Head Coach Jim Toman
Record at Liberty:139-84-1 (.623) (Fourth Year)
Career Record: Same
After leading his team to a school-record 42 victories in 2010, Jim Toman enters his fourth year
at Liberty with the best mark of any Flames head coach over his first three years.
Since taking over the program for the 2008 season, Liberty has won 35 or more games twice
and last season posted only the second 40-win campaign in the 37-year history of the program. The
Flames notched a 110-66-1 record during his first three seasons on Liberty Mountain.
On May 2, 2010, Toman recorded his 100th career victory, as the Flames defeated GardnerWebb, 10-7, at Worthington Stadium. The sixth coach in program history, Toman became the fastest Liberty baseball head coach to amass the milestone, passing first coach Al Worthington, by
reaching his 100th win in 160 games, six fewer than Worthington.
The impressive strides made by the program have not gone unnoticed. This past November,
Rivals.com cited Liberty as one being one of college baseball’s top 10 rising programs.
Last season, the Flames had their best season under Toman, posting a school record for wins
in a single season with a 42-19 record. The team’s ledger was boosted by a 21-8 road mark, the
nation’s 10th-best road record in 2010.
In addition, Liberty recorded a 19-7 mark in Big South play, eclipsing its record of the previous
season for most victories by the school since joining the conference in 1992. The Flames finished
second in the league’s regular season and were conference runner-up at the Big South Baseball
Championship.
Pitcher Shawn Teufel became the fourth player from one of Toman’s Liberty squads to be taken
in the MLB Draft. The two-time Big South all-conference first team pitcher and National Pitcher of
the Year Watch list member capped a strong senior campaign by being selected by the Detroit
Tigers.
In 2009, Liberty recorded a 33-21 overall record, while posting a 17-9 mark in Big South Conference play. Liberty set a new fielding standard in 2009, committing the fewest errors, 53, and
finishing the year with the highest fielding percentage, .974, in team history. From that infield, third
baseman Tyler Bream was named a Freshman All-American by the Collegiate Baseball News.
Pitcher Andrew Wilson became the third player during Toman’s time at Liberty to be taken in
the MLB draft (Atlanta Braves).
In 2008, the Flames fashioned a 13-3-1 record in the month of May to finish Toman’s first season at Liberty with a 35-26-1 mark. The record made Toman the winningest first-year coach in the
program’s history. He guided the Flames to their third straight Big South Championship title game
appearance, claiming the conference’s runner-up position in 2008. Liberty’s May record was the
best ever by a Flames team.
In addition, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing batters during the year. The Flames’ strikeout total led the Big South Conference and their 8.2
strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season’s end. Two pitchers from the staff,
Ryan Page and David Stokes, went on to be drafted and play in the professional ranks. Page was
taken in the 20th round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, while Stokes was picked in the
28th round by the Detroit Tigers.
Liberty finished its season with a 14-7 record in conference play. The mark allowed the Flames
to claim the No. 2 seed for the Big South Championship, their highest seed for the Big South Baseball Championship since a No. 1 seed in 2000. Liberty would go on to post four consecutive doubledigit victories during six games in the Big South Championship to set a championship record with
55 runs scored.
Toman was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Liberty Baseball program in June
2007, after 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South Carolina.
Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990 season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and coached the
catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 22-year college coaching
veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant
Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman served under Tanner for
seven years at N.C. State.
Toman has recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. During his final years with the Gamecocks, he recruited many of the players who were members of the
2010 South Carolina National Championship team. From 2003-2006, three of the four Gamecock
recruiting classes were ranked first in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.
During his time on the staff in Columbia, S.C., Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA
Regional appearances, including eight straight between 2000 and 2007, and three consecutive
trips to the College World Series (2002-04). Add in his seven seasons at N.C. State, and Toman
has helped lead 14 teams to NCAA Regional appearances.
Toman was a four-year letterwinner at N.C. State from 1981-84, and served as team captain of
the Wolfpack his junior and senior seasons.

