Head Coach Jim Toman
Record at Liberty:141-85-1 (.623) (Fourth Year)
Career Record: Same
After leading his team to a school-record 42 victories in 2010, Jim Toman enters his fourth year
at Liberty with the best mark of any Flames head coach over his first three years.
Since taking over the program for the 2008 season, Liberty has won 35 or more games twice
and last season posted only the second 40-win campaign in the 37-year history of the program. The
Flames notched a 110-66-1 record during his first three seasons on Liberty Mountain.
On May 2, 2010, Toman recorded his 100th career victory, as the Flames defeated GardnerWebb, 10-7, at Worthington Stadium. The sixth coach in program history, Toman became the fastest Liberty baseball head coach to amass the milestone, passing first coach Al Worthington, by
reaching his 100th win in 160 games, six fewer than Worthington.
The impressive strides made by the program have not gone unnoticed. This past November,
Rivals.com cited Liberty as one being one of college baseball’s top 10 rising programs.
Last season, the Flames had their best season under Toman, posting a school record for wins
in a single season with a 42-19 record. The team’s ledger was boosted by a 21-8 road mark, the
nation’s 10th-best road record in 2010.
In addition, Liberty recorded a 19-7 mark in Big South play, eclipsing its record of the previous
season for most victories by the school since joining the conference in 1992. The Flames finished
second in the league’s regular season and were conference runner-up at the Big South Baseball
Championship.
Pitcher Shawn Teufel became the fourth player from one of Toman’s Liberty squads to be taken
in the MLB Draft. The two-time Big South all-conference first team pitcher and National Pitcher of
the Year Watch list member capped a strong senior campaign by being selected by the Detroit
Tigers.
In 2009, Liberty recorded a 33-21 overall record, while posting a 17-9 mark in Big South Conference play. Liberty set a new fielding standard in 2009, committing the fewest errors, 53, and
finishing the year with the highest fielding percentage, .974, in team history. From that infield, third
baseman Tyler Bream was named a Freshman All-American by the Collegiate Baseball News.
Pitcher Andrew Wilson became the third player during Toman’s time at Liberty to be taken in
the MLB draft (Atlanta Braves).
In 2008, the Flames fashioned a 13-3-1 record in the month of May to finish Toman’s first season at Liberty with a 35-26-1 mark. The record made Toman the winningest first-year coach in the
program’s history. He guided the Flames to their third straight Big South Championship title game
appearance, claiming the conference’s runner-up position in 2008. Liberty’s May record was the
best ever by a Flames team.
In addition, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing batters during the year. The Flames’ strikeout total led the Big South Conference and their 8.2
strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season’s end. Two pitchers from the staff,
Ryan Page and David Stokes, went on to be drafted and play in the professional ranks. Page was
taken in the 20th round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, while Stokes was picked in the
28th round by the Detroit Tigers.
Liberty finished its season with a 14-7 record in conference play. The mark allowed the Flames
to claim the No. 2 seed for the Big South Championship, their highest seed for the Big South Baseball Championship since a No. 1 seed in 2000. Liberty would go on to post four consecutive doubledigit victories during six games in the Big South Championship to set a championship record with
55 runs scored.
Toman was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Liberty Baseball program in June
2007, after 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South Carolina.
Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990 season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and coached the
catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 22-year college coaching
veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant
Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman served under Tanner for
seven years at N.C. State.
Toman has recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. During his final years with the Gamecocks, he recruited many of the players who were members of the
2010 South Carolina National Championship team. From 2003-2006, three of the four Gamecock
recruiting classes were ranked first in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.
During his time on the staff in Columbia, S.C., Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA
Regional appearances, including eight straight between 2000 and 2007, and three consecutive
trips to the College World Series (2002-04). Add in his seven seasons at N.C. State, and Toman
has helped lead 14 teams to NCAA Regional appearances.
Toman was a four-year letterwinner at N.C. State from 1981-84, and served as team captain of
the Wolfpack his junior and senior seasons.

