The Eagle’s Eye Rock Creek Valley Elementary School 5121 Russett Road, Rockville, MD 20853 (301) 460-2195 Fax (301) 460-2196 September 26, 2014 Catherine Jasperse, Principal Julia Bialeski, Assistant Principal Principal’s Message Breakfast at RCV Building on my message last week in praise of sneakers and closed toe shoes, I wanted to let you know of a great walking event that is coming in the very near future. October 8th is National Walk To School Day and once again RCV will be participating in activities on that day to celebrate and promote physical fitness through walking. First, we encourage as many parents as possible to walk to school with their children that day. For those parents who are not able to walk with their child, we will be having our community buses stop at the intersection of Russett Road and Artic Avenue in the morning so that students can walk down Russett Road to school that day. We will have staff stationed on Russett Road to supervise this. Mrs. Amos, our physical education teacher, has also planned walking activities for students to participate in during recess and P.E. class throughout the day on October 8th. So, put on the sneakers and plan to join us for National Walk to School Day! I am sure that everyone knows that lunch is served each day at school; but how many of you know that RCV serves breakfast each morning? On the monthly menu that is sent home to all families each month, you will see a small listing of breakfast items that are sold each morning in the cafeteria. For many families, having their children eat breakfast at school is a great way to lessen the morning rush that goes on at home when trying to get ready for school and work. Also, for any student who qualifies for free or reduced meals, breakfast is free. In the coming weeks and months, we will be working to expand the participation of our students in our breakfast program here at school and invite all of you to consider having your child begin participating in breakfast at school. NAACP Parent Representative Wanted We are hoping that one of our parents would be interested in serving as the NAACP Parent Representative for RCV this year. This is a volunteer position that is established at all schools throughout MCPS to encourage and monitor our continued efforts to ensure high academic achievement across all student demographic groups – especially our African American Students. Some of the responsibilities include attending periodic meetings with other representatives across the county, sharing ideas and collaborating with school administration, and sharing information periodically at PTA meetings. The first countywide meeting will be held on October 6th from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. at Richard Montgomery HS. If you are interested in serving in this position, please let Ms. Jasperse know.
