Homeword Policy 2014-15

Kensington Parkwood Elementary School
Homework Policy
2014-2015
Philosophy/Overview
The Montgomery County Board of Education believes that the home can reinforce and
broaden a student’s educational opportunity through parental knowledge of the
homework procedures established by the individual teacher. Research studies have
shown that the amount of time devoted to learning is related to the achievement on the
subject. Homework, therefore, is important in the student’s overall program.

Purposes/Objectives
A. The purpose of our homework policy is to ensure that each student has
the opportunity to practice and reinforce the skills and concepts taught
during their instructional day.
B. Homework activities have the following objectives:
1. Provide practice in applying concepts initially presented in the
classroom.
2. Provide opportunities for independent work.
3. Strengthen concept and skill development.
4. Provide a way in which parents can monitor the student’s
learning activities.
Duration of Homework Assignments
If you feel that your child has worked diligently for a reasonable, concentrated amount of
time and yet has not completed the homework assignment, you may permit your child to
stop working and send a not to the teacher advising him/her of your child’s effort.
The time allotted to homework will increase gradually from grade to grade. The following
is a list of approximate daily time allotments (may vary according to day and/or
assignment). The guidelines do not include basic math facts practice/independent
reading. These times are approximate. Individual student’s pace may need to be taken
into consideration.
Guidelines:
Kindergarten – Grade 2
Grades 3 and 4
Grade 5
15-30 minutes nightly
30-45 minutes nightly
45-75 minutes nightly
In case a student is unable to complete an assignment because of lack of understanding
of the work, the parent/guardian should write a note to the teacher explaining the reason
the work was not completed. The teacher will explain the work, after which the student
can be expected to complete the assignment.