The Coaches
Liberty Head Coach Jim Toman is in his fourth year at the helm of the Flames. During
his time at Liberty, he has guided the Flames to a 139-84-1 record. He led the Flames to
the best mark of any Liberty head coach over his first three seasons on Liberty Mountain.
Last season, the Flames had their best year under Toman, posting a school record
for wins in a single season with a 42-19 record. The team’s ledger was boosted by a 21-8
road mark, the nation’s 10th best road record in 2010.
In addition, Liberty recorded a 19-7 mark in Big South play, eclipsing its record of the
previous season for most victories by the school since joining the conference in 1992. The
Flames finished second in the league’s regular season and were conference runner-up at
the Big South Baseball Championship.
Gardner-Webb Head Coach Rusty Stroupe is in his ninth year guiding the Bulldogs.
Last season, Troupe led Gardner-Webb to a 25-30 overall record and a 10-17 finish in the
Big South standings. In 2009, the Bulldogs set school records for batting average (.327)
and home runs (65), while posting a 29-29 record during their first year in the Big South
Conference.
The 21-year coaching veteran has posted a 606-417-1 record during his career, while
posting a 250-244-1 mark at Gardner-Webb. He has made previous coaching stops at Division II Lander and Brevard. In 1977, Troupe started the program at Lander and later, led the
Senators to a top 25 ranking. In 1994, he led Brevard to the Junior College World Series,
and was named North Carolina Baseball Coach of the Year.
All-Time Series Against Gardner-Webb
Friday’s meeting between the Bulldogs and the Flames will be the ninth meeting alltime between the two teams. Liberty leads the all-time series, 5-3. The Flames also hold
a 5-1 edge in the series since Gardner-Webb joined the Big South Conference in 2009.
Last season, Liberty swept a three-game Big South series from the Bulldogs at
Worthington Stadium, April 30-May 2. In the final game of the series on May 2, Liberty’s
10-7 win was the 100th victory of Flames head coach Jim Toman’s career.
In 2009, Liberty and Gardner-Webb met for the first time since 1984, with Liberty
wining two of the three games in the conference series the last time the two teams met
in Boiling Springs, N.C., April 24-26. After dropping the first contest, 9-8, the Flames defeated Gardner-Webb, 10-2 and 10-9 in 11 innings, to take the series.
Longest Win Streak of Season
The Flames enter Friday’s contest at Gardner-Webb with a seven-game winning
streak, their longest such streak of the season. With wins on Friday and Saturday, Liberty
would tie the school record for consecutive wins at the NCAA Division I level with nine.
The mark has been reached six times, including each of the last three seasons (2008-10).
The 1976 Liberty squad, under the guidance of head coach Al Worthington, holds the
program record of 15 straight wins.

30 Wins on the Horizon
With 29 wins, Liberty is one game shy of recording 30 wins in a season for the seventh consecutive season, and each of its four years under head coach Jim Toman. It
would be the first time in the 38-year history of the program, the Flames have won 30 or
more games seven-straight years.
Last season, the Flames posted a school-record 42-19 mark to record its sixth-straight
season of 30 wins or more. It was the first time Liberty had accomplished the six-year
feat. The 42 victories eclipsed the previous school standard of 40 set by the 1983 Liberty
team. It was the second time in the program’s history a team posted 40 or more wins in a
year.
Before this current streak started, the Liberty baseball program had never won 30 or
more games for four consecutive years. Previously, the Flames had posted 30 or more
victories for three consecutive seasons from 2000-02.

