Since taking over the program for the 2008 season, Liberty has won 35 or more games twice and last season posted only the second 40-win campaign in the 37-year history of the program. The Flames notched a 110-66-1 record during his first three seasons on Liberty Mountain. On May 2, 2010, Toman recorded his 100th career victory, as the Flames defeated GardnerWebb, 10-7, at Worthington Stadium. The sixth coach in program history, Toman became the fastest Liberty baseball head coach to amass the milestone, passing first coach Al Worthington, by reaching his 100th win in 160 games, six fewer than Worthington. The impressive strides made by the program have not gone unnoticed. This past November, Rivals.com cited Liberty as one being one of college baseball’s top 10 rising programs. Last season, the Flames had their best season under Toman, posting a school record for wins in a single season with a 42-19 record. The team’s ledger was boosted by a 21-8 road mark, the nation’s 10th-best road record in 2010. In addition, Liberty recorded a 19-7 mark in Big South play, eclipsing its record of the previous season for most victories by the school since joining the conference in 1992. The Flames finished second in the league’s regular season and were conference runner-up at the Big South Baseball Championship. Pitcher Shawn Teufel became the fourth player from one of Toman’s Liberty squads to be taken in the MLB Draft. The two-time Big South all-conference first team pitcher and National Pitcher of the Year Watch list member capped a strong senior campaign by being selected by the Detroit Tigers. In 2009, Liberty recorded a 33-21 overall record, while posting a 17-9 mark in Big South Conference play. Liberty set a new fielding standard in 2009, committing the fewest errors, 53, and finishing the year with the highest fielding percentage, .974, in team history. From that infield, third baseman Tyler Bream was named a Freshman All-American by the Collegiate Baseball News. Pitcher Andrew Wilson became the third player during Toman’s time at Liberty to be taken in the MLB draft (Atlanta Braves). In 2008, the Flames fashioned a 13-3-1 record in the month of May to finish Toman’s first season at Liberty with a 35-26-1 mark. The record made Toman the winningest first-year coach in the program’s history. He guided the Flames to their third straight Big South Championship title game appearance, claiming the conference’s runner-up position in 2008. Liberty’s May record was the best ever by a Flames team. In addition, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing batters during the year. The Flames’ strikeout total led the Big South Conference and their 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season’s end. Two pitchers from the staff, Ryan Page and David Stokes, went on to be drafted and play in the professional ranks. Page was taken in the 20th round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, while Stokes was picked in the 28th round by the Detroit Tigers. Liberty finished its season with a 14-7 record in conference play. The mark allowed the Flames to claim the No. 2 seed for the Big South Championship, their highest seed for the Big South Baseball Championship since a No. 1 seed in 2000. Liberty would go on to post four consecutive doubledigit victories during six games in the Big South Championship to set a championship record with 55 runs scored. Toman was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Liberty Baseball program in June 2007, after 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990 season at N.C. State. During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and coached the catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 22-year college coaching veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman served under Tanner for seven years at N.C. State. Toman has recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. During his final years with the Gamecocks, he recruited many of the players who were members of the 2010 South Carolina National Championship team. From 2003-2006, three of the four Gamecock recruiting classes were ranked first in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. During his time on the staff in Columbia, S.C., Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA Regional appearances, including eight straight between 2000 and 2007, and three consecutive trips to the College World Series (2002-04). Add in his seven seasons at N.C. State, and Toman has helped lead 14 teams to NCAA Regional appearances. Toman was a four-year letterwinner at N.C. State from 1981-84, and served as team captain of the Wolfpack his junior and senior seasons. 