The Games
The Liberty Flames (17-16, 7-5 Big South) host the Presbyterian College Blue Hose
(18-16, 4-8) in a three-game Big South series at Worthington Stadium, Friday-Sunday.
The series will open on Friday under the lights. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, first pitch is slated for 3 p.m., while the final game of the series is scheduled for 1
p.m., Sunday.
Last Time Out
Down by two runs, the Liberty Flames erupted for seven runs in the ninth inning for a
14-9 victory over the High Point Panthers, Sunday afternoon, in a Big South Conference
contest at Coy O. Willard Stadium. With the win, the Flames took the weekend series.
Trailing 9-7, Liberty pounced on High Point relief pitching, batting around in the top of
the ninth inning to take the lead. The Flames scored seven runs on seven hits and an error
to erase the host team’s edge.
Liberty had 19 hits in the game. For the second consecutive day, outfielder Doug
Bream had four hits to lead all players in the contest. The Liberty left fielder hit .643 during the three-game series against the Panthers. Center fielder Ian Parmley, right fielder
Michael Robertson and shortstop Matt Williams each had three hits apiece for the Flames.
Reliever Mark Swanson evened his record at 1-1 on the year. After entering the contest with runners on second and third base and no one out in the sixth, the senior righthander kept the Flames close, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
On Deck
Tuesday, the Flames will travel across the state and visit the College of William &
Mary. Game time at Plumeri Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.

After leading his team to a school-record 42 victories in 2010, Jim Toman enters his fourth year
at Liberty with the best mark of any Flames head coach over his first three years.
Since taking over the program for the 2008 season, Liberty has won 35 or more games twice
and last season posted only the second 40-win campaign in the 37-year history of the program. The
Flames notched a 110-66-1 record during his first three seasons on Liberty Mountain.
On May 2, 2010, Toman recorded his 100th career victory, as the Flames defeated GardnerWebb, 10-7, at Worthington Stadium. The sixth coach in program history, Toman became the fastest Liberty baseball head coach to amass the milestone, passing first coach Al Worthington, by
reaching his 100th win in 160 games, six fewer than Worthington.
The impressive strides made by the program have not gone unnoticed. This past November,
Rivals.com cited Liberty as one being one of college baseball’s top 10 rising programs.
Last season, the Flames had their best season under Toman, posting a school record for wins
in a single season with a 42-19 record. The team’s ledger was boosted by a 21-8 road mark, the
nation’s 10th-best road record in 2010.
In addition, Liberty recorded a 19-7 mark in Big South play, eclipsing its record of the previous
season for most victories by the school since joining the conference in 1992. The Flames finished
second in the league’s regular season and were conference runner-up at the Big South Baseball
Championship.
Pitcher Shawn Teufel became the fourth player from one of Toman’s Liberty squads to be taken
in the MLB Draft. The two-time Big South all-conference first team pitcher and National Pitcher of
the Year Watch list member capped a strong senior campaign by being selected by the Detroit
Tigers.
In 2009, Liberty recorded a 33-21 overall record, while posting a 17-9 mark in Big South Conference play. Liberty set a new fielding standard in 2009, committing the fewest errors, 53, and
finishing the year with the highest fielding percentage, .974, in team history. From that infield, third
baseman Tyler Bream was named a Freshman All-American by the Collegiate Baseball News.
Pitcher Andrew Wilson became the third player during Toman’s time at Liberty to be taken in
the MLB draft (Atlanta Braves).
In 2008, the Flames fashioned a 13-3-1 record in the month of May to finish Toman’s first season at Liberty with a 35-26-1 mark. The record made Toman the winningest first-year coach in the
program’s history. He guided the Flames to their third straight Big South Championship title game
appearance, claiming the conference’s runner-up position in 2008. Liberty’s May record was the
best ever by a Flames team.
In addition, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing batters during the year. The Flames’ strikeout total led the Big South Conference and their 8.2
strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season’s end. Two pitchers from the staff,
Ryan Page and David Stokes, went on to be drafted and play in the professional ranks. Page was
taken in the 20th round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, while Stokes was picked in the
28th round by the Detroit Tigers.
Liberty finished its season with a 14-7 record in conference play. The mark allowed the Flames
to claim the No. 2 seed for the Big South Championship, their highest seed for the Big South Baseball Championship since a No. 1 seed in 2000. Liberty would go on to post four consecutive doubledigit victories during six games in the Big South Championship to set a championship record with
55 runs scored.
Toman was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Liberty Baseball program in June
2007, after 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South Carolina.
Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990 season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and coached the
catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 22-year college coaching
veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant
Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman served under Tanner for
seven years at N.C. State.
Toman has recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. During his final years with the Gamecocks, he recruited many of the players who were members of the
2010 South Carolina National Championship team. From 2003-2006, three of the four Gamecock
recruiting classes were ranked first in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.
During his time on the staff in Columbia, S.C., Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA
Regional appearances, including eight straight between 2000 and 2007, and three consecutive
trips to the College World Series (2002-04). Add in his seven seasons at N.C. State, and Toman
has helped lead 14 teams to NCAA Regional appearances.
Toman was a four-year letterwinner at N.C. State from 1981-84, and served as team captain of
the Wolfpack his junior and senior seasons.

