Principal’s Message
Recently, a couple of our families have experienced a rash of prank phone calls, texts, and other
communications through various social media sources to their home phones and personal
electronic devices. While these incidents involved a relatively small number of students and
families; it has reminded me of how the current advances in technology, electronics, and social
media have created another challenge for adults (parents and staff) to manage social
interactions and guide children as they move through childhood and adolescence. Certainly, the
degree to which a parent gives their child independent access to technology that is available
within the home is a personal decision. Having said that, I thought it might be useful to share
some general guidelines from different sources for how to manage your child’s use of
technology, including social media.
From the Center for Missing & Exploited Children, several risks and tips are shared with parents
to help guide your children in the smart use of smart phones. Risks can include: cyberbullying,
geolocation, inappropriate content of videos, sexting, viruses & malware. Ways to avoid this and
promote smart use of technology can include: setting clear guidelines for use of electronic devices
within your home and always requiring your child to use these devices in your presence so that
you can supervise their activities.
If your child loves to share videos and has access to a smart phone (or other electronic device),
there’s a good chance he/she has instagram or vine or both. Users of these programs are supposed
to be at least 13 (17 years old in order to install the app), but we have found that many children
younger than these ages have access to these programs. Once again, I can not urge you more
strongly to know what your child is looking at, who they are communicating with, and what they
are doing on the internet, social media, and other interactive sites. The following are some

In addition, we will be adding an online safety area to the RCV parent page to include these links
and other useful information for parents. If you do have concerns about messages your child is
receiving or other experiences your child has had with using the internet or social media, please
let us know. While we can not regulate what children do outside of school, we want to be aware
and work with you as partners to address any concerns that may arise.
RCV MATH NIGHT!

PTA Meeting
A big THANK YOU to all the parents who responded to the need for PTA volunteers for next year. The
next PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Traci Townsend, Principal at Wood
Middle School, will be the guest speaker.
MSA Testing
MSA testing is still in progress. On these days, just like any other day, it is important that students are well
rested the night before, and that they have a healthy breakfast to stay focused. Also, please make sure
students are able to get to school on time, as we will begin testing promptly at 9:30.
Spring Break – April 14-April 21
Spring break is fast approaching, and many families are making plans to go
on vacation. We realize that sometimes some families may go away a few
days earlier than Spring Break. If you are planning on taking your child out
of school before the break (or keeping them out after), please talk with
your child’s teacher about school work they can work on while they are out of school, so that they do
not fall behind the class while they are on vacation.
Maryland Summer Centers
Continuing a tradition of excellence for 47 years, the Maryland Summer Centers (MSC) engage gifted and
talented students entering Grades 3-12 in unique summer programs. Centers located across the State
offer one- to two-week residential and nonresidential programs with focus on the arts, sciences,
technology, engineering, and world languages. Please visit the Maryland State Department of Education
website www.marylandpublicschools.org/summercenters for more detailed descriptions of the Centers
and application forms. The deadline for applications is April 15. Directors will accept applications after
April 15 until the Center enrollment is filled.
Pre-Kindergarten Registration
For income-eligible families with children who will be 4 years old by September 1, 2014, including
children with disabilities. Walk-in applicants will be accepted Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am- 4:00
pm, at Rocking Horse Road Center, 4910 Macon Road, Room 141, Rockville, MD 20852. For information,
phone 301-230-0676 or TTY phone 301-230-5462. Please note: This is through MCPS, not Rock Creek
Valley Elementary School! Early registration is recommended. In order to register, you must bring: a
U.S. Birth Certificate or U.S. Passport, family income verification, acceptable proof of Montgomery
County Residence, Parent’s/Guardian’s Photo Identification, and any Additional Supporting Documents.
California Pizza Kitchen Fundraiser
The PTA is sponsoring a fundraiser at the California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) at the Washingtonian Center on
March 26 and 27. CPK donates 20% to RCV PTA on each order (must present flier at the time of purchase)
There are no time restrictions. RCV families can visit the restaurant all day on both days. You can dinein, carry-out or place catering orders. Fliers will be distributed electronically
and a hard-copy will go home closer to the date RCV PTA earns 20% from
each order (must present flier at time of purchase)

Kindergarten Parent Tours
There is one remaining date left for incoming kindergarten parent tours. This is a great
opportunity to come see the school, and briefly observe some kindergarten classes. The
date/time for this tour is as follows:
Wednesday, March 19, 2014 – 10:00 a.m.