2011 Liberty Flames Roster No. Name Pos. During his time at Liberty, he has guided the Flames to a 142-85-1 record. He led the Flames to the best mark of any Liberty head coach over his first three seasons on Liberty Mountain. Last season, the Flames had their best year under Toman, posting a school record for wins in a single season with a 42-19 record. The team’s ledger was boosted by a 21-8 road mark, the nation’s 10th best road record in 2010. In addition, Liberty recorded a 19-7 mark in Big South play, eclipsing its record of the previous season for most victories by the school since joining the conference in 1992. The Flames finished second in the league’s regular season and were conference runner-up at the Big South Baseball Championship. Radford Head Coach Joe Raccuia, a 1995 Radford graduate, is in his fourth season at his alma mater. In each of his three years the Highlanders have improved on their win total, including a 29-win campaign in 2010, the second-most single-season wins in school history. Entering the 2011 season, Radford is the only Big South school to improve its win total each season over the last five years. His path back to Radford was a busy one, ranging from the head coaching job at Marist to an assistant’s position at Alabama. In each case, he had a successful run, setting the stage for his return to his alma mater. All-Time Series Against Radford Thursday’s meeting will be the 74th meeting between the Flames and the Highlanders on the baseball diamond. Liberty holds a 47-26 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 1985. Last season, the Flames swept a three-game series at Radford, 10-2, 3-1 and 7-6, April 9-11. Current Liberty starting pitchers Keegan Linza and Steven Evans recorded wins in the series. In last meeting between the teams at Worthington Stadium, May 14-15, 2009, the Highlanders picked up their only two regular season victories over the Flames since 2004. After Liberty won the first game, 9-8, Radford took both ends of a doubleheader on May 15, 5-3 and 7-5, to win the three-game series. The Flames are 20-3 against the Highlanders since 2005. Over 30 Wins With a 6-4 win at Gardner-Webb May 14, Liberty has recorded 30 wins in a season for the seventh consecutive season, and each of its four years under head coach Jim Toman. It is the first time in the 38-year history of the program, the Flames have won 30 or more games seven-straight years. Last season, the Flames posted a school-record 42-19 mark to record its sixth-straight season of 30 wins or more. It was the first time Liberty had accomplished the six-year feat. The 42 victories eclipsed the previous school standard of 40 set by the 1983 Liberty team. It was the second time in the program’s history a team posted 40 or more wins in a year. Before this current streak started, the Liberty baseball program had never won 30 or more games for four consecutive years. Previously, the Flames had posted 30 or more victories for three consecutive seasons from 2000-02. Liberty.............................................. Burning Up the Base Paths The Flames enter Thursday’s game with 107 stolen bases, the most by a Liberty team since 2002, when the Flames stole 111 bases in 59 games. Liberty’s 107 stolen bases leads the Big South Conference in the category. The Flames were ranked sixth in the nation in the latest NCAA Division I statistical report, for games played through May 8. Liberty has taken advantage of its team speed, nearly doubling its stolen base total from a year ago. The Flames have stolen 107 bases in 137 attempts this season, compared to 2010, when the Flames swiped 57 stolen bases in 80 attempts during the entire year. Leading the way for the Flames is center fielder Ian Parmley with 25 stolen bases. The Liberty outfielder is second in the Big South and 29th nationally in the category. Parmley’s 25 steals are the most by a Liberty player since 2004, when outfielder Jeremiah Boles had 31 stolen bases. In addition, Parmley has moved into a tie for ninth on the program’s single season list with former Liberty shortstop Joey Monahan, who had 25 in 2002. Gary Wagner holds the school record with 46 stolen bases in 1983. The Flames’ stolen base totals are definitely a stark contrast from last season. Not only has Liberty surpassed last year’s season total, but individually four Flames have more steals than outfielder Curran Redal, who led the 2010 team with a season total of 13 stolen bases. Joining Parmley is catcher Casey Rasmus, who has 18 stolen bases this season despite playing in 39 games. Rasmus is sixth in the conference in the category. Outfielder Michael Robertson and shortstop Matt Williams have also reached double-digit totals. Robertson is tied for seventh in the conference with 16 stolen bases, while Williams has 14 steals. Picking Up the Pace With new bats and new rules to speed up time between innings and govern mound visits, the time Flames contests have been played in this season has seen a significant drop. So far this