Kevin Burns and Gregg Baron Important Information 11th Annual Rock Creek Valley Auction Only one week away! This is our big fundraising event for the year. We hope all our families are able to come out to the event and celebrate our amazing RCV community. Please see the event agenda, silent/live auction items, and staff raffles coming home in backpacks today. Purpose of the event: A key component to student success is to build their background knowledge and provide them with experiences to build language. We want to use the funds raised from the auction to benefit all our students and community. One area we would like to use the funds is to have summer “field trips” for the RCV community. We would rent busses and offer all students and parents the opportunity to take fun day trips throughout the Washington D.C area. In addition, we would like to expand on the growing use of technology by our students. There are many great reading and math programs we would purchase to support the diverse needs of all our students. RCV is a Finalist in Click for Kids contest! We entered RCV in WTOP’s Click for Kids contest to win $20,000 to develop a "lightbulb lab" so students can develop critical and creative thinking skills using STEM processes for our school. We have been selected to move into the online voting portion of the contest. Woohooo! This is where we need everyone’s help. The school with the most votes wins the contest. Please forward the following link to family, friends, and colleagues. Voting begins Monday, February 15 and goes through 5 pm February 26. Anyone over the age of 13 can vote (that’s a legal thing) – kids, parents, grandparents, neighbors, you name it. You can vote one time per person/per email (so you CAN vote twice if you have, for example, a work email and a Gmail account). Please vote for Rock Creek Valley at: http://wtop.com/click-for-kids-voting/ Thanks so much for your support! Box Tops End of February is the deadline to turn in Top Box. Please bring them in if you have any. Thanks! Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Montgomery County Public Schools is taking an active role in the prevention of child abuse and neglect through early prevention and intervention education. During the month of March, our school counselor will be presenting lessons in Kindergarten, 3rd and 5th grades on the topic of child abuse and neglect. The lessons are known as Personal Body Safety Lessons and their purpose is to help students to: Develop knowledge, decision making skills, and behaviors which promote safe living in the home, school, and community; Learn skills for self-protection and identifying child abuse and neglect; Learn skills for asking for help for self and others and practice reporting to a trusted adult; and Engage in positive and appropriate interactions with peers and adults. If you have any questions or concerns about the topics that will be covered, please contact me, or the school counselor Alexandra Kissell. Our Vision We are committed to providing a safe and caring learning community where staff work together proactively to motivate and engage all students to put forth their best effort in order to achieve success. Our Instructional Focus Teachers will provide daily small group opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of content and academic language by incorporating instructional strategies focused on background knowledge and interaction.