Elton Pollock, a 1995 graduate of Presbyterian College, is in his seventh season as
head coach of the Blue Hose baseball program and has been in charge of the team’s transition to the NCAA Division I level. Pollack’s career record at his alma mater is 113-248.
So far this season, he has his alma mater off to its best start since moving to NCAA
Division I status. The Blue Hose have already posted the most wins in a season by the
school at the Division I level. Last season, the Blue Hose had a 15-39 record.
In 2008 under Pollock, the initial NCAA Division I campaign for the Blue Hose, the
team completed the year with 13 wins, which included the program’s first DI series win
over Marist. A standout in both football and baseball at Presbyterian from 1992-95, Pollock led the Blue Hose to their highest winning percentage in their final NCAA Division II
season in 2007.
All-Time Series Against Presbyterian College
The Blue Hose and Flames have only met six times since Presbyterian College joined
Big South Conference play in 2009. Friday’s contest will be the seventh meeting between
the two schools on the diamond.
Liberty holds a 6-0 advantage in the all-time series, having swept each of the previous
three-game Big South series with Presbyterian. Despite the Flames’ unbeaten ways in the
series, three of the six games have been decided by one run, while an additional contest
needed extra innings to be decided.
Last season, the Flames took all three contests at the PC Baseball Complex, April
23-25. Liberty posted victories of 8-7, 13-0 and 16-9 in 10 innings. In 2009, the first time
the two schools ever met on the diamond, Liberty took the first two games of the series
at Worthington Stadium, March 27-29, by the score of 2-1. The Flames closed out the
sweep with a 14-7 win in the series finale.

A Look at Presbyterian College
The Blue Hose enter this weekend’s series having already posted the most wins in
program history at the Division I level. Presbyterian College began moved to Division
I in 2008. Despite their early-season success, the Blue Hose will be looking to snap a
five-game losing streak. PC has not won since defeating Tennessee, 10-6, on April 5 in
Knoxville, Tenn.
The Blue Hose are hitting .299 as team and are averaging 5.5 runs per game this
season. Presbyterian College also leads the Big South with 25 home runs.
Blue Hose first baseman Brad Zebedis leds the conference and the team with a .432
batting average. He has 33 RBIs, nine home runs and a .742 slugging percentage, which
leads the Big South. Outfielder Tony Micklon paces the team with 34 RBIs and 30 runs
scored. The junior has a .325 batting average and has also hit nine home runs.
Shortstop Andrew Williams, the PC shortstop, is second on the team with a .347 batting average. He leads the Blue Hose in steals with six and has hit a Big South-leading
four triples.
Meanwhile, the Presbyterian mound staff has shown significant improvement this season from a year ago, starting the weekend with a 4.43 ERA and allowing 5.6 runs per
game. Opposing batters have hit .280 against the Blue Hose over their first 34 games.
Sunday’s expected starter Jordan Pace leads the Big South with 60 1/3 innings
pitched. The left-hander has posted a 2-4 record with a team-leading 2.98 ERA.
Friday’s expected starter, right-hander Buck Mosteller, is next on the staff with a 3.78
ERA. He enters the weekend with a 3-3 record in nine appearances, eight of which were
starting assignments.
Chandler Knox and Nick Ferguson have seen the bulk of the action out of the bullpen
for PC. Knox, who has made the second-most appearances this season in the Big South
with 17, has a 3-1 record and four saves with a 3.26 ERA over 30 1/3 innings. The freshman right-hander is tied for third in the conference in saves.
Ferguson has appeared in 14 games, all in relief. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 5.14
ERA over 14 innings.