The Coaches
Liberty Head Coach Jim Toman is in his fourth year at the helm of the Flames. During
his time at Liberty, he has guided the Flames to a 141-85-1 record. He led the Flames to
the best mark of any Liberty head coach over his first three seasons on Liberty Mountain.
Last season, the Flames had their best year under Toman, posting a school record
for wins in a single season with a 42-19 record. The team’s ledger was boosted by a 21-8
road mark, the nation’s 10th best road record in 2010.
In addition, Liberty recorded a 19-7 mark in Big South play, eclipsing its record of the
previous season for most victories by the school since joining the conference in 1992. The
Flames finished second in the league’s regular season and were conference runner-up at
the Big South Baseball Championship.
VCU Head Coach Paul Keyes is in his 17th year with the Rams. He enters Tuesday’s
game with a 568-400-1 during his tenure at VCU. He is the winningest coach in program
history. Keyes has led the Rams to the NCAA tournament eight times in the past 12 seasons and has been named CAA Coach of the Year four times.
Last season, the Rams posted 34-26-1 and won the CAA tournament, earning a
NCAA Regional berth in the Charlottesville, Va. regional.
All-Time Series Against VCU
Tuesday’s meeting will be the 42nd contest between the Rams and Flames on the
diamond. VCU holds a 28-23 advantage in the all-time series.
Earlier this season, Liberty third baseman Tyler Bream hit a two-run home run and
drove in three runs and left fielder Doug Bream had three RBIs in an 11-1 Flames victory
over the Rams at the Diamond in Richmond, Va., on March 29.
Last season, Liberty took both meetings between the teams. The Flames won at the
Diamond on March 31, 7-4. Later in the year, Liberty won 7-6 on a Tyler Bream’s two-run
walk-off home at Worthington Stadium on May 18.
The Flames have won four of the five meetings between the teams during Liberty
head coach Jim Toman’s tenure and are 7-2 against VCU since 2005.
Over 30 Wins
With a 6-4 win at Gardner-Webb this past Saturday, Liberty had recorded 30 wins in a
season for the seventh consecutive season, and each of its four years under head coach
Jim Toman. Its the first time in the 38-year history of the program, the Flames have won
30 or more games seven-straight years.
Last season, the Flames posted a school-record 42-19 mark to record its sixth-straight
season of 30 wins or more. It was the first time Liberty had accomplished the six-year
feat. The 42 victories eclipsed the previous school standard of 40 set by the 1983 Liberty
team. It was the second time in the program’s history a team posted 40 or more wins in a
year.
Before this current streak started, the Liberty baseball program had never won 30 or
more games for four consecutive years. Previously, the Flames had posted 30 or more
victories for three consecutive seasons from 2000-02.

Burning Up the Base Paths
The Flames enter the week with 106 stolen bases, the most by a Liberty team since
2002, when the Flames stole 111 bases in 59 games. Liberty’s 106 stolen bases leads
the Big South Conference in the category. The Flames were ranked sixth in the nation
in the latest NCAA Division I statistical report, for games played through May 1.
Liberty has taken advantage of its team speed, nearly doubling its stolen base total
from a year ago. The Flames have stolen 106 bases in 135 attempts this season, compared to 2010, when the Flames swiped 57 stolen bases in 80 attempts during the entire
year.
Leading the way for the Flames is center fielder Ian Parmley with 25 stolen bases.
The Liberty outfielder is second in the Big South and 29th nationally in the category. Parmley’s 25 steals are the most by a Liberty player since 2004, when outfielder Jeremiah
Boles had 31 stolen bases. In addition, Parmley has moved into a tie for ninth on the
program’s single season list with former Liberty shortstop Joey Monahan, who had 25 in
2002. Gary Wagner holds the school record with 46 stolen bases in 1983.
The Flames’ stolen base totals are definitely a stark contrast from last season. Not
only has Liberty surpassed last year’s season total, but individually four Flames have
more steals than outfielder Curran Redal, who led the 2010 team with a season total of
13 stolen bases. Joining Parmley is catcher Casey Rasmus, who has 18 stolen bases
this season despite playing in 39 games. Rasmus is sixth in the conference in the category. Outfielder Michael Robertson and shortstop Matt Williams have also reached
double-digit totals. Robertson is eighth in the conference with 15 stolen bases, while
Williams has 14 steals.
Picking Up the Pace
With new bats and new rules to speed up time between innings and govern mound
visits, the time Flames contests have been played in this season has seen a significant
drop. So far this season, Liberty games have run an average of 2:30, compared to 2:49
at this point in 2010, an 19-minute difference.
Last season through 51 games, Liberty had already played 17 games which lasted
three hours or longer, with the longest being 3:43 in a 14-13, 10 inning setback to Manhattan on March 20. This season, the Flames have had only six games go over three
hours, the longest being 3:26 in a wild, come-from-behind, 14-9 victory at High Point,
April 10. Liberty scored seven times in the ninth inning to erase a 9-7 deficit, en route to
the win.
Baker Has Been Big
In his first season in a Liberty uniform, pitcher Garrett Baker has established himself
as the workhorse of the Flames’ relief corps.
The junior left-hander has made a team-leading 21 appearances, posting a 6-4 record with two saves and a 3.08 ERA in 47 1/3 innings. Of his 21 appearances, three have
been starts.
In addition, Baker has struck out 39 and walked only four batters. He leads the conference with 0.68 walks allowed per nine innings and was ninth nationally in last week’s
NCAA Division I statistical report.
Over the last four conference weekends, Baker has been the first pitcher summoned
from the Liberty bullpen in seven of the 12 games, recording a 3-1 record and two saves
with a 0.51 ERA in 17 2/3 innings. He has struck out 15 batters and walked one, holding
opponents to a .161 batting average over the stretch. For the year, Baker has allowed
only six of 26 inherited runners to score.
Williams Moves Up on Career 2Bs List
Shortstop Matt Williams continues to climb the school’s Top 10 career doubles list.
With 15 doubles on the year, Williams now has 49 two-base hits in his career, tying former Liberty standout Jason Benham (1995-98) for sixth place on the all-time list.
Former Liberty outfielder Phillip Laurent (2003-06) holds the school career record for
two-base hits with 68. He also set the single-season record with 27 in 2006.
Williams’ Liberty teammate Tyler Bream has also moved into the Top 10 career doubles list this season. With 45 two-base hits, the Flames third baseman ranks 10th on the
school’s career list.

