Principal’s Message
With Field Day approaching and summer just around the corner, I am reminded of the
importance of being active and having fun – both in school and everywhere. As you make plans
for the summer months, please encourage your children to remain active. To get your creative
energies going for how you can promote keeping your child physically active this summer, I
thought I would share some ideas I recently came across.
Go for a hike. Think of places that you might need to go this summer and walk rather than
drive to the pool, to school, to the library, wherever! Keep a journal, or draw a map of where you
hike.
Get buggy. Look for interesting insects in your own backyard or at the local park. You can pick
up a bug box from a hardware store--they're cheap; the holes let bugs breathe; and they have a
magnifying glass on one end. Get the kids to set out the boxes to contain different bugs and then
get a close-up view of their eight-legged friends.
Go on a scavenger hunt. Make a list of 20 objects in your neighborhood and go on a
scavenger hunt finding all of them. Maybe even take a camera along to take pictures and once
children have completed all 20, help them make a keepsake poster of their pictures.
Take a bird tour. Write down a list of birds that are common to your area and then go in
search of your feathered friends at the park (bring binoculars!). To attract birds, cover pinecones
with vegetable shortening and then roll them in birdseed. Hang your homemade birdfeeder by a
string on a tree branch. Then back away, watch and wait while robins, cardinals and sparrows
come to feed.
Play Frisbee. Create a game of Frisbee basketball by hanging a basket from a tree limb close
to the ground. Arm the kids with mini Frisbees and see who can make the most baskets.
Create an obstacle course. Use your lawn chairs, garden hoses, cardboard boxes or cones to
set up an obstacle course in your own backyard. Then get the kids to run through it. Use a
stopwatch to see which family member makes it through in the best time.
Silly jumps. Mark a starting point on the lawn and then take turns jumping in funny poses to
see who can get the farthest. Try jumping doing the splits mid-air, spinning around on lift-off or
flapping your arms.
Play wacky golf. You don't need expensive clubs or golf balls to have a game with the kids. In
fact, it's even more fun when you equip them with unusual "clubs" like a baseball bat or hockey
stick and different sized balls. Or, try a baseball or small beach ball, says Warner. Then set up
buckets and tin cans around the yard and enjoy the fun of each family member trying to get a
hole in one.
Go for a ride. If the kids are older and have mastered bike riding, you will all get a thrill
pedaling on a trail through the woods. Look for a fairly smooth dirt trail and don't forget that
every family member should be wearing a helmet.
Whatever you do, just have fun!

RCV Carnival
We are still in need of volunteers to help with the 4th annual RCV
Carnival! Please consider volunteering by signing up using signup genius. We'll need volunteers to be available from 5:30 until
8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 30th. Free dinner provided to all
volunteers. We have 16 games planned, a moon bounce,
obstacle course, face painting, dunk tank, great carnival food, fun
prizes, karaoke, and a balloon artist. Pick where you'd like to help - if you are having trouble
using the sign up genius, let me know at [email protected] and I will get you
started and get you signed up.
This is the PTA's largest fundraiser of the year, but we need lots
of help pulling this off.

I have it from a good source that yearbooks will be in sooner than expected. Lifetouch will still accept
checks for presale through May. We have approximately 30-40 left. They do go fast, so if you are
interested, please send your order blank and money to the office as soon as possible. The cost is $18.00.

D/HOH Preschool Promotion Ceremony
The promotion ceremony for D/HOH Preschool will be held on Friday, June 10 from 9:30
a.m. – 11:45 a.m. All parents are welcome to attend.
All Student Books are due May 30th
It’s time to check all the special places that children safely stash their library books. As
we prepare for the inventory, all student books are due in the Media Center by Friday,
May 30
Last Chance for Lost and Found
Soon, the school year will be over and any remaining items in our clothing lost and found will be
donated to a charity and/or used in our health room for students needing a change of clothes
during the school day. If you believe your child has lost an item of clothing at school, please
check the lost and found (coat hooks inside and outside of the all-purpose room) before the final
day of school. Also, if any parents are willing to volunteer to wash lost items left after the final
day of school, please let the front office know.
Special Education Parent Summit
Kimberly A. Statham, Deputy Superintendent of Teaching, Learning and programs would like to
invite parents to attend the Montgomery County Public Schools’ Special Education Parent
Summit—Leading the Way Today…Partnering for a Better Tomorrow on Saturday, May 17,
2014. This conference for parents, educators, and community partners is provided at no cost
and will be held at Rockville High School, 2100 Baltimore Road, Rockville, MD from 8:15 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. This summit is a continuing effort to engage parents and empower them as
advocates and partners in their children’s education.
Maryland Special Education Parent Involvement Survey
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) is conducting a Special Education Parent
Involvement Survey of all parents/guardians of children receiving special education and related
services. The purpose of this survey is to measure the efforts made by school personnel during
the current school year to help parents feel like valuable partners in planning for their child’s
special education program and related services. Parents will have the option of returning the
survey they receive from MSDE in a postage paid envelope or responding to the survey online.
The survey will close on May 30, 2014. You can visit www.mdparentsurvey.com to take the
survey.
Field Day
Field Day will be held on June 2nd. We are still looking for
volunteers to help make it a big success. Anyone who is interested