A Look at Gardner-Webb
After sweeping Radford in a Big South three-game series, April 29-May 1, the Runnin’
Bulldogs have seen their fortunes change, dropping four consecutive games to nationally ranked opponents, North Carolina and Clemson. Yet despite the four-game losing
skid, Gardner-Webb has already eclipsed last year’s overall record of 25-30, entering the
weekend with 28 wins. In addition, the Bulldogs are among several teams in the mix for
one of the top four places in the Big South standings and begin the week tied for third
place with a 12-9 mark.
Gardner-Webb enters the week with a conference-leading .310 team batting average.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs are averaging 7.3 runs per game, which also leads the Big South.
First baseman Dusty Quattlebaum leads Gardner-Webb with a .345 batting average.
The junior is one of five Bulldogs hitting .318 or better. He leads the Big South with 23
doubles.
Second baseman Daniel Merck and shortstop Aaron Miller are each among the conference leaders in runs scored. Merck enters the weekend third in the Big South with 46
runs scored, while Miller is fourth with 45.
Meanwhile, the Gardner-Webb pitching staff has posted a 5.68 ERA and has had
opponents hit .294 against it. The Bulldogs have allowed 6.41 runs per game so far this
season.
Right-hander Connor Scarborough and left-hander Erik Heiligenstadt have been the
main weekend starters for Gardner-Webb this season. Scarborough is tied for fifth in the
conference with six wins, entering the weekend with a 6-2 record and a 7.24 ERA over 51
innings. Heiligenstadt has posted a 3-4 record with a 5.96 ERA over 54 1/3 innings. His
12 starts are the most for any Bulldog.
Brett Stackhouse and Jeff Howell have been the most called upon pitchers out of the
Gardner-Webb bullpen this season. Stackhouse leads the Big South with 26 appearances. The left-hander has a 1-2 record with one save and a 4.05 ERA in 26 2/3 innings.
Howell is tied for third in the conference with 24 appearances. The right-hander is 3-1 with
six saves and a 2.76 ERA over 32 2/3 innings. He is tied with teammate Adam Izokovic for
third in the Big South in saves.
Izokovic has made 21 appearances this season. Besides six saves, he is 3-1 with a
5.85 ERA in 32 1/3 innings.
Toman Posts Milestone 100th Coaching Win Against Bulldogs

a coaching milestone by recording his 100th career coaching win.
On May 2, 2010 at Worthington Stadium, the Flames defeated the Bulldogs, 10-7, in
the final game of their three-game series for Toman’s 100th career coaching win.
Of the six head coaches in Liberty history, Toman became the fastest to reach 100
coaching victories with the victory. Toman reached the milestone in 160 games, eclipsing
program founder and first head coach Al Worthington, who reached his 100th win in 166
games.

15-6 in conference play this season and currently are in second place in the league’s

Burning Up the Base Paths
The Flames enter the weekend with 99 stolen bases, the most by a Liberty team
since 2006, when the Flames stole 104 bases in 60 games. Liberty’s 99 stolen bases
leads the Big South Conference in the category. The Flames were ranked sixth in the
nation in the latest NCAA Division I statistical report, for games played through May 1.
Liberty has taken advantage of its team speed, nearly doubling its stolen base total
from a year ago. The Flames have stolen 99 bases in 124 attempts this season, compared to 2010, when the Flames swiped 57 stolen bases in 80 attempts during the entire
year.
Leading the way for the Flames is center fielder Ian Parmley with 23 stolen bases.
The Liberty outfielder is third in the Big South and 29th nationally in the category. Parmley’s 23 steals are the most by a Liberty player since 2006, when third baseman Chad
Miller had 24. In addition, with one more stolen base, the junior will tie Miller and Tony
Beasley (1989) for 10th on the program’s single season list. Gary Wagner holds the
school record with 46 stolen bases in 1983.
The Flames’ stolen base totals are definitely a stark contrast from last season. Not
only has Liberty surpassed last year’s season total, but individually four Flames have
more steals than outfielder Curran Redal, who led the 2010 team with a season total of
13 stolen bases. Joining Parmley is catcher Casey Rasmus, who is 17-for-18 in steal
attempts this season despite playing in 36 games. Rasmus is tied for fourth in the conference in the category. Shortstop Matt Williams and outfielder Michael Robertson have
also reached double-digit thefts, each having swiped 14 bases.
What’s the RISP?
The Flames are hitting .301 with runners in scoring position, so far this season. Outfielder Doug Bream leads the team with a .446 batting average with runners in scoring
position. Fellow outfielder Michael Robertson is next with a .418 average.
Meanwhile, second baseman Zack Haley paces the Flames in hitting with runners in
scoring position and two outs. Haley is hitting .400 in that situation.