Road Rumblings
The Flames are 10-11 away from home this season. Liberty is 8-11 in road contests
and 2-0 in neutral site games. Liberty is slated to play 30 regular-season contests away
from home. The Flames will square off with 27 of their opponents on their home field this
season and already have met two teams, Rutgers and Monmouth, on a neutral field during
the Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, N.C., March 11-13.
The Flames went 21-10 in road contests in 2010. Liberty posted the 10th-best road
mark in the nation during the year. The Flames went 18-8 in road games and 3-2 in neutral
site contests during the year.
Playing Under the Lights
Liberty is 1-4 in night games this season.The Flames are scheduled to play 15 games
under the stars this year. The first game of this weekend’s series between Presbyterian
College and Liberty is scheduled for under the lights, Friday evening. Last season, Liberty
posted a 5-6 record in night contests.
Liberty Versus the Big South
Liberty, a 20-year member of the Big South Conference, has compiled a 273-193
(.586) record against the Big South Conference’s current membership. The Flames are
5-4 in conference play this season.
Liberty finished the regular season in second place in conference play with a 19-7
record in 2010. The victory total was the most wins by a Liberty team since joining the Big
South in 1992.

Get Your Running Shoes On
What a difference a year makes. So far this season, Liberty has taken advantage
of its team speed, more than doubling its stolen base total from a year ago. The Flames
have stolen 71 bases in 84 attempts this season, compared to 2010, when the Flames
swiped only 27 bases in 42 tries through 33 games. Liberty’s 71 stolen bases lead the
Big South Conference in the category. The Flames were ranked fourth in the nation in
the latest NCAA Division I statistical report for games played through April 10.
Leading the way for the Flames is catcher Casey Rasmus who is 17-for-18 in steal
attempts this season despite playing in 30 games. He is currently third in the Big South
Conference and 25th in the nation in stolen bases. Center fielder Ian Parmley is next on
the team and ranks fourth in the Big South with 16 thefts (16-for-21).
The Flames stolen base totals are definitely a stark contrast from last season, when
only outfielder Curran Redal had stolen eight bases and led the team at this point in the
year. No other Flames had more than four thefts. This season, five Liberty players have
seven or more base thefts. Shortstop Matt Williams joins the previously mentioned
Rasmus and Parmley, with nine stolen bases, while teammates Michael Robertson and
Doug Bream each have seven stolen bases. Bream, a senior, entered the year with a
career total of two stolen bases over his previous three seasons.
Doug Bream Receives National, Conference Honors
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named Liberty senior outfielder Doug Bream and Clemson junior shortstop Brad Miller National Co-Hitters
of the Week, Tuesday. The Flames outfielder was also selected the Southeast Regional
Player of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com, as well as the Big South Player of
the Week for games played through April 10.
Bream batted .737 (14-19) with six runs scored, eight RBIs, two doubles, one triple
and two walks in four games last week. The senior had four or more hits in three of the
games, including a 5-5 day in a midweek contest with James Madison. He finished the
week with a .762 on-base percentage and a .947 slugging percentage.
After picking up a hit and RBI Friday at High Point, Bream had four hits in each of
Liberty’s weekend wins over the Panthers. The outfielder went 4-for-5 and drove in four
runs in Saturday’s 9-0 win and was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs in Liberty’s 14-9
victory on Sunday.
Doing the Dougie
On April 6, outfielder Doug Bream had a career-high five hits in a 16-12 setback at
Worthington Stadium. Bream surpassed his previous career-high of four hits in a 12-7
win over James Madison at Worthington Stadium on April 21, 2010. It is the first time a
Liberty Flame has had five hits in game since outfielder Curran Redal in a 14-8 victory
over High Point in game one of a Big South Conference doubleheader at Worthington
Stadium on April 3, 2010. Bream went 5-for-5 in the contest and scored three runs.
Later in the week, the senior had two four-hit games in victories at High Point to
close the week with a .737 batting average. With three multiple-hit games on the week,
Bream is tied with shortstop Matt Williams with the team lead with 15 mult-hit contests.
The outfielder’s hot hitting week increased Bream’s season batting average 60
points to .365. He leads the Flames in RBIs with 31 and hits with 50. The senior also
leds the team with 10 mulitple-RBI games.
Tyler Bream and Williams Move into Career 2Bs List
With a double each during Liberty’s 14-9 victory at High Point Sunday, junior third
baseman Tyler Bream and shortstop Matt Williams moved into the Top 10 on the school’s
career doubles list with 45 apiece. The duo is tied for 10th place on the all-time list with
45 career doubles. Liberty standouts Jason Benham (1995-98) and Michael Just (200306) are next on the list with 46 two-base hits.
Former Liberty outfielder Phillip Laurent (2003-06) holds the school career record
for two-base hits with 68. He also set the single season record with 27 in 2006.
Last season, Bream and Williams each hit 22 doubles, the second-highest total on
the school’s single season list. Williams is currently tied with outfielder Doug Bream for
the team lead with 11 two-base hits in 2011.

