Principal’s Message
As many of you may have already heard, the state has just recently granted a waiver to MCPS for some
of the snow days experienced this school year. As part of this agreement, MCPS is required to also make
up some of the missed days and so there will be two changes to the school calendar for the remainder
of the school year.
The first change is that our spring break will be reduced by one day and students are expected to attend
school on Monday, April 21, 2013.
The second change is that the school year will be extended for students by one day. This will mean that
students will attend a full day of school on Thursday, June 12 and a half day of school (with an early
dismissal at 1:00 p.m.) on Friday, June 13, 2014.
If you have any questions or concerns about these changes in the school schedule please contact your
child’s teacher or school administration.

Speaker on Internet/Cyber Safety at May 6th PTA Meeting, 6:45pm
At the Tuesday, May 6th PTA meeting, Mr. William Gale from the National Center for Missing and
Exploited Children will give a talk on internet/cyber safety. This talk was originally scheduled for the
March PTA meeting but was cancelled due to snow. Mr. Gale's presentation will be specifically geared to
the parents of elementary school children. The talk will begin promptly at 6:45pm in the RCV Media
Center. Free babysitting will be provided by BarT and translation into Spanish will be available. Please
join us.

presentation given by Mr. Douglas Gansler, Attorney General, on April 8, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at Shady Grove

MCPS GIVE BACKpacks Campaign Under Way
The MCPS GIVE BACKpacks campaign is under way and needs your help to raise funds to purchase
backpacks filled with school supplies for MCPS students in need. Last year, MCPS parents, staff,
and community members generously donated more than $100,000 to the GIVE BACKpacks
campaign, and nearly 15,000 students in 41 schools received backpacks filled with school
supplies. We’re hoping to serve even more students this year. A backpack filled with school
supplies only costs $10, and donors have the option to sponsor an individual student, a
classroom, a grade level, an entire school, or a cluster of schools. Additional information is

Stay Informed About the MCPS FY 2015 Operating Budget
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett has released his recommended operating budget for
next school year and is proposing a $77 million increase over this year’s budget. This is about $15
million less than the $2.3 billion operating budget Board of Education had requested. The
Montgomery County Council will hold public hearings on the County Executive’s budget
recommendation on April 8, 9, and 10, and this is a chance for parents, staff, students, and
community members to share their thoughts with county leaders about how our schools are funded.
Information on registering to speak at a hearing and/or other ways to provide input to the Council
on the budget is available at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council/.
The Board’s budget request represents a 4 percent increase over the current budget and is just 2.5
percent above the minimum funding level required by state law. The majority of the increase
allows us to provide the same level of services to a growing number of students. The budget request
includes strategic investments that will help lower class sizes in some high schools, increase the
number of counselors and other student support staff, add more technology to schools, and improve
services to English Language Learners.

College Prep Fair to be held May 10
A free College Preparation and Scholarship Fair will be held 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at the
Universities at Shady Grove, 9630 Gudelsky Drive in Rockville. The fair is intended for students in grades
6–10 and their parents. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet various colleges and universities,
learn about financial aid and scholarship opportunities and attend informative breakout sessions. There
also will be a tour of the USG campus. Space is limited, so be sure to register early! Registration can be

Boxes needed for atrium art project
Reminder - Visual artist and educator, Karen Brown (http://karenobrownarts.com), will be
coming to RCV at the end of April to work with our 4th graders. She will help them create
an original work of art to hang in our school’s atrium as a permanent art exhibit. The 4th
grade students will be making 3D bird sculptures out of recycled materials as a visual
representation of our school’s peace program and concern for the environment. Please
send in brightly-colored food boxes (cereal, cookies, crackers) as well as bottle caps and buttons to
school with your child by April 25th. These will be used to create our high-flying symbols of peace. A
box labeled "Bird Donations" will be placed in the atrium for collection. This project is funded by a
Target Cultural Arts Grant and the RCV PTA.