Kindergarten Orientation
Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Thursday, May 8 and Friday, May 9. On these two days there
will be NO SCHOOL for current Kindergarten students. Students must be 5 on or before September 1,
2014 in order to attend school. In March we will be sending home Kindergarten Orientation packets to
parents of incoming kindergartners, with information regarding required paperwork as well as a
date/time for you to come to Rock Creek Valley ES for Kindergarten Orientation. On these days, we will
be registering your child, and your child will have the opportunity to meet the current Kindergarten
teachers, as well as have a chance to work with them. On the day of orientation you should bring with
you:

Legal Identification (such as a passport, or driver’s license) for the parent

 Birth Certificate
Current lease, property tax bill, OR shared housing form AND 3 pieces of mail
 Current record of immunizations for student

Recientemente, un par de nuestras familias han experimentado bromas a través de una serie de
llamadas telefónicas, textos y otras comunicaciones de varias fuentes de redes sociales; a los
teléfonos de casa y dispositivos electrónicos personales. A pesar de que estos incidentes
envolvieron a un número relativamente pequeño de estudiantes y familias; me ha recordado de
cómo los actuales avanzes en la tecnología, electrónicos y redes sociales han creado otro desafío
para los adultos (padres y personal) para manejar las interacciones sociales y guiar a los niños
mientras pasan de la niñez a la adolescencia. Ciertamente, el grado que un padre da a su niño
acceso independiente a la tecnología que esta disponible dentro de casa, es una decisión
personal. Habiendo dicho esto, pienso que sería de utilidad compartir algunas lineas de
orientación de diferentes fuentes, de cómo manejar el uso de tecnología de su niño, incluyendo
las redes sociales.
Del Centro de Niños Perdidos y Explotados, muchos riesgos y consejos son compartidos con
padres para ayudar a guiar a sus niños en el uso de los teléfonos inteligentes (smart phones). Los
riesgos pueden incluir: intimidación cibernértica (cyberbullying), geolocalización (geolocation),
contenido inapropiado de videos, mensajes con contenido sexual (sexting), viruses y malware.
Las maneras de evitar éstas y promover el uso inteligente de la tecnología puede incluir: establecer
guias de orientación claras para el uso de dispositivos electrónicos dentro de su casa y siempre
requiriendo que su niño use estos dispositivos en su presencia, entonces usted puede supervisar
sus actividades.
Si a su niño le encanta compartir videos y tiene acceso a un smart phone (u otro dispositivo
electrónico), hay una gran oportunidad de que él/ella tenga Instagram o Vine o ambos. Los
usuarios de estos programas estan supuestos a tener al menos 13 (17 años en orden de instalar el
app), pero hemos encontrado que muchos niños menores a estas edades tienen acceso a estos
programas. Una vez más, yo no puedo exhortarlo más firmemente, a que sepa lo que su niño esta
mirando, con quiénes ellos se estan comunicando, y qué ellos estan haciendo en el internet, las

Reserve el día—Lunes, 7 de Abril 6pm-8pm. Venga a disfrutar de una noche
llena de fabulosas actividades matemáticas con su familia. Algunas
actividades planeadas son:

 Desafía a un profesor en un juego de matemáticas

 Juegos de matemáticas de diversión familiar
Reunión del PTA
Un enorme AGRADECIMIENTO a todos los padres que respondieron a la necesidad de voluntarios para
el PTA del próximo año. La próxima reunión del PTA se llevará a cabo el Martes, 1 de Abril a las 7:00 p.m.

Los test de MSA
Los test de MSA están todavía en progreso. En estos días, como en cualquier otro día, es importante que
los estudiantes descansen bien la noche anterior y que tengan un desayuno saludable para estar
enfocados. También, por favor asegúrese que los estudiantes lleguen a la escuela a tiempo, debido a que

Las vacaciones de primavera se aproximan rápidamente y muchas familias

algunas veces algunas familias salen unos días antes de las Vacaciones de
Primavera. Si Usted esta planeando en sacar a los niños de la escuela antes
del break (o mantenerlos fuera después), por favor hable con el profesor de su niño acerca de algún
trabajo de escuela que ellos pueden realizar mientras estan fuera de la escuela, asi ellos no se atrasan
mientras estan de vacaciones.
Centros de Verano de Maryland (Maryland Summer Centers)
Continuando una tradición de excelencia de 47 años, Maryland Summer Centers (MSC) hace participar a
estudiantes talentosos y sobresalientes que entran a los Grados 3-12 en programas de verano únicos. Los
centros estan localizados a través de todo el Estado y ofrecen una a dos semanas de programas
residenciales y no residenciales con enfoque en las artes, ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y lenguas del

folletos serán distribuidos electrónicamente y una copia en papel irá a casa cuando la fecha se acerque.

Tours para Padres de Kindergarten
Nosotros ya hemos tenido dos Tours de Kindergarten este año, pero todavía tenemos