Evans Pitches Way into Record Book
With 47 strikeouts on the year, senior left-hander Steven Evans has moved into fourth
place on Liberty’s all-time strikeout list with 232. He enters the weekend nine strikeouts
short of matching former Liberty left-hander David Bechtold (2002-05), who had 241, for
third place on the career list. Mike Brown (1994-97) is Liberty’s career strikeout leader with
287. Evans is currently third in the Big South with 47 strikeouts this season.
Evans is also tied for fifth on the program’s career wins list with 22. The senior, who
has a career record of 22-10, is tied with Niles Creekmore (1983-86), Alex Dooley (199902) and Michael Solbach (2005-07) on the all-time list. Liberty standout Lee Guetterman
(1978-81) won 29 games during his career to top the Liberty all-time wins list.
In addition, the senior has moved into the Liberty career innings pitched list’s Top 10
with 270 1/3 innings. Evans begins the weekend 10th on the program’s all-time list.
A fixture of the Flames’ pitching staff over the past four years, Evans has a 22-10 career record with a 3.76 ERA. The left-hander has walked 88 batters for a 2.7 to 1 strikeout
to walk ratio during his career.
It is What I Like About Sunday
Liberty has opened the year 5-1 in games played on Sunday, and in its lone loss, it
was defeated 5-4. In Sunday games, the Flames have outscored their opponents, 39-21,
and have a .296 batting average compared to a .230 for their opponents.
Led by starter Steven Evans, who has recorded two wins this season on Sunday,
Liberty pitchers have posted a 3.40 ERA in the six games.
Outfielders Ian Parmley and Michael Robertson, along with shortstop Matt Williams
have also made the most of Sunday play. Parmley has a .500 batting average, with seven
hits in 14 at bats. Robertson has hit .450 with seven RBIs and six runs scored. The junior
has hit both of his home runs this season on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Williams, who leads the Flames with a .371 batting average, has hit .423
on the first day of the week. The shortstop has collected 11 hits, including three doubles.
Williams has five RBIs and scored four runs in his six Sunday games.
Casey Rasmus - Base Cop
Flames catcher Casey Rasmus has been tough to on base stealers this season. The
junior begins the week having thrown out 41% (14-of-34) of would-be base stealers. Rasmus leads the Big South Conference in caught base stealers.
On the flip side, the catcher leads Liberty and ranks second in the Big South with 17
steals. Rasmus is 17-for-18 in steal attempts.
Picking Up the Pace
With new bats and new rules to speed up time between innings and govern mound
visits, the time Flames contests have been played in this season has seen a significant
drop. So far this season, Liberty games have run an average of 2:33, compared to 2:46
at this point in 2010, an 13-minute difference.
Last season through 33 games, Liberty had already played nine games which lasted
three hours or longer, with the the longest being 3:43 in a 14-13, 10 inning setback to Manhattan on March 20. This season, the Flames have had only four games go over three
hours, the longest 3:26 in a wild, come-from-behind, 14-9 victory at High Point, this past
Sunday.
Are New Bats Affecting Power Numbers?
How much has the new bat affected play this season? The Flames have 39 less hits
than last season through 33 games and have seen their extra base hits drop also. The
Flames have 86 extra base hits - 62 doubles, seven triples and 17 home runs, so far in
2011. Liberty has a .398 slugging percentage.
In comparison at this point last season, the Flames had 28 more extra base hits or
25% more than this season. Jim Toman’s 2010 club had 114 extra base hits at this point
of the season - 82 doubles, eight triples and 24 home runs.