Two-HR Games Abound Over 10-Day Stretch
Three Flames hit two home runs in a game over a stretch of 10 days from April 17-26.
Before the stretch, no Liberty player had connected for more than one round tripper in a
game this season.
Designated hitter Justin Richardson became the first Flame to hit two home runs in a
game this season in a 7-1 win over Presbyterian College during the first game of a doubleheader, April 17 at Worthington Stadium. The blasts were his first and second round
trippers of the year. Richardson belted solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings of
the contest.
Catcher Jeff Jefferson followed six days later in an 8-6 victory over VMI in game one
of a doubleheader at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington, Va., April 23. Jefferson lined a
solo home run in the fifth and tied the game at 6-6 in the ninth inning with another solo
home run. In the come-from-behind victory at VMI, the Flames hit five home runs, their
most in a contest this season.
Outfielder Ryan Cordell became the third player with a multi-home run game April 26
at No. 2 South Carolina. The first two hits of his collegiate career, the outfielder hit round
trippers in the fourth and eight innings.
Last season, Liberty only had one multiple-home run game. Third baseman Tyler
Bream hit two round trippers, including a two-run, walk-off home run in the last game of
the season at Worthington Stadium, a 7-6 victory over VCU on May 18, 2010.
Casey Rasmus - Base Cop
Flames catcher Casey Rasmus has been tough on base stealers this season. The
junior begins the weekend having thrown out 43% (17-of-40) of would-be base stealers in
39 games.
He is third in the Big South in runners caught stealing despite having his playing time
curtailed due to injury.
Flames Sweep Doubleheader and Series
Liberty took both games of a doubleheader, 3-0 and 15-3, May 7 to complete a sweep
of a Big South three-game series with UNC Asheville at Worthington Stadium.
In game one, Steven Evans pitched the first complete-game shutout of his career.
The left-hander scattered four hits and struck out eight batters in the contest. Center
fielder Ian Parmley went 3-for-3 with two doubles, driving in a run and scoring a run.
In game two, right fielder Michael Robertson went 5-for-5 with three doubles and first
baseman Austin Taylor had three hits, including a home run, as the Liberty Flames defeated the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, 15-3.
Robertson had five hits in a contest for the first time in his career at Liberty. The right
fielder scored three times and also drove in two runs.
Taylor plated three runs with his three hits and also scored three times in the game.
His two-out solo home run in the fourth inning tied him with shortstop Matt Williams for the
team lead with six round trippers.
Keegan Linza picked up his eighth win on the year, allowing one run on two hits over
six innings.
Williams Hits Second Walk-off HR in Seven Days
A two-run home run by Liberty shortstop Matt Williams capped a three-run, ninth
inning rally, propelling the Flames past the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, 3-2, May 5 in a Big
South contest at Worthington Stadium.
The Williams round tripper was his second walk-off home run in seven days. On April
29 at Worthington Stadium, the shortstop ripped the first pitch he saw leading off the 12th
inning into the left field bullpen for a 3-2 win over the Le Moyne Dolphins.
Trailing 2-0 and held to three hits, Liberty reversed its fortunes in the ninth inning.
Center fielder Ian Parmley, who was 3-for-3 in the game, led off the inning by beating out
a grounder deep in the hole between shortstop and third base for a hit. After Parmley advanced to third base on an errant throw by Dull on a pickoff attempt, right fielder Michael
Robertson laced a liner into the left field corner for a double, plating Parmley. Williams
followed by ripping his sixth home run of the season over the left center field wall for the
victory.

