Overview
The Na tiona l Scie nce Founda tion's (N SF's) Antarctic Artists a nd W riters Pr ogram m ake s it
po ssi ble for the hum anities (painting, photo gra phy , writing, and histo ry) to be part of the
U.S. Antar ctic P rogra m. Ar tists and wr iters wor k at U.S. sta tions a nd cam ps, o ften with
scie nce gro ups but some times o n their own, to crea te work s tha t portr ay the re gio n o r
the a ctivities that tak e pla ce the re .
The Antarctic Artists a nd Write rs Pro gr am contributes to NSF 's goa l o f a dv ancing
disco ver y whil e disse minating re sults br oa dly to e nha nce scientific a nd technolo gica l
understa nding. The progra m helps reco rd the Na tion's antarctic herita ge , re spo nding to
White H ouse directio n that the U .S. Antar ctic Pr ogram suppo rt the ra nge o f U .S. inte re sts
in the region. Applicatio n pro cedur es are a va ilable o n the NSF we b site a t

The sele ction pro cess fo r the Ar tists and W riter s P rogra m is co mpa ra ble to the o ne fo r
scie nce pro je cts in tha t a pe er -rev iew panel me ets at NSF a nnua lly to ev aluate the
applica tions; this panel's adv ice he av ily influences the sele ctio ns. The a pplica nts who a re
cho sen r eceiv e fi eld suppo rt ( including ai r tra ve l fro m the U nite d Sta te s), but no dire ct
NSF funding. The progra m, while intended m ainly for U.S. ci ti ze ns, considers requests
fro m artists a nd writer s who liv e in o the r A nta rctic Tre aty natio ns but whose a pplicatio ns
de monstra te tha t thei r wo rk s will re ach a significa nt U .S. audience. The applicatio n
de adline fo r pa rticipa tion in the 2006 –2007 a ustra l summ er sea son w ill be 1 J une 2005.

Mr. Ar thus -Bertra nd plans to ta ke a eria l pho to s tha t will be use d in se ve ral wa ys: first,
the y will be par t o f the Ea rth fro m Abo ve proje ct, which incl udes an ex hibit tha t will to ur
the U nite d Sta tes ( with stops i n Chicago, Los Ange les, Miam i, a nd Ne w Yor k, a mo ng
other cities) . Seco nd, the y will be inco rpo ra ted into the Altitude P ho togra phic Libr ary ,
one of the wo rld's la rgest colle cti ons o f a eria l photo gr aphs. Third, they w ill be part of a
bo ok . Fina lly, Europea n ma gazines such as Stern, Par is M atch, and El Pa is a re intere ste d
in using the m to accom pa ny repor ts o n the regio n. The photo s wo uld be a ccom pa nie d

resea rchers, explo rer s, artists, a nd o the rs w ho ha ve spent a significa nt a mo unt of tim e
on the ice. To ma ke this antho lo gy a we ll- rounde d re pr esentatio n o f the pe ople a nd
exper iences in the U.S. A nta rctic P ro gra m, she will tra vel e xtensive ly (to S outh P ole a nd
McMurdo Statio ns, to sev era l fiel d ca mps, and possibly to o ne o f the rese arch ve sse ls) to
mee t a nd interv iew possible contributors.
She a lso intends to v isi t those site s that will be descri be d in this co llectio n (o r
co mpar able ones) : the M cMurdo Dr y Valle ys, a re mo te ca mp ( which can the n se rve a s a
represe nta tive o f o the r re mo te ca mps), a nd the South P ole . Such e xperie nces w ill he lp
he r shape the colle cti on a nd prov ide the back gro und to edit the per so nal e ssa ys tha t w ill
be include d. She will reco rd, transcribe, and edit the storie s o f those who ca nno t wr ite
do wn their e xperie nce s. The final pr oduct, a bo ok -length colle ctio n o f perso nal essay s,

She w ill pro duce a ser ies of po ems and v isua l images that will be published and e xhibite d
to gether. She will e xplo re the myths a nd re alitie s o f Antar ctica thro ugh w ords a nd visua l
images in a n a tte mpt to arriv e at a dee pe r understa nding o f its a biding hold on the
huma n ima gi na tion. This wo rk will be crea ted in response to the a nta rctic la ndsca pe a s
well as to the histo ry o f Antarctica a nd the interna l la ndsca pe s o f the pe ople who a re
dra wn to wo rk ther e. She write s bo th lyri c (m editativ e, pe rsonal) a nd narr ative po ems,
and her prev ious visual wo rk ha s be en do ne prima rily in pa stels. H owe ve r, she intends to
ca pture the sta rkness and grandeur of the la ndscape in w ater co lo rs, a mo re e the rea l
medium.
She pla ns to tra vel with gra nte es in their fieldwo rk whenev er possible and sa il o n the
resea rch ship Laurence M. Gould, e spe cia lly if it goe s to P alm er Statio n v ia the Ge rlache
and Bra nsfie ld Stra its. She also pla ns to stay o ve rnight in a tent at Old P alm er Statio n

South P ole fro m a number o f va ntage po ints, both inside and o utside, to undersco re the
spa ce be twee n life support a rchite ctur e and e xtre me clima te. She plans to juxta pose
se em ingly dispa ra te view s within the sam e fr ame ( reflectio ns, indo or a nd o utdo or
lighting, inte rio r space s a ga inst la ndscape) to undersco re the som etime s co ntra dicto ry
inte rsectio ns of techno logy , cul ture , nature , and tim e unique to the Anta rctic. The title of
the ser ies —Vast Acti ve Liv ing Inte lligence Syste m —is borr owe d from scie nce fiction
writer P hilip K. Dick.
Ano ther objective is to depict the interse ction o f the re al and v irtua l worlds, tha t is, the
impa ct o f the influx o f com munica tions a nd ne w te chno logies o n scientifi c inve stiga tion
and com munity li fe a t the statio n.
With their perm ission, she will pho tograph a range of subjects— scie ntists, co nstructio n
work ers, support pe rso nnel, and so o n— and, whenev er po ssibl e, wil l a cco mpany them to
ne arby sites. She a lso ho pes to tak e ae rial shots fro m the co ckpit o f the plane at a rriva l
and departure a nd ae rial v iews of the So uth Po le itself.
Before she le av ing fo r Anta rctica, she will ta lk with e nginee rs a nd constructio n per so nne l
to refine he r ide as and co nta ct the Fe rra ro Cho i a rchi te ctur al fir m to fa milia rize herse lf
with the co nce pts tha t w ent into form ul ating their design.

The boo k will be divide d into fo ur par ts: pa st, pr esent, futur e, a nd afterlife. It aims to
giv e rea de rs a go od sense of the v arie ty o f the landsca pe and the ma ny diffe rent kinds of
scie nce tha t a re being done . To tha t e nd, she ho pe s to v isit a r ange o f diffe rent field