Niggli Delivers
Liberty right-hander John Niggli held High Point in check over eight innings, as the
Flames downed the Panthers, 9-0, last Saturday afternoon in a Big South contest at
Coy O. Willard Stadium.
Niggli was in control throughout the first eight innings of the contest, scattering three
hits. He allowed only two High Point runners to move into scoring position throughout
his time on the mound, before giving way to relief pitcher Jacob Kemmerer. The righthander struck out two batters and walked one, running his record to 4-2 on the year.
After allowing a hit to the leadoff batter in the fourth inning, he did not allow another hit
until two outs into his final inning, the eighth.
Niggli and Kemmerer combined to pitch the second shutout by the Flames pitching
stafff this season.
The junior right-hander enters the weekend fifth in the Big South Conference with a
2.66 ERA over 50 2/3 innings. Niggli is holding opposing hitters to a .219 batting average.

Breams Big at VCU
Liberty third baseman Tyler Bream hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs
and left fielder Doug Bream had three RBIs in an 11-1 Flames victory over the VCU
Rams, March 29 at the Diamond in Richmond, Va.
Tyler Bream hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, with Doug aboard to give the
Flames a 6-1 advantage. It was one of two hits the third baseman had on the day. Doug
Bream also had two hits in the game.
Catcher Cody Rasmus had three hits and scored three runs for Liberty, which had
12 hits in the game. Shortstop Matt Williams and designated hitter Marcus Grimaldi had
two hits each.

Flames Take Series with Season-High in Runs
Shortstop Matt Williams drove in five runs with four hits, including one a home run,
as the Liberty Flames cranked out a season-high for runs in a 16-7 victory over the
Winthrop Eagles in the final game of a three-game Big South series, this March 26 at
Worthington Stadium. The win allowed the Flames to take the three-game series, two
games to one, and start the season 5-1 in the Big South.
In the contest, the Flames scored a season-high 16 runs, eclipsing their previous
high in a 12-2 win over Binghamton on March 4. In addition, Liberty tied their seasonhigh for hits in a contest with 20. Every member of the Liberty batting order had at least
one hit in the contest.
Outfielder Michael Robertson and first baseman Jeff Jefferson each had three hits
in the contest. Jefferson also scored twice and drove in three runs. Austin Taylor hit a
three-run home run and drove in four runs for the Flames.
Steven Evans was the beneficiary of the Liberty scoring outburst, evening his record at 3-3 on the year. The senior allowed one run on two hits over 6 1/3 innings.
The day before, the Flames opened the series with a 5-2 win over the Eagles in
game one of a doubleheader. Right-hander Keegan Linza held the Eagles in check to
record his fourth complete game of his career and run his season mark to 5-0. The senior allowed two runs on nine hits, striking out five and walking two batters. It was the
third consecutive start that Linza , against Rutgers, Charleston Southern and Winthrop.
Robertson went 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored for the Flames.
Outfielder Doug Bream added two hits and two RBIs in the game.

Complete Games Highlight Sweep
Each of Liberty’s starting pitchers of its three-game Big South series pitched a complete game, keying a sweep of the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in the first conference series of the year, March 18-20.
After allowing a combined four runs the previous week at the Keith LeClair Classic,
Liberty starters, Keegan Linza, John Niggli and Steven Evans once again turned the
trick, holding the Buccaneers to four runs over the entire three-game series.
Linza got things started, Friday. The senior right-hander outdueled his Charleston
Southern counterpart, going the distance in his second consecutive outing in a 2-1 win.