season, Liberty games have run an average of 2:30, compared to 2:50 at this point in 2010, an 20-minute difference. Last season through 52 games, Liberty had already played 17 games which lasted three hours or longer, with the longest being 3:43 in a 14-13, 10 inning setback to Manhattan on March 20. This season, the Flames have had only six games go over three hours, the longest being 3:26 in a wild, come-from-behind, 14-9 victory at High Point, April 10. Liberty scored seven times in the ninth inning to erase a 9-7 deficit, en route to the win. Weekend Trio Getting It Done Entering this weekend, Liberty pitchers John Niggli, Steven Evans and Keegan Linza have established themselves as a trio to reckon with. The three weekend starters for the Flames have combined to post a 19-6 record with a 2.81 ERA over 250 1/3 innings in 36 starts, so far this season. They have also combined for nine complete games, with Linza going the full nine innings four times this year and Evans three. Linza is among the Big South leaders in several categories. The senior right-hander leads the conference with nine wins and 90 innings pitched. He is fourth in the league with a 2.23 ERA. Evans and Niggli also have their names on several of the Big South lists. Niggli is 10th in opponent batting average (.249) and ERA (3.21). Evans is second in innings pitched (881/3) and third in strikeouts (74) . He also ranks fourth in the Big South in opponent batting average (.223). When the Flames ... The junior begins the weekend having thrown out 41% (17-of-42) of would-be base stealers in 40 games. He is third in the Big South in runners caught stealing despite having his playing time curtailed due to injury. Baker Has Been Big In his first season in a Liberty uniform, pitcher Garrett Baker has established himself as the workhorse of the Flames’ relief corps. The junior left-hander has made a team-leading 21 appearances, posting a 6-4 record with two saves and a 3.08 ERA in 47 1/3 innings. Of his 21 appearances, three have been starts. In addition, Baker has struck out 39 and walked only four batters. He leads the conference with 0.68 walks allowed per nine innings and was ninth nationally in last week’s NCAA Division I statistical report. Over the last four conference weekends, Baker has been the first pitcher summoned from the Liberty bullpen in seven of the 12 games, recording a 3-1 record and two saves with a 0.51 ERA in 17 2/3 innings. He has struck out 15 batters and walked one, holding opponents to a .161 batting average over the stretch. For the year, Baker has allowed only six of 26 inherited runners to score. Williams Moves Up on Career 2Bs List Shortstop Matt Williams continues to climb the school’s Top 10 career doubles list. With 15 doubles on the year, Williams now has 49 two-base hits in his career, tying former Liberty standout Jason Benham (1995-98) for sixth place on the all-time list. Former Liberty outfielder Phillip Laurent (2003-06) holds the school career record for two-base hits with 68. He also set the single-season record with 27 in 2006. Williams’ Liberty teammate Tyler Bream has also moved into the Top 10 career doubles list this season. With 46 two-base hits, the Flames third baseman ranks eighth on the school’s career list. Bream is tied with former Liberty catcher David Benham (1995-98) and second baseman Michael Just (2003-06). Evans Continues to Climb Up Career Lists For the second straight outing, Liberty senior Steven Evans went the distance in a 6-4 victory over Gardner-Webb last Saturday. The win was the 25th of his career, moving him into second place on Liberty’s all-time victory list. Former Flames standout Lee Guetterman (1978-81) is the program’s career leader with 29 career wins. In addition, with nine innings of work, Evans moved into third all-time at Liberty with 310 1/3 innings pitched. The left-hander sits behind former teammate Dustin Umberger, who pitched 317 2/3 innings from 2006-10. Guetterman also heads up that list with 334 2/3 innings pitched during his time at Liberty. Earlier this season, Evans moved into second on the program’s all-time strikeout ledger. Currently, the left-hander has 259 career strikeouts. Only Mike Brown (1994-97), Liberty’s career strikeout leader with 287, has compiled more. Evans is currently third in the Big South with 74 strikeouts this season. A fixture of the Flames’ pitching staff over the past four years, Evans has a 25-10 record, four saves and a 3.48 ERA during his career. The left-hander has walked 96 batters for a 2.70 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio during his career. Pleading the Fifth The fifth inning has become a pivotal inning for the Flames this season. Liberty is 28-8 when leading or tied with an opponent through five innings this season. Meanwhile, the Flames are 4-12 when trailing after the fifth inning. Liberty