Head Coach Jim Toman
Record at Liberty: 100-59-1 (Three Years)
Career Record: Same
After leading the Flames to the best record of any Liberty head coach during his first two years,
68-47-1, Jim Toman reached 100 career victories this past Sunday. The three-year coach becomes
the fastest out of Liberty’s six head coaches in reaching the milestone.
Last season, Liberty recorded a 33-21 overall record, while posting a 17-9 mark in Big South
Conference play, the most victories by the school since joining the conference in 1992. While recording 30 or more wins in each of Toman’s seasons in Lynchburg, Liberty reached the plateau for
the fifth consecutive season for the first time in the program’s 36-year history in 2009.
Liberty set a new fielding standard in 2009, committing the fewest errors, 53 and finishing the
year with the highest fielding percentage, .974, in team history. The 2009 team’s fielding percentage
ranked 16th in the country. From that infield, third baseman Tyler Bream was named a Freshman
All-American by the Collegiate Baseball News.
Pitcher Andrew Wilson became the third player during Toman’s time at Liberty to be taken in the
MLB draft (Atlanta Braves), while catcher Errol Hollinger later signed a free agent contract (Arizona
Diamondbacks).
In 2008, the Flames fashioned a 13-3-1 record in the month of May to finish the Toman’s first
season at Liberty with a 35-26-1 mark. The record made Toman the winningest first-year coach in
the program’s 36-year history. He guided the Flames to their third straight Big South Championship
title game appearance, claiming the conference’s runner-up position in 2008. Liberty’s May record
was the best ever by Flames team.
In addition, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing
batters during the year. The Flames’ strikeout total led the Big South Conference and their 8.2
strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season’s end. Two pitchers from the staff, Ryan
Page and David Stokes, went on to be drafted and play in the professional ranks this past summer.
Page was taken in the 20th round of the MLB draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, while Stokes was
picked in the 28th round by the Detroit Tigers.
Liberty also eclipsed the school’s single-season doubles mark, ripping 155 two-base hits. The
total ranked the Flames fifth in the country in the category.
Liberty finished its season with a 14-7 record in conference play. The mark allowed the Flames
to claim the No. 2 seed for the Big South Championship, their highest seed for the Big South Baseball Championship since a No. 1 seed in 2000. Liberty would go on to post four consecutive doubledigit victories during six games in the Big South Championship to set a championship record with 55
runs scored.
Toman is the sixth head coach in the 37-year history of the Liberty Baseball program. The second-year skipper comes to Liberty after 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner’s coaching
staff at South Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990
season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and worked with
the team’s catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 19-year college
coaching veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association
Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman served under Tanner
for seven years at N.C. State.
Toman has recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. From
2003-2006, three of the four Gamecock recruiting classes were ranked first in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. Toman’s 2003, 2005 and 2006 classes were named the top recruiting classes by
the publication.
During his time on the staff in Columbia, S.C., Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA
Regional appearances, including eight-straight since 2000, and three consecutive trips to the College World Series (2002-04). Add in his seven seasons at N.C. State, and Toman has helped lead
15 teams to NCAA Regional appearances.
In addition, South Carolina posted eight-straight seasons of 40 or more wins with Toman on the
Gamecock coaching staff, including 2007. During Toman’s 11 seasons at South Carolina, he helped
the Gamecocks to a combined 500-220 (.694) record.
Toman earned four baseball letters at N.C. State, 1981-84, and was captain of the Wolfpack his
junior and senior seasons. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational industrial education in 1985. He received a Master of Science degree in sport management from N.C. State in 1995.
Upon graduation, Toman entered the coaching profession as an assistant at Richmond County
High School in Rockingham, N.C., for two years. He moved into the collegiate coaching ranks in
1989 as an assistant at Florida International for one year. At FIU, he was responsible for the weight
program, worked with the squad’s catchers and coached first base. Toman joined the N.C. State
staff before the 1990 season.

The Coaches
Liberty Head Coach Jim Toman has the Flames out to their best record during his
three year tenure and on Sunday, reached 100 career coaching victories. During his first
two seasons, he guided the Flames to 68 wins, the most during the first two years under
any head coach in program history, and best winning percentage (.591) over the same
span.
Last season, Liberty posted the most victories in Big South Conference play with a
17-9 mark, since joining the conference in 1992. The Flames recorded an overall record
of 33-21 in Toman’s second year.
A 21-year member of the college coaching ranks, he served 18 years as a member
of Ray Tanner’s staffs at South Carolina and N.C. State. Toman was named the 2002
Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year
and recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. From
2003-2006, three of the four Gamecock recruiting classes were ranked first in the nation
by Collegiate Baseball.