Linza allowed one run on eight hits, striking out a career-high 10 to run his record
to 4-0 on the year.
Niggli followed-up with a gem of his own on Saturday afternoon. The junior
right-hander threw his first complete game in a Liberty uniform in a 5-1 victory.
Niggli gave up one run on five hits, striking out four. From the third inning on, the
junior dominated, not allowing a Charleston Southern hit until a two-out infield
single in the ninth inning. During the stretch, the Liberty right-hander allowed only
two runners to reach, on a walk in the fifth and another walk in the sixth inning.
On Sunday, Evans made it three consecutive complete games, pitching his
first of the season and the fifth of his career in a 5-2 victory over the Buccaneers.
He allowed two runs on six hits, fanning 12 to set a new career-high and walked
one.
Baker Comes Up Big at Maryland
A strong relief appearance by Garrett Baker and seven extra base hits propelled the Liberty Flames past the Maryland Terrapins, 11-4, March 15 at Smith
Stadium in College Park, Md.
Baker entered the contest with the bases loaded, no one out and one run
already in for Maryland in the first inning and quickly restored order in the contest.
The junior allowed only an unearned run, scattering three hits over eight effective innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked none, running his record
to 2-0. He retired seven consecutive batters from the second through the fourth
inning and later, finished his outing by setting down 12 Terrapins in order.
Despite trailing 3-0 after one inning, the Flames answered with four runs in
the third inning to take a lead they never relinquished. In the frame, second baseman Zach Haley and first baseman Jeff Jefferson hit solo home runs. For Haley,
it was his first of the season, while Jefferson’s roundtripper was his second on the
year.
Haley led all players in the contest with three hits, including two extra base
hits. One of left fielder Doug Bream’s two hits in the game was a bases-clearing
double.
Pitchers Lead the Way at LeClair Classic
Liberty captured the 2011 Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, N.C., March
11-13 with a 3-0 record. Keying the title run were the efforts of Flames starting
pitchers Keegan Linza, John Niggli and Steven Evans.
Linza got things started on March 11, firing the first complete game of the
season by a Liberty starting pitcher in a 5-2 victory over Rutgers. The senior
right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out five and not walking a
Scarlet Knight batter.
Linza retired the first 10 Scarlet Knight batters to face him in the contest and
did not allow a runner past second base until the seventh inning, when Rutgers
scored its first run of the contest. With the win, he runs his record to 3-0 on the
year.
The following day, right-hander John Niggli pitched seven strong innings to
pick up his second victory of the year in a 4-3 win over Monmouth. The junior
gave up two runs on six hits, striking out one and walking none over the first seven innings, before being relieved by Garrett Baker. He followed with 1 2/3 innings
of relief, allowing a run on one hit. J.J. McLeod faced one batter, getting the final
out of the contest to earn his first save of the year.
Left-hander Steven Evans capped the weekend by handcuffing the host East
Carolina Pirates in his longest outing of the year, propelling the Liberty Flames
to a 2-0 victory, March 13. The senior left-hander held the Pirate hitters in check
during his outing, scattering four hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his
first victory of 2011. The left-hander struck out a season-high nine batters and
walked three, running his record to 1-3 on the season. He retired the last eight
batters he faced, before giving way to reliever Dane Beakler with one out. Beakler
completed the shutout with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, as Liberty claimed the
title.

Flames Belt 20 in Game as Bats Come Alive vs. Binghamton
In its home opener on March 4, Liberty pounded out 20 hits, a season-high in a 12-2
win over the Bearcats in the first game of the year at Worthington Stadium. The last time
the Flames had 20 or more hits in a single game since Liberty belted 21 hits in a 16-9,
10-inning victory at Presbyterian College on April 25, 2010.
The Flames hit .396 as team during the three-game series with Binghamton and averaged 9.3 runs per game.
Leading the way during the series was catcher Casey Rasmus, who hit .545 and tied
for the team-high in hits with six. The junior ripped his first home run of the season and
scored four times during the three-game series.
Third baseman Tyler Bream and shortstop Matt Williams also had six hits during the
weekend series. Williams hit his first roundtripper of the year and had a double and triple
among his hits.
In addtion, infielders Austin Taylor and Justin Sizemore helped power the Liberty offense with big offensive weekends. Taylor hit .444 (4/9) with a double and two home runs,
driving in a team-high seven runs during the series. Sizemore belted his first home run of
the year and had five RBIs for the Flames.
Linza and Niggli Come Up Big at UNF
Liberty right-handers Keegan Linza and John Niggli each picked up their first win of
the year, with strong outings Feb. 25-27 at North Florida.
Linza allowed two runs on eight hits over 7 1/3 innings in his second start of 2011,
running his record to 1-0, in a 4-2 victory, Feb. 25 in game one of a doubleheader. The
senior struck out seven batters and walked one. Designated hitter Jeff Jefferson backed
the right-hander with a solo home run, his first of the season in the seventh.
With a 9-1 victory on Feb. 26, Niggli won his first start in a Liberty uniform. The junior
gave up one run on four hits over six innings, moving to 1-0 on the year. He struck out five
batters and walked two.Third baseman Tyler Bream had four hits, driving in two runs and
right fielder Michael Robertson hit his first home run of the year, powering the Flames past
the North Florida Ospreys in the series finale.
Williams Starts Off Strong
Liberty shortstop Matt Williams started his year on a high note, Feb. 18-20 at Mercer.
The junior hit a team-high .533 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBIs during
the Flames’ season-opening series.
Williams was one of two Flames to collect four hits in a contest during the four-game
series. The shortstop went 4-for-5 in game two of a doubleheader on Feb. 19. Designated
hitter Ian Parmley also had four hits in his first game in a Liberty uniform in the team’s
season opener, Feb. 18.
California Dreaming
Six 2011 Flames hail from the Golden State, the second highest number on the roster
next to Liberty’s home state of Virginia. Seven members of the Liberty roster are natives of Virginia. Four Flames each hail from the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Washington, while three are Pennsylvania natives. States also represented
on the Liberty roster are Alabama, Arizona, New York, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Connections - Part I
Three Liberty Flames, catcher Casey Rasmus, third baseman Tyler Bream and infielder Austin Taylor, each have connections to Major League Baseball through family
members.
Rasmus, a junior, is in his first season as a member of the Liberty roster. His brother
Colby is a member of the St. Louis Cardinals and enters his third season as an outfielder
with the team in 2011.
Bream, also a junior, is the son of former major leaguer Sid Bream. Sid Bream, a Liberty standout during his collegiate days, played 12 seasons in the majors (1983-94) with
the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros.
Taylor, a senior, is the nephew of former major leaguer Bill Taylor. Bill Taylor spent
parts of eight seasons with the Oakland A’s, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays.