has outscored its opponents, 40-20, during the fifth inning. It is the biggest scoring differential for the Flames of any inning this season. The win allowed the Flames to take the three-game series, two games to one. Starter Keegan Linza recorded his ninth win of the season, allowing one run on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out four batters and walked one. Relievers Garrett Baker and Dane Beakler each stranded a runner at third base in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the win. Beakler picked up his third save of the year. Center fielder Ian Parmley had two hits and scored a run, while second baseman Zack Haley had two hits with a RBI and run scored. A day earlier, designated hitter Justin Sizemore put the Liberty Flames into the lead with a two-run home run, backing a complete game by Steven Evans in a 6-4 win over the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Evans went the full nine innings for his second-straight outing and third time this season, running his record to 6-3 on the year. The senior left-hander allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one. The win was the 25th career victory for Evans, moving him into second on the all-time Liberty list. He also moved into third on school’s career innings pitched list with 310 1/3. Sizemore hit his fourth home run of the year during a three-run fifth for the Flames. The round tripper came with two outs and Liberty trailing 3-2. Liberty had 11 hits in the game. Catcher Casey Rasmus, right fielder Michael Robertson, Parmley and Sizemore had two hits apiece for the Flames. Two-HR Games Abound Over 10-Day Stretch Three Flames hit two home runs in a game over a stretch of 10 days from April 1726. Before the stretch, no Liberty player had connected for more than one round tripper in a game this season. Designated hitter Justin Richardson became the first Flame to hit two home runs in a game this season in a 7-1 win over Presbyterian College during the first game of a doubleheader, April 17 at Worthington Stadium. The blasts were his first and second round trippers of the year. Richardson belted solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings of the contest. Catcher Jeff Jefferson followed six days later in an 8-6 victory over VMI in game one of a doubleheader at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington, Va., April 23. Jefferson lined a solo home run in the fifth and tied the game at 6-6 in the ninth inning with another solo home run. In the come-from-behind victory at VMI, the Flames hit five home runs, their most in a contest this season. Outfielder Ryan Cordell became the third player with a multi-home run game April 26 at No. 2 South Carolina. The first two hits of his collegiate career, the outfielder hit round trippers in the fourth and eight innings. Last season, Liberty only had one multiple-home run game. Third baseman Tyler Bream hit two round trippers, including a two-run, walk-off home run in the last game of the season at Worthington Stadium, a 7-6 victory over VCU on May 18, 2010. The Williams round tripper was his second walk-off home run in seven days. On April 29 at Worthington Stadium, the shortstop ripped the first pitch he saw leading off the 12th inning into the left field bullpen for a 3-2 win over the Le Moyne Dolphins. Trailing 2-0 and held to three hits, Liberty reversed its fortunes in the ninth inning. Center fielder Ian Parmley, who was 3-for-3 in the game, led off the inning by beating out a grounder deep in the hole between shortstop and third base for a hit. After Parmley advanced to third base on an errant throw by Dull on a pickoff attempt, right fielder Michael Robertson laced a liner into the left field corner for a double, plating Parmley. Williams followed by ripping his sixth home run of the season over the left center field wall for the victory. Left-hander Garrett Baker moved to 6-3 on the season, pitching 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out two batters and walked one. After being summoned from the bullpen in the seventh inning, Baker struck out the next batter with the bases loaded and two out to end the scoring threat. Doug Bream Receives National, Conference Honors The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named Liberty senior outfielder Doug Bream and Clemson junior shortstop Brad Miller National Co-Hitters of the Week, April 12. The Flames outfielder was also selected to the College Baseball Foundation’s National All-Star Line-Up, as well as being named the Southeast Regional Player of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com and the Big South Player of the Week for games played through April 10. During the week, Bream batted .737 (14-19) with six runs scored, eight RBIs, two doubles, one triple and two walks in four games. The senior had four or more