George Mason Head Coach Bill Brown is in his 29th season as the head coach at his
alma mater. In that span, Brown has gone from being the then-youngest Division I head
coach in the nation to the dean of coaches in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
Brown, a 1980 George Mason graduate, has been honored as CAA Coach of the
Year a record six times and has guided his alma mater to some of its greatest accomplishments.
Since 1985, the Patriots have won two CAA titles and finished second three other
times, making six appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
George Mason also has posted at least 30 victories in a season 13 times in the last
23 years under his guidance, including a school-record 42 wins and an at-large berth in
the NCAA Tournament in 2009. The Patriots were nationally-ranked for the first time in
school history rising into the top 30 in both the National College Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate Baseball polls, last season.
George Mason’s all-time leader in coaching victories, with a 29-year mark of 822-7135, led the Patriots to a 42-14 record last season.
Maryland head coach Eric Bakich was hired as the sixth head coach in Maryland
baseball history on June 29, 2009, coming off seven successful seasons as an assistant
coach at Vanderbilt.
Bakich spent the previous seven seasons with the Commodores, where he established himself as one of the best recruiters in college baseball, hauling in top-25 classes
all seven years in Nashville, including the top-ranked class in 2005 and second-ranked
class in 2008.
In addition to his duties as recruiting coordinator, Bakich trained the Commodores’
outfielders and served as a hitting coach. In 2004, Vanderbilt experienced the biggest
batting-average increase in program history, hitting .304 that season coming off a .258 clip
the previous year. Vanderbilt finished in the top three in the SEC in team batting average
three of the last four seasons under Bakich’s tutelage.
Bakich brings familiarity with ACC baseball, as he began his college coaching career
as a volunteer assistant at Clemson in 2002, assisting in the Tigers’ recruiting efforts
and working with the team’s outfielders and infielders. Clemson advanced to the College
World Series that season.

Toman Reaches 100 Coaching Wins
With a sweep of Gardner-Webb this past weekend, Liberty head coach Jim Toman
reached career win 100 on Sunday.
Of the six head coaches in Liberty history, Toman is the fastest to reach 100 coaching victories. Toman reached the milestone in 160 games, eclipsing program founder and first head coach Al Worthington, who reached his 100th win in 166 games.
All-time against George Mason, Maryland
Tuesday’s meeting between George Mason and Liberty will be the 57th meeting between the two teams on the diamond. It will also be the second match-up between the
squads this season, as the Flames took a 9-7 win over the Patriots at Worthington Stadium on March 30. George Mason holds a 32-24 advantage in the all-time series between
the two teams.
Liberty will be looking for its first victory against George Mason at Sphuler Field since
a 5-4 victory on March 25, 2007. Last season, the Patriots defeated the Flames, 12-0, in
Fairfax, Va., on April 8, 2009.
Wednesday will be the first meeting between Maryland and Liberty since April 23,
1992. The Terrapins defeated the visiting Flames, 14-3.
From 1985 through 1992, Maryland and Liberty met eight times, with the Flames holding a 5-3 advantage in the all-time series.
Scouting the Patriots
This past weekend, George Mason had its four-game winning streak snapped by a
three-game sweep at the hands of Georgia State. The Patriots enter the week hitting .327
as a team, averaging 8.76 runs per game.
The big bat in the George Mason line-up has been shortstop Ryan Soares. The shortstop has hit .411 in 41 games, with a team-leading 60 RBIs and eight home runs. He is
one percentage point ahead of third baseman Mark Hill. The clean-up hitter has hit .410
with 36 RBIs and 41 runs scored. He is the only Patriot to start every game this season.
On the mound, George Mason has posted a 4.79 team ERA, allowing 5.73 runs per
game. Opponents have hit .274 against the staff.
Tuesday’s expected starter Kris Mengle has a 3-2 record with a 7.17 ERA in 11 appearances this season, seven of them starts.
Darren McLean and A.J. Johnson have seen plenty of action out of the Patriot bullpen. McLean leads the team with 18 appearances and has a 2-2 record with a 3.97 ERA.
Johnson has entered 17 games this season, recording a 2-1 mark with six saves and a
4.12 ERA.
Scouting the Terrapins
Maryland has lost 11-straight contests entering its game Tuesday at Towson. The Terrapins’ contest on Wednesday against the Flames is their last non-conference game of
their 2010 campaign.