Beakler’s Effort Highlights Wins Against UNO
Liberty took two games from the New Orleans Privateers at Worthington Stadium
during the Liberty Tournament, April 30-May 1. The Flames won April 30, 3-2, and May
1, 5-2.
Right-hander Dane Beakler’s effort was the key to Liberty’s win on April 30. Making
his first start since May 16, 2006, Beakler recorded the first complete game of his career.
The senior right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits over the full nine
innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. After New Orleans tied the game
in the fifth inning, the right-hander did not allow a runner to reach base, retiring the last
14 batters to face him in the contest.
First baseman Austin Taylor hit his fifth home run of the year to break a 2-2 tie in the
seventh inning in the 3-2 win.
On May 1, left fielder Ryan Cordell and third baseman Zack Haley each had three
hits, leading the Liberty Flames to a 5-2 victory. Cordell had three hits in a game for the
first time as a collegian. The left fielder went 3-for-3 in the contest, scoring twice. Haley
matched his teammate by going 3-for-3 and plating two runs.

Williams and Linza Push Flames Past Le Moyne
Shortstop Matt Williams hit a home run leading off the 12th inning to propel the Liberty Flames past the Le Moyne Dolphins, 3-2, April 29 in the second game of the Liberty
Tournament at Worthington Stadium.
With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 12th inning, Williams belted the first offering from Dolphin pitcher Ed Kohout over the left field wall for the 3-2 victory. The home
run was the shortstop’s team-leading fifth of the year.
Liberty starter Steven Evans did not figure in the decision. However, he moved into
second place in the school’s strikeout list with eight strikeouts in the game. The lefthander has 244 career strikeouts. Mike Brown holds the Liberty career mark with 287
strikeouts from 1994-97.
Mark Swanson recorded the win to move to 2-1 on the year. The senior right-hander
pitched four scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits. He struck out two and did not
walk a batter.
Two days later, right-hander Keegan Linza capped a 4-0 weekend with a complete

Linza recorded his fourth complete game of the season, running his mark to 7-3 on
the year in the victory. The senior right-hander gave up an unearned run on six hits. He
struck out seven and walked two batters. Linza allowed only one hit during the last five
innings.
Liberty totaled eight hits in the game. Designated hitter Justin Richardson led the
Flames with two hits.
Flames Take Two From VMI
The Liberty Flames rallied with three runs in the ninth inning and catcher Jeff Jefferson hit two home runs, downing the VMI Keydets, 8-6, in the first game of a doubleheader, April 23 at Gray-Minor Stadium. The win enabled the Flames to take the first two
games of a three-game Big South series with the Keydets.
Liberty hit five home runs in the contest, the most by the Flames this season. Liberty
had previously hit three round trippers in a game in a 7-1 win over Presbyterian College
in the first game of a doubleheader on April 17.
Trailing 6-5, the Flames plated three runs in the top of the ninth to take an 8-6 lead.
With one out, catcher Jeff Jefferson belted his second home run of the game and fourth
of the year to left field, tying the contest at 6-6. Second baseman Zack Haley followed
with a home run inside the left field foul pole, putting Liberty on top for the second time in

behind the mound for an infield single, to score a run for a 3-2 edge.
Baker held VMI in check in both the eighth and ninth innings to close out the Liberty
victory.