hits in three of the games, including a 5-5 day in a midweek contest with James Madison on April 6. After picking up a hit and RBI at High Point on April 8, Bream had four hits in each of Liberty’s weekend wins over the Panthers. The outfielder went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs in 9-0 win on April 9 and was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs in Liberty’s 14-9 victory on April 10. He finished the week with a .762 on-base percentage and a .947 slugging percentage. Beakler’s Effort Highlights Wins Against UNO Liberty took two games from the New Orleans Privateers at Worthington Stadium during the Liberty Tournament, April 30-May 1. The Flames won April 30, 3-2, and May 1, 5-2. Right-hander Dane Beakler’s effort was the key to Liberty’s win on April 30. Making his first start since May 16, 2006, Beakler recorded the first complete game of his career. The senior right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits over the full nine innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. After New Orleans tied the game in the fifth inning, the right-hander did not allow a runner to reach base, retiring the last 14 batters to face him in the contest. First baseman Austin Taylor hit his fifth home run of the year to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning in the 3-2 win. On May 1, left fielder Ryan Cordell and third baseman Zack Haley each had three hits, leading the Liberty Flames to a 5-2 victory. Cordell had three hits in a game for the first time as a collegian. The left fielder went 3-for-3 in the contest, scoring twice. Haley matched his teammate by going 3-for-3 and plating two runs. Blake Forslund recorded his first victory with four scoreless innings, while reliever Jacob Kemmerer followed with four scoreless frames in the victory. 2011 Big South Pitching Leaders (through 5/18) ERA Name, Team 1. With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 12th inning, Williams belted the first offering from Dolphin pitcher Ed Kohout over the left field wall for the 3-2 victory. The home run was the shortstop’s team-leading fifth of the year. Liberty starter Steven Evans did not figure in the decision. However, he moved into second place in the school’s strikeout list with eight strikeouts in the game. The lefthander has 244 career strikeouts. Mike Brown holds the Liberty career mark with 287 strikeouts from 1994-97. Mark Swanson recorded the win to move to 2-1 on the year. The senior right-hander pitched four scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Two days later, right-hander Keegan Linza capped a 4-0 weekend with a complete game, leading the Flames to a 5-1 win over the Le Moyne Dolphins at Worthington Stadium in the final game of the Liberty Tournament. Linza recorded his fourth complete game of the season, running his mark to 7-3 on the year in the victory. The senior right-hander gave up an unearned run on six hits. He struck out seven and walked two batters. Linza allowed only one hit during the last five innings. Liberty totaled eight hits in the game. Designated hitter Justin Richardson led the Flames with two hits. Flames Take Two From VMI The Liberty Flames rallied with three runs in the ninth inning and catcher Jeff Jefferson hit two home runs, downing the VMI Keydets, 8-6, in the first game of a doubleheader, April 23 at Gray-Minor Stadium. The win enabled the Flames to take the first two games of a three-game Big South series with the Keydets. Liberty hit five home runs in the contest, the most by the Flames this season. Liberty had previously hit three round trippers in a game in a 7-1 win over Presbyterian College in the first game of a doubleheader on April 17. Trailing 6-5, the Flames plated three runs in the top of the ninth to take an 8-6 lead. With one out, catcher Jeff Jefferson belted his second home run of the game and fourth of the year to left field, tying the contest at 6-6. Second baseman Zack Haley followed with a home run inside the left field foul pole, putting Liberty on top for the second time in the game, 7-6. Right fielder Michael Robertson singled to right field to plate center fielder Ian Parmley, who had reached on a double, for an 8-6 advantage. Reliever Garrett Baker retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to close out the victory. It was his second victory in two days. The win was Liberty’s seventh consecutive victory in Big South play. Locked in a pitcher’s duel the night before, Robertson beat out a two-out, infield single to score the go-ahead run as the Flames defeated the VMI Keydets, 3-2, in the opening contest of the series. Tied at 2-2, Liberty pushed across a run to break the deadlock in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Robertson beat out a chopper behind the mound for an infield single, to score a run for a 3-2 edge.