Connections - Part II
Three Flames are carrying on a family tradition, as a member of their family formerly
played baseball at Liberty.
First baseman/outfielder Doug Bream’s uncle Dave was a member of the Liberty
baseball program from 1982-85.
Third baseman Tyler Bream’s father, Sid, and two uncles, Dave and Sheldon, were
members of the Flames. Sid, who went on to play in the major leagues, was a standout
for Liberty on the diamond from 1979-81. The first baseman and Liberty Athletics Hall
of Fame member was named a NAIA and NABC All-American in 1981, as the Flames
reached the NAIA National Tournament.
Bream’s uncles, Dave and Sheldon, were also members of the Flames baseball team
during their college days. Dave played infield for Liberty from 1982-85, while Sheldon
was an outfielder with the Flames from 1989-93. Tyler and Doug are second cousins.
Meanwhile, pitcher Garrett Baker begins his first season at Liberty. The junior lefthander’s brothers, Jason and Steve, played for the Flames. Jason patrolled the outfield
for the Flames from 1993-95, earning first team All-Big South honors in 1995. Steve was
also an outfielder at Liberty from 1999-02. He was named to the Big South all-conference
second team in 2002.
The Captains
Seniors Jeff Jefferson, Mark Swanson and Steven Evans, along with junior Tyler
Bream have been chosen as captains for the 2011 Liberty Baseball team. The four were
selected by virtue of a team vote.
MLB Draft Picks Dot Roster
A trio of players, who are on the Liberty roster for 2011, have been selected in the
Major League Baseball Draft. Senior Austin Taylor and juniors Michael Robertson and
Tony McClendon have each been selected in a Major League Draft.
Taylor, an infielder, was drafted out of Thomas County Central High School by the
Cincinnati Reds in 2007. The junior college transfer was taken in the 43rd round.
Robertson was also picked in the MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds in 2009. The
outfielder was selected in the 40th round of the draft.
McClendon, in his first year as a Flame, has been selected in two different MLB
Drafts. The outfielder was taken in 2008 by the Houston Astros in the 40th round. Last
year, McClendon was chosen by the Oakland A’s in the 47th round.
Season-long Road Trip Starts Year
The Flames completed a season-long nine game road trip to open the 2011 season.
Durning the swing, Liberty traveled to Mercer, North Florida and Virginia Tech for games
to begin the year. During the trip, the Flames traveled 2,314 miles. Its trip to Jacksonville,
Fla., Feb. 25-27, for a four-game series with North Florida was the longest road trip of the
year for head coach Jim Toman’s squad.