For income-eligible families with children who will be 4 years old by September 1, 2014, including
children with disabilities. Walk-in applicants will be accepted Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am- 4:00

Kindergarten Orientation
Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Thursday, May 8 and Friday, May 9. On these two days there
will be NO SCHOOL for current Kindergarten students. Students must be 5 on or before September 1,
2014 in order to attend school We are sending home Kindergarten Orientation packets to parents of
incoming kindergartners, with information regarding required paperwork as well as a date/time for you
to come to Rock Creek Valley ES for Kindergarten Orientation. On these days, we will be registering your
child, and your child will have the opportunity to meet the current Kindergarten teachers, as well as
have a chance to work with them. On the day of orientation you should bring with you:



Como muchos de ustedes han escuchado, el Estado recientemente ha concedido una exención a MCPS
para algunos de los días de nieve experimentados este año escolar. Como parte de este acuerdo, MCPS
está requerido a compensar algunos días perdidos y entonces habrá dos cambios en el calendario

Orador sobre Internet/Ciber Seguridad el 6 de Mayo en la Reunión del PTA, 6:45 pm

Explotados dará una charla sobre internet/ciber seguridad. Esta charla originalmente estaba

La campaña "GIVE BACKpacks" de MCPS ha sido lanzada oficialmente y necesitamos su ayuda para
recaudar fondos para comprar mochilas llenas de útiles escolares para estudiantes necesitados. El año
pasado, padres de familia, empleados, y miembros de la comunidad de MCPS donaron generosamente
más de $100,000 a la campaña "GIVE BACKpacks", y casi 15,000 estudiantes recibieron mochilas llenas de
útiles escolares. Esperamos servir aún más estudiantes este año. Una donación de $10 proveerá a un
estudiante necesitado una mochila nueva, llena de útiles escolares y usted tiene la opción de donar para

Manténgase Informado Sobre el Presupuesto Operativo de MCPS Para el Año Fiscal 2015
El Ejecutivo del Condado Isiah Legget publicó su recomendación para el Presupuesto Operativo Para el
Año Fiscal 2015 y está proponiendo un aumento de $77 sobre el presupuesto actual. Esta propuesta es

Feria de Preparación Universitaria a Realizarse el 10 de Mayo
Habrá una Feria Gratuita de Preparación Universitaria y Becas el día sábado, 10 de mayo, de 1:00 a 4:00
p.m., en Universities at Shady Grove, 9630 Gudelsky Drive, en Rockville. La feria está dirigida a los
estudiantes de los Grados 6–10 y sus padres. Las personas que asistan tendrán la oportunidad de conocer
a representantes de varios colegios universitarios y universidades, aprender acerca de ayuda financiera y
oportunidades de becas, y asistir a sesiones informativas en grupos separados. También se ofrecerá un

Se necesitan cajas para un proyecto de arte en el atrio
Recordatorio - La artista visual y educadora, Karen Brown (http://karenobrownarts.com),
estará viniendo a RCV a fines del mes de abril para trabajar con nuestros niños de 4to grado.
Ella les ayudará a crear un trabajo original de arte para colgarlo en el atrio de la escuela
como una exhibición de arte permanente. Los estudiantes de 4to grado harán esculturas
de pájaros en 3D de material reciclado, como una presentación visual del programa Peace
de nuestra escuela y preocupación por el medio ambiente. Por favor envie cajas de de colores brillantes
de comida (cereal, galletas, crackers) asi como tapas de botellas y botones a la escuela con su niño hasta
el 25 de Abril. Estos serán usados para crear nuestros simbolos de paz de alto vuelo. Una caja etiquetada
“Bird Donations” será colocada en el atrio para la colección. Este proyecto está fundado por Target

Orientación para el Kindergarten
La Orientación para el Kindergarten se llevará a cabo el Jueves, 8 de Mayo y Viernes, 9 de Mayo. En