Picking Up the Pace
With new bats and new rules to speed up time between innings and govern mound
visits, the time Flames contests have been played in this season has seen a significant
drop. So far this season, Liberty games have run an average of 2:29, compared to 2:49
at this point in 2010, an 20-minute difference.
Last season through 48 games, Liberty had already played 15 games which lasted
three hours or longer, with the longest being 3:43 in a 14-13, 10 inning setback to Manhattan on March 20. This season, the Flames have had only five games go over three hours,
the longest being 3:26 in a wild, come-from-behind, 14-9 victory at High Point, April 10.
Liberty scored seven times in the ninth inning to erase a 9-7 deficit, en route to the win.
Weekend Trio Getting It Done
Entering this weekend, Liberty pitchers John Niggli, Steven Evans and Keegan Linza
have established themselves as a trio to reckon with. The three weekend starters for the
Flames have combined to post a 17-6 record with a 2.75 ERA over 229 2/3 innings in
33 starts, so far this season. They have also combined for seven complete games, with
Linza going the full nine innings four times this year.
Linza is among the Big South leaders in several categories. The senior right-hander
leads the conference with eight wins and 85 2/3 innings pitched. He is fourth in the league
with a 2.31 ERA.
Evans and Niggli also have their names on several of the Big South lists. Niggli
is sixth in opponent batting average (.235) and eighth in ERA (2.97). Evans is third in
strikeouts (67) and third in innings pitched (79 1/3). He also ranks fifth in the Big South in
opponent batting average (.229).
Baker Has Been Big
In his first season in a Liberty uniform, pitcher Garrett Baker has established himself
as the workhorse of the Flames’ relief corps.
The junior left-hander has made a team-leading 19 appearances, posting a 6-3 record with two saves and a 3.42 ERA in 47 1/3 innings. Of his 19 appearances, three have
been starts. He is currently tied for fifth in the Big South Conference in wins.
In addition, Baker has struck out 32 and walked only four batters. He leads the conference with 0.76 walks allowed per nine innings and is ninth nationally.
Over the last three conference weekends, Baker has been the first pitcher summoned
from the Liberty bullpen in five of the games, recording three wins and two saves with a
0.73 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. He has struck out eight batters and held opponents to a .125
batting average during the stretch. Entering each game with runners on base, the lefthander only allowed the opposition to score once. During the span, three of 10 inherited
runners have scored.
For the year, Baker has allowed only five of 20 inherited runners to score.
Evans Continues to Climb Up Career Lists
Liberty senior Steven Evans pitched the first complete-game shutout of his career in
a 3-0 victory over UNC Asheville in the first game of a doubleheader, this past Saturday.
The win was the 24th of his career, tying him for second on Liberty’s all-time victory list
with Tim Harrell (1995-98) and David Harris (1979-83). Former Flames standout Lee
Guetterman (1978-81) is the program’s career leader with 29 career wins.
In addition, with nine innings of work, Evans moved into fourth all-time at Liberty with
301 1/3 innings pitched. The left-hander passes Tim Harrell on the program’s innings
pitched list. Harrell pitched 300 innings for the Flames from 1995-98. Guetterman also
heads up that list with 334 2/3 innings pitched during his time at Liberty.
Earlier this season, Evans moved into second on the program’s all-time strikeout
ledger. Currently, the left-hander has 252 career strikeouts. Only Mike Brown (1994-97),
Liberty’s career strikeout leader with 287, has compiled more. Evans is currently third in
the Big South with 67 strikeouts this season.
A fixture of the Flames’ pitching staff over the past four years, Evans has a 24-10 record, four saves and a 3.49 ERA during his career. The left-hander has walked 95 batters
for a 2.65 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio during his career.

Former Liberty outfielder Phillip Laurent (2003-06) holds the school career record for
two-base hits with 68. He also set the single-season record with 27 in 2006.

