque es la guia de fundación para la Curricula 2.0 de MCPS). Mientras muchos de ustedes saben que
existe una opinión amplia acerca de la actual validez del MSA, dado a la presente falta de alineamiento a
nuestra curricula, aún asi nosotros tenemos que reforzar con nuestros estudiantes, la importancia de
poner su mejor esfuerzo en cualquier situación en que se dan exámenes. Estaremos comunicando este
mensaje a nuestros estudiantes en los grados 3-5, a la par que nos preparamos para los exámenes la
próxima semana y queremos pedirles que haga lo mismo si tiene algún niño en los grados que
participarán de los exámenes. Además, por favor note que hay reglas estrictas que mandan ciertos
procedimientos para los exámenes – uno de ellos es que si algún estudiante esta tarde no puede unirse
al grupo de los que estan tomando la prueba una vez que el examen ha comenzado en el día que esta
siendo tomado. Por lo tanto, es de importancia extrema que su niño arrive a la escuela bien descansado,
bien comido y a tiempo los días de los exámenes. Aún si su niño no esta en grados 3-5, le animamos que
le envie mensajes claves en cualquier situación de toma de pruebas, tales como “sé que eres inteligente
y tienes mucha información para compartir” -y- “usa todas tus estrategias de examen y demuestra lo
mucho que has aprendido cuando tomas una prueba.” Nunca es suficiente decir que el esfuerzo, la
persistencia y el trabajo duro que los estudiantes demuestran durante el aprendizaje y los exámenes,
son el más importante enfoque de la escuela.

3. Por favor asegúrese de notificar al profesor de su niño y al staff de la oficina de la escuela, si es
posible, de cualquier cambio en los procedimientos de salida de su niño. Por ejemplo, si Usted
tiene que que recoger a su niño temprano para una cita, es de mucha ayuda que el profesor de
su niño sepa esto por adelantado, asi ellos pueden asegurarse que su niño este listo para salir
cuando usted necesite recogerlo de la escuela.
4. Por favor utilize nuestros procedimientos de la hora de salida establecidos, cuando usted recoja
a su niño a las 3:30. Aunque nosotros entendemos que algunos padres quieren “evitar”
dejar/recoger en el circulo o decidir de última hora caminar a la escuela para recoger a su niño en
vez de que ellos tomen el autobús escolar a la casa; la oficina no está dotada de personal para
manejar estas solicitudes de última hora y que también interrumpen bastante a nuestros
procedimientos establecidos. Todo el staff que esta de turno toma sus responsabilidades muy
seriamente y esto presenta desafios cuando algunos padres quieren sacar a los estudiantes de la
linea del autobús o al pedir en la oficina llamar a estudiantes de designadas áreas de hora de
salida. Si usted tiene alguna preocupación especifica acerca de la salida de su niño, por favor no
dude hacerlo saber a la oficina de manera que ellos pueden trabajar con usted para abordar sus
preocupaciones.
Recaudación de Fondos de California Pizza
El PTA esta patrocinando una Recaudación de Fondos en California Pizza
Kitchen (CPK) en el Washingtonian Center el 26 y 27 de Marzo. CPK va a donar
el 20% al RCV PTA por cada orden de compra (debe presentar este folleto al
momento de la compra). No hay restricciones en la hora. Las familias de RCV puede visitar el restaurante
todo el día en ambos días. Usted puede comer adentro, llevar afuera o hacer una orden de catering. Los
folletos serán distribuidos electrónicamente y una copia en papel irá a casa cuando la fecha se acerque.

Tours para Padres de Kindergarten
Nosotros ya hemos tenido nuestro primer Tour de Kindergarten este año, pero todavía
tenemos dos fechas, no se lo pierda. Esta es una gran oportunidad para venir a la escuela
