All present expressed their sympathy to Associate Dean John Lindsay on the death of his daughter, Kathe Lindsay-Jewett (Library). B. Pat Nichelson, Chair of EPC, introduced the new members of the Committee: Jim Dole (Biology) , John Funnan (Theatre) , Paul Kirk (Anthropology), Gary Iobb (Geography), Roberta Madison (Health Science), and leonard Ryrnsza (Business Law). c. The new Associate Deans were introduced: William Toutant, School of the Arts, and Dianne Philibosian, School of Communication and Professional Studies. D. It was announced that the Committee will continue to meet in Sierra North 317 until further notice. E. Laine Hedwall, EPC student representative, was congratulated on his election as Associated Students President. F. During the summer, Associate Vice President Berry met with the Chairs of Chicano Studies, English, Pan African studies, and Speech Communication to decide on common titles for the General Education courses in Section A.1, Written Composition, and Section A. 4, Oral Communication (Dr. Berry's memorandum of understanding is attached to these minutes) . G. Dates for Spring 1988 Experimental courses were announced: August 31 (Monday) Initial circulation from the Schools of new and previously approved Experimental courses; September 14 (Monday) Last day to respond in writing to undergraduate Experimental courses proposed for Spring 1988; September 30 (Wednesday) EPC reviews Spring 1988 Experimental course proposals. l EPC Minutes September 2, 1987 Page 2 H. All present were reminded that courses appearing on the tacitly approved list could be discussed as a substantive issue at the request of any Committee member. However, should such courses become substantive, the Conn:nittee, insofar as possible, will endeavor to hear interested parties prior to deciding the matter. I. It was agreed that Conn:nittee members will be recognized first in all matters involving discussion. Any Conn:nittee member, however, may defer his or her turn to speak to any guest, or use his or her turn to question any guest. J. Pat Nichelson announced that lawrence Littwin, Political Science, had requested the fonnation of an EPC subconnnittee to study the feasibility and desirability of establishing a latin American Studies major. After discussion, it was agreed that the Chair of EPC will work to establish the subconn:nittee, draft its charge, and report back to EPC. K. It was announced that the Academic Internship subconn:nittee (fonnerly SOCEE} will review all Internship courses in order to detennine whether they meet the Academic Internship guidelines adopted by the Faculty Senate on April 9, 1987. L. It was agreed that Conn:nittee member Paul Kirk, in consultation with Mary Gay Doman, Foreign Languages and Literatures, will review the university's current policy on the administrative grade of Incomplete (I) . M. II. All present were reminded that EPC will review the non-General Education curriculum proposals submitted by the School of Humanities and the School of Science and Mathematics at its September 16 meeting. Program Review/Accreditation Assignments 1987-88 After discussion, EPC members agreed to se:rve as Conn:nittee representatives for the following Program Reviews: Art General (B.A. all depts. ) 'Iheatre (B.A.) Business Administration & Economics (B.S. Accreditation in lieu of Program Review) Health Science (B.S.) Engineering (B.S. Accreditation in lieu of Program Review) Computer Science (B.s. (to be assigned) Standard Operating Policies of EPC '!he 1986-87 standard operating policies were reviewed. After discussion, it was the unanimous consent of the Co:mmittee to adopt the operating policies for 1987-88 (attached to these minutes). IV. Procedure for Discussion During EPC Meetings (Discussed under items I.H. and I. of these minutes) V. I Update on Classification of Courses Ric Silva, University mode and level coordinator, reviewed the course reclassifications approved during the past year. It is hoped that the reclassifications will reduce the Student-Faculty Ratio to 18. 6 by 1988, and eventually generate between 30-40 new faculty positions. Conduct a Study: Ensure that MA'IH 140 is being used by the entire carrpus as the basic Statistics course in accordance with EPC policy L. Conduct a Study: Unit limits on specific courses applicable toward the baccalaureate degree M. Conduct a Study: N. other CR/NC/U grading for MATH 094 and 095 Old Business Reconsideration of Change of Grade Policy committee members and guests discussed the proposed policy, as amended by the Associate Deans during the summer. It was the consensus of the Conmtittee that additional revisions would be necessary before a vote could be taken on the procedure for grade corred::.ions. The Office of Academic Programs will revise the grade correction procedure and include it with the Committtee's September 16 agenda. VIII. New Business Definition of B.A./B.S. Degrees: Proposed Interim Policy In o:rder to consider the deparbnent of Biology's request to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree, the University would first have to adopt a policy that explains the differences between the B.A. and B.S. degrees. The Co:mmittee reviewed a csu degree policy and offered suggestions and revisions that will be incorporated into a proposed B.A./B.S. interim degree policy for this campus. Discussion of the interim policy will take place at the EPC September 16 meeting. Adjournment: 3:00 p.m. Next meeting: Wednesday, September 16, 1987, at 1:30 p.m. in Sierra North 317