Two-HR Games Abound Over 10-Day Stretch
Three Flames hit two home runs in a game over a stretch of 10 days from April 1726. Before the stretch, no Liberty player had connected for more than one round tripper
in a game this season.
Designated hitter Justin Richardson became the first Flame to hit two home runs
in a game this season in a 7-1 win over Presbyterian College during the first game of
a doubleheader, April 17 at Worthington Stadium. The blasts were his first and second
round trippers of the year. Richardson belted solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings of the contest.
Catcher Jeff Jefferson followed six days later in an 8-6 victory over VMI in game one
of a doubleheader at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington, Va., April 23. Jefferson lined a
solo home run in the fifth and tied the game at 6-6 in the ninth inning with another solo
home run. In the come-from-behind victory at VMI, the Flames hit five home runs, their
most in a contest this season.
Outfielder Ryan Cordell became the third player with a multi-home run game April 26
at No. 2 South Carolina. The first two hits of his collegiate career, the outfielder hit round
trippers in the fourth and eight innings.
Last season, Liberty only had one multiple-home run game. Third baseman Tyler
Bream hit two round trippers, including a two-run, walk-off home run in the last game of
the season at Worthington Stadium, a 7-6 victory over VCU on May 18, 2010.

Doing the Dougie
On April 6, outfielder Doug Bream had a career-high five hits in a 16-12 setback at
Worthington Stadium. Bream surpassed his previous career-high of four hits in a 12-7
win over James Madison at Worthington Stadium on April 21, 2010. It is the first time a
Liberty Flame has had five hits in game since outfielder Curran Redal in a 14-8 victory
over High Point in game one of a Big South Conference doubleheader at Worthington
Stadium on April 3, 2010. Bream went 5-for-5 in the contest and scored three runs.
Later in the week, the senior had two four-hit games in victories at High Point to
close the week with a .737 batting average.
The left fielder enters Friday’s contest with a .364 batting average to lead the Flames.
He ranks eighth in the Big South Conference in the category. Bream also leads Liberty
with 37 RBIs.
Bream has a team-leading 20 multi-hit games this season. He also leads the team
with 11 multi-RBI games. The outfielder had a season-long 12 game hit streak stopped
in the second game of a doubleheader at VMI on April 23. The streak is tied for the longest by a Flame this season with catcher Casey Rasmus.
It is What I Like About Sunday
The Flames have found games on Sunday to their liking this season, posting a 9-1
record in games played on the day. In its lone Sunday loss, Liberty was defeated 5-4 by
Coastal Carolina on April 3.
In Sunday games, the Flames have outscored their opponents, 61-27, and have a
.302 batting average compared to a .220 for their opponents.

A two-run home run by Liberty shortstop Matt Williams capped a three-run, ninth
inning rally, propelling the Flames past the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, 3-2, May 5 in a Big

Back-to-Back Home Runs - Mercer catcher Travis Benn and left fielder Derrick Workman led off the third inning with back-toback home runs during the second game of a doubleheader, Feb., 19, 2011 at Claude Smith Field in Macon, Ga. The Bears
went on to take the contest from the Flames, 17-5.
Five or More RBIs in a Game - Coastal Carolina right fielder Daniel Bowman drove in six runs in a 17-1 Chanticleer victory over
Liberty, April 1 at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C. Bowman had two hits, a three-run home run and a two-run single.
He also brought in a run with a squeeze bunt in the contest.
Grand Slam Home Run - With two away in the eighth inning, VMI second baseman Jacob Morely lined his first home run of the
year, a grand slam, over the center field fence to give the Keydets a 6-5 lead in game one of a doubleheader April 23 at GrayMnor Stadium in Lexington, Va. Liberty rallied with three runs in the ninth inning for an 8-6 win.
No-Hitter - UNC Asheville’s Jason Walker pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against the Flames on April 29, 2000, at Greenwood
Field in Asheville, N.C. Walker allowed two walks and struck out four, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-0 win. The game marked the
only shutout against the Flames on the season and the first no-hitter thrown against Liberty since 1992.
Shutout - North Florida pitchers Casey Medlen and Tyler Moore combined to hold Liberty to three hits, to shut out the Flames,
5-0, Feb. 25 in the opening game of a four-game series between the two teams at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
Medlen, the starter, allowed two hits, striking out seven and walking one in the win.
Triple Play - Leading 6-4 with a runner on first and second to open the fourth inning, Patrick Gaillard hit a line drive which High
Point second baseman Dustin Hoffman caught. Hoffman then tagged second and threw quickly to first to complete the triple
play. The Flames went on to win the Big South Championship game, 9-7, on May 25, 2006 at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C.