Complete Games Highlight Sweep
Each of Liberty’s starting pitchers of its three-game Big South series pitched
a complete game, keying a sweep of the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in the
first conference series of the year, March 18-20.
After allowing a combined four runs the previous week at the Keith LeClair
Classic, Liberty starters, Keegan Linza, John Niggli and Steven Evans once again
turned the trick, holding the Buccaneers to four runs over the entire three-game
series.
Linza got things started, March 18 in the series opener. The senior righthander outdueled his Charleston Southern counterpart, going the distance in his
second consecutive outing in a 2-1 win.
Linza allowed one run on eight hits, striking out a career-high 10 to run his record
to 4-0 on the year.
Niggli followed-up with a gem of his own on March 19. The junior right-hander
threw his first complete game in a Liberty uniform in a 5-1 victory. Niggli gave up
one run on five hits, striking out four. From the third inning on, the junior dominated, not allowing a Charleston Southern hit until a two-out infield single in the
ninth inning. During the stretch, the Liberty right-hander allowed only two runners
to reach, on a walk in the fifth and another walk in the sixth inning.
The next afternoon, Evans made it three consecutive complete games, pitching his first of the season and the fifth of his career in a 5-2 victory over the Buccaneers. He allowed two runs on six hits, fanning 12 to set a new career-high and
walked one.
Baker Comes Up Big at Maryland
A strong relief appearance by Garrett Baker and seven extra base hits propelled the Liberty Flames past the Maryland Terrapins, 11-4, March 15 at Smith
Stadium in College Park, Md.
Baker entered the contest with the bases loaded, no one out and one run
already in for Maryland in the first inning and quickly restored order in the contest.
The junior allowed only an unearned run, scattering three hits over eight effective innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked none, running his record
to 2-0. He retired seven consecutive batters from the second through the fourth
inning and later, finished his outing by setting down 12 Terrapins in order.
Despite trailing 3-0 after one inning, the Flames answered with four runs in
the third inning to take a lead they never relinquished. In the frame, second baseman Zack Haley and first baseman Jeff Jefferson hit solo home runs. For Haley,
it was his first of the season, while Jefferson’s round tripper was his second on
the year.
Haley led all players in the contest with three hits, including two extra base
hits. One of left fielder Doug Bream’s two hits in the game was a bases-clearing
double.
Pitchers Lead the Way at LeClair Classic
Liberty captured the 2011 Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, N.C., March
11-13 with a 3-0 record. Keying the title run were the efforts of Flames starting
pitchers Keegan Linza, John Niggli and Steven Evans.
Linza got things started on March 11, firing the first complete game of the
season by a Liberty starting pitcher in a 5-2 victory over Rutgers. The senior
right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out five and not walking a
Scarlet Knight batter.
Linza retired the first 10 Scarlet Knight batters to face him in the contest and did not
allow a runner past second base until the seventh inning, when Rutgers scored its first run
of the contest. With the win, he runs his record to 3-0 on the year.
The following day, right-hander John Niggli pitched seven strong innings to pick up his
second victory of the year in a 4-3 win over Monmouth. The junior gave up two runs on six
hits, striking out one and walking none over the first seven innings, before being relieved
by Garrett Baker. He followed with 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing a run on one hit. J.J.
McLeod faced one batter, getting the final out of the contest to earn his first save of the year.
Left-hander Steven Evans capped the weekend by handcuffing the host East Carolina
Pirates in a 2-0 victory, March 13. The senior left-hander held the Pirate hitters in check
during his outing, scattering four hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first victory
of 2011. The left-hander struck out a season-high nine batters and walked three, running
his record to 1-3 on the season. He retired the last eight batters he faced, before giving way

Connections - Part I
Three Liberty Flames, catcher Casey Rasmus, third baseman Tyler Bream and infielder
Austin Taylor, each have connections to Major League Baseball through family members.
Rasmus, a junior, is in his first season as a member of the Liberty roster. His brother
Colby is a member of the St. Louis Cardinals and enters his third season as an outfielder
with the team in 2011.
Bream, also a junior, is the son of former major leaguer Sid Bream. Sid Bream, a Liberty standout during his collegiate days, played 12 seasons in the majors (1983-94) with the
Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros.
Taylor, a senior, is the nephew of former major leaguer Bill Taylor. Bill Taylor spent
parts of eight seasons with the Oakland A’s, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays.
Connections - Part II
Three Flames are carrying on a family tradition, as a member of their family formerly
played baseball at Liberty.
First baseman/outfielder Doug Bream’s uncle Dave was a member of the Liberty baseball program from 1982-85.
Third baseman Tyler Bream’s father, Sid, and two uncles, Dave and Sheldon, were
members of the Flames. Sid, who went on to play in the major leagues, was a standout for
Liberty on the diamond from 1979-81. The first baseman and Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame
member was named a NAIA and NABC All-American in 1981, as the Flames reached the
NAIA National Tournament.
Bream’s uncles, Dave and Sheldon, were also members of the Flames baseball team
during their college days. Dave played infield for Liberty from 1982-85, while Sheldon was
an outfielder with the Flames from 1989-93. Tyler and Doug are second cousins.
Meanwhile, pitcher Garrett Baker begins his first season at Liberty. The junior lefthander’s brothers, Jason and Steve, played for the Flames. Jason patrolled the outfield
for the Flames from 1993-95, earning first team All-Big South honors in 1995. Steve was
also an outfielder at Liberty from 1999-02. He was named to the Big South all-conference
second team in 2002.