Back-to-Back Home Runs - Curran Redal and Doug Bream connected for back-to-back home runs to lead off the fifth inning,
putting Liberty in front 8-4 over Presbyterian at Worthington Stadium, March 29, 2009. The home runs were two of the Flames’
three home runs in the frame, as first baseman Trey Wimmer later hit a three-run home run. The Flames went on to defeat
the Blue Hose, 14-7.
Five or More RBIs in a Game - Shortstop Matt Williams drove in five runs with four hits in a 16-7 Liberty win over the Winthrop
Eagles, March 26 at Worthington Stadium. Williams had a two-run single in the fifth inning, a home run leading off the sixth and
a two-run double in the seventh, as the Flames scored a season-high 16 runs.
Inside the Park Home Run - Kenneth Negron belted a liner into the right field gap which glanced off the Coastal Carolina right
fielder’s glove to cash in two runners at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C. on April 28, 2007. When the ball rolled all the
way to the wall, the Liberty second baseman came home and scored standing up for his first home run of the season, knotting
the back-and-forth contest with the No. 19 Chanticleers at 7-7. Coastal Carolina rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to take
the contest, 9-7.
Grand Slam Home Run - Trailing 9-5 in the seventh inning, catcher Errol Hollinger drove a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall at
Masters Field in Boiling Springs, N.C., tying the visiting Flames with the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, April 26, 2009. Liberty was
down 9-3 in the contest after six innings. The Flames later won the game in the 11th inning, 10-9, on a lead-off home run by
first baseman Trey Wimmer.
Cycle - Third baseman Chad Miller hit for the cycle in his first four at bats as the Flames downed the Longwood Lancers, 8-0,
April 18, 2006 in a non-conference contest at Worthington Stadium. Miller led off the home half of the first inning with a home
run and in the second, drove in a run with a double to the wall off the left field wall. In the fourth, the third baseman singled and
completed the cycle in the sixth inning with a triple. Miller had two RBIs and scored four runs in the contest.
No-Hitter - Dan Valentin pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against Elon on April 16, 2000, at Worthington Stadium, marking the
first no-hitter by a Flames pitcher in 20 years. Valentin walked seven batters and struck out eight in the game to give Liberty a
4-0 win. This game sparked three-consecutive shutouts for Valentin, during a span of 29-consecutive scoreless innings.
Shutout - Liberty right-hander John Niggli held High Point in check over eight innings, as the Flames downed the Panthers, 9-0,
Saturday afternoon in a Big South contest at Coy O. Willard Stadium. Jacob Kemmerer pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking
out the final two batters of the contest to complete the shutout. It was second blanking of an opponent by the Flames in 2011.
Triple Play - Liberty has never recorded a triple play.

Back-to-Back Home Runs - Mercer catcher Travis Benn and left fielder Derrick Workman led off the third inning with back-toback home runs during the second game of a doubleheader, Feb., 19, 2011 at Claude Smith Field in Macon, Ga. The Bears
went on to take the contest from the Flames, 17-5.
Five or More RBIs in a Game - Coastal Carolina right fielder Daniel Bowman drove in six runs in a 17-1 Chanticleer victory over
Liberty, April 1 at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C. Bowman had two hits, a three-run home run and a two-run single.
He also brought in a run with a squeeze bunt in the contest.
Grand Slam Home Run - Third baseman Jordan Smucker connected for a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning in the first
game of a doubleheader, March 5 at Worthington Stadium. In the game, the Bearcats defeated the Flames, 12-7.
No-Hitter - UNC Asheville’s Jason Walker pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against the Flames on April 29, 2000, at Greenwood
Field in Asheville, N.C. Walker allowed two walks and struck out four, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-0 win. The game marked the
only shutout against the Flames on the season and the first no-hitter thrown against Liberty since 1992.
Shutout - North Florida pitchers Casey Medlen and Tyler Moore combined to hold Liberty to three hits, to shut out the Flames,
5-0, Feb. 25 in the opening game of a four-game series between the two teams at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
Medlen, the starter, allowed two hits, striking out seven and walking one in the win.
Triple Play - Leading 6-4 with a runner on first and second to open the fourth inning, Patrick Gaillard hit a line drive which High
Point second baseman Dustin Hoffman caught. Hoffman then tagged second and threw quickly to first to complete the triple
play. The Flames went on to win the Big South Championship game, 9-7, on May 25, 2006 at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C.