The Terrapins begin the week with a .255 team batting average, producing 4.38 runs
per game. Maryland has been activate on the base paths, as they have already broken
the previous school record (103) with 105 stolen bases this season. The Terps rank ninth
in the country in base thefts.
Outfielder/designated hitter Bradon Padula leads Maryland with a .345 batting average. Shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez, the only Terrapin to play in every game of the season,
leads the team with 34 runs scored and has a .286 batting average. The shortstop also
has a team-leading 23 stolen bases.
On the mound, Maryland has a 7.01 ERA, allowing 7.8 runs per game this season. A
Wednesday starter has not been named for the Terps.
Senior Dan Gentzler has saved seven of the 15 Maryland wins this year. The righthander has a 1-2 record with a 5.40 ERA. He is averaging a strikeout an inning with 28 in
28 innings. Gentzler has been called upon a team-high 23 times this season.

Flames Reach 30 Wins
With an 11-2 victory over the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs Friday night, Liberty won 30
games in a season for the sixth consecutive year, and each of the first three years under
head coach Jim Toman. It is the first time in the 37-year history of the program, the
Flames have won 30 or more games six-straight years.
Last season, the Flames posted a 33-21 mark to record its fifth-straight season of 30
wins or more. It was the first time Liberty had accomplished the five-year feat.
Before 2008, the Liberty baseball program had won 30 or more games in a season
three consecutive years. The Flames won 30 or more contests three consecutive seasons from 2000-02.
What is It About Fridays?
The Flames are 10-1 in Friday contests this season, outscoring their opponents, 9141. Toman’s squad is hitting .335 on the sixth day of the week, while holding opponents
to a .226 average.
Scoring First
Liberty has gotten on the scoreboard first in 32 of its 44 contests this season. The
Flames are 27-5, when scoring first. Liberty is 5-7 when its opponents score first in a
contest.
Umberger Moves Up On K List
With two strikeouts in his start Sunday in a 10-7 win over Gardner-Webb at Worthington Stadium, Liberty senior right-hander Dustin Umberger moved into a tie for fourth
place on the school’s career strikeout list with 220 strikeouts.
Currently, Umberger is tied with former Liberty standout and major leaguer Lee
Guetterman on the list. Guetterman, who pitched for the Flames from 1978-81, also
compiled 220 strikeouts during his Flames career.
In addition, Umberger is five strikeouts away from passing Benji Miller on the career
list. Miller struck out 224 batters during his Liberty career from 1995-98. Mike Brown,
who pitched at Liberty from 1994-97, holds the career strikeout mark with 287.
Umberger became the 53rd pitcher in Big South Conference history to record 200 or
more strikeouts on March 17 with two strikeouts against Duke. The senior became the
first Flame since David Bechtold in 2005 to strike out over 200 batters. Bechtold struck
out 241 hitters from 2002-05.
Returning from a medical redshirt in 2009, Umberger is 1-2 on the year with a 5.06
ERA in 13 appearances, with seven starts this season. The right-hander has struck out
26 batters in 37 1/3 innings.
What’s the RISP?

Turning Two
After turning seven double plays last weekend, Liberty has turned 48 double plays
this season, and ranked 25th nationally in double plays in the last NCAA Statistical Report for games through April 25. The Flames total eclipsed last year’s season total of
36, recorded over 54 games. The program season record is 77 double plays, set by the
1998 squad.
In addition, the Liberty Flames turned five ground balls into double plays during their
9-1 win over St. John’s on March 12. The five double plays turned by the Liberty infield
are the most in a game by the Flames over the past 11 seasons. In 2008, the Flames
turned four double plays in a game twice. The contest happened a week apart, as Liberty had four double plays in an 11-5 win over Army, March 8. A week later, the Flames
recorded four double plays in a 5-0 loss at Southern Miss, March 15. Liberty also turned
four double plays this season in a 6-3 victory over Lehigh on Feb. 27.
Bats Power Recent Success
The Flames have won 19 out of their last 23 games, posting a .826 winning percentage over the span. Fueling the surge, which started on March 27, have been the
Liberty bats. The Flames have hit .351 as a team during the stretch, raising their team
average 28 points, from .299 to .327. In addition, Liberty has outscored its opponents by
77 runs over the period, 197-120.
Over the 23 games, two Flames have hit better than .400, led by outfielder Curran
Redal who has hit .442 during the stretch. The senior outfielder has 46 hits during the
span, raising his batting average to a team-leading .391. He also had a 17-game hitting
streak during the span, ending last Tuesday at Elon. It is the longest hit streak of the
season by a Flame.
Second baseman P.J. Jimenez has hit .440 over the span. The senior has 40 hits
during the stretch. The senior is currently on a 10-game hit streak.