Mensaje de la Directora
Con el Día de Juegos aproximándose y el verano a la vuelta de la esquina, recuerdo la
importancia de estar activo y divertirse – ambos, en la escuela y en cualquier lugar. Mientras
hace planes para los meses de verano, por favor anime a sus niños a permanecer activos. Para
conseguir que sus energías creativas vayan en cómo usted puede promover a mantener a tu niño
físicamente activo este verano, pensé que podría compartir algunas ideas que recientemente
encontré.
Haga una caminata. Piense en un lugar que usted puede necesitar ir este verano y camine en
vez de manejar; a la piscina, a la escuela, a la biblioteca, donde sea! Mantenga un diario, o dibuje
un mapa de dónde le gustaría caminar.
Busque insectos. Busque insectos interesantes en su propio patio trasero o en un parque
local. Usted puede conseguir una caja de insectos en la ferretería – son baratos; los huecos
permiten a los insectos respirar; y tienen una lupa en uno de los extremos. Haga que los niños
expongan sus cajas que contienen los diferentes insectos y luego den una mirada cercana a éstos
amigos de ocho patas.
Vaya en una búsqueda de tesoro. Haga una lista de 20 objetos en su barrio y vaya en una
búsqueda del tesoro para encontrar todos ellos. Quizás pueda llevar una cámara y tomar

Haga un tour de pájaros. Haga una lista de pájaros que son comúnes en su área y luego vaya
en busca de estos amigos emplumados en el parque (lleve binoculares!). para atraer a los
pájaros, unte los conos del pino con manteca vegetal y luego enrróllelos con semilla para
pájaros. Cuelque su comedero para pájaros hecho en casa, con una pita en una rama de un árbol.

divertidas para ver quién puede hacerlo lo más rápido. Pruebe saltos haciendo abriendo las
piernas en medio del aire, dando vueltas o aleteando los brazos.
Juegue golf extravagante. Usted no necesita clubs caros o pelotas de golf para tener un juego
con los niños. En efecto, es aún más divertido cuando usted los equipa con inusuales "clubs"
como un bate de baseball o palo de hockey y diferentes tamaños de pelotas. O pruebe baseball o
una pequeña pelota de playa, dice Warner. Luego ponga baldes y latas alrededor del patio y
disfrute la diversión de cada miembro de la familia tratando de meter una pelota en el hueco.
Vaya de paseo en bicicleta. Si los niños son grandes y saben manejar la bicicleta, ustedes se
divertirán pedaleando en un sendero a través de los árboles. Busque un sendero de tierra
bastante suave y no olvide que cada miembro de la familia tiene que usar un casco.
Haga lo que haga, solo diviertase!

Esta es la recaudación de fondos más grande del año del PTA, pero necesitamos de mucha ayuda para
poder llevarlo a cabo.

Ceremonia de Graduación de los Pre-escolares de D/HOH
La ceremonia de promoción de los pre-escolares de D/HOH se llevará a cabo el Viernes,
10 de Junio de 9:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Todos los padres estan bienvenidos a asistir.
Topos los libros de los estudiantes deben ser devueltos hasta el 30 de mayo
Es hora de buscar en los lugares especiales donde los niños esconden sus libros de la
biblioteca. En tanto nos preparamos para el inventario, todos los libros de los
estudiantes deben ser devueltos a la Biblioteca (Media Center) el Viernes, 30 de
Mayo.
Ultimo chance para “Perdido y Encontrado”
Pronto, el año escolar se termina y todos los artículos que se quedaron en nuestro “Perdido y
Encontrado” de ropa será donado a la caridad y/o usado en nuestra enfermería para los
estudiantes que necesiten cambio de ropa durante el año escolar. Si usted cree que su niño ha
perdido una prenda de ropa en la escuela, por favor chequee “Perdido y Encontrado” (hay un
gancho de abrigos dentro y fuera del Cuarto de Todo Propósito) antes del último día de la
escuela. También, si algún padre está disponible en lavar los artículos perdidos después del
último día de la escuela, por favor hágalo saber en la oficina de la escuela.
Conferencia de Padres de Educacion Especial

Encuesta de Participación de Padres de Maryland Special Education
El Departamento de Educación del Estado de Maryland (MSDE) está conduciendo una Encuesta