Longest Current
REDAL, Curran
18 RICHARDSON, Ju.
Taking One for the Team
In each of the past two seasons, the Flames have set a new team record for being
hit by a pitch, and this season are on pace to once again eclipse the record. Liberty
enters this week, having been plunked 93 times in 2010. The tally is two shy of last
season’s team record 95, which was set over 54 games.
The Flames rank third nationally in the category in the latest NCAA statistics,
through games of April 25. Catcher Nathan Thompson has been hit 16 times to lead the
Flames and rank fourth in the Big South.
Teufel Named Big South Co-Pitcher of the Week
Liberty left-hander Shawn Teufel was selected the Big South Co-Pitcher of the Week
for games played April 19-25. The senior shared the award with Gardner-Webb reliever
Adam Izokovic.
Teufel pitched his second complete game of the season and his first career shutout
in blanking Presbyterian College, last Saturday. He scattered five hits and was never
challenged after the first inning, holding the Blue Hose to a .161 batting average and
striking out eight. Just two Blue Hose runners reached second base over the final eight
innings in Liberty’s 13-0 victory.
Flames Break Through in Extras
With a seven-run uprising in the 10th inning, Liberty won its first extra innings contest of the season on April 25. The victory reversed a trend where extra frames had not
been kind to the Flames.
In the span of a week earlier in the year, the Flames saw three of their contests go
to extra innings. The span started with St. John’s on March 14 and ended against Manhattan on March 20. Unfortunately for Liberty, it ended up on the short end of the score
in each of the three games.
Last season, the Flames had two games go to extra innings, a 4-3 win at South
Alabama on Feb. 21 and a 10-9 victory at Gardner-Webb on April 26.

Tough to K - Redal at Again
After being one of the toughest hitters in the nation to strike out in 2009, Liberty
outfielder Curran Redal is once again proving to be hard to strike out this season. The
senior has fanned only seven times in 184 at bats this season, or once per every 26.2
at bats. The outfielder ranked as the fourth-toughest batter to strike out in the country in
the latest NCAA statistics, through games of April 25.
Last season, Redal finished the year, striking out once every 21.3 at bats, ranking
him ninth among NCAA Division I batters in the country. Redal struck out only 10 times
in 213 at bats over 54 games in 2010.
The outfielder began the week ranked fourth in the Big South Conference in on
base percentage with a .478 average.
Thompson, Teufel Help Flames Complete Sweep
The Flames scored seven runs in the 10th inning and catcher Nathan Thompson
drove in seven runs, propelling Liberty to a 16-9 win over the Presbyterian Blue Hose to
complete a sweep of the three-game Big South series, April 25.
Thompson had four hits, including a three-run home run and a bases-clearing double for the Flames. P.J. Jimenez, Tyler Bream and Michael Robertson had three hits
apiece in the contest for Liberty.
Cameron Giannini came in during the ninth with the winning on run on third and
one out and was able to induce an inning-ending double play to move the game to extra
frames. He pitched a scoreless 10th inning to run his record to 3-2. Flames starter
Steven Evans struck out a career-high 11 in the contest.
The day before, pitcher Shawn Teufel pitched his second complete game of the
year in leading the Liberty Flames to a 13-0 shutout victory over the Presbyterian Blue
Hose.
Except for the opening inning, Teufel was in control throughout the contest in recording the second shutout of the season by the Liberty Flames pitching staff.
With the first complete game shutout of his career, Teufel moves to 8-1 on the year.
He scattered five hits over nine innings, striking out eight and walking two.
Curran Redal led the Flames with three hits, scoring twice and driving in a run. Kenneth Negron, Tyler Bream, Jimenez and Justin Richardson had two hits apiece.

Beakler K’s 15
Reliever Dane Beakler struck out 15 batters, the most by a Liberty pitcher in a single
contest since 2000, as the Liberty Flames held off the Presbyterian Blue Hose, 8-7, April
23 in the opening contest of a Big South three-game series at the PC Baseball Complex.
Beakler entered the game in the bottom of the first inning for the Flames and quickly
restored order to move to 4-2 on the year. The senior right-hander pitched 6 2/3 scoreless frames of relief, striking out a personal career-high and Liberty season-high of 15
batters.
The strikeout total is the most by a Flames pitcher since Dan Valentin had 15 strikeouts in a complete game, 5-0 shutout victory at UNC Asheville on April 29, 2000. The
Liberty record for a single game is 20 strikeouts by Benji Miller in a 3-2 win over Coastal
Carolina on May 10, 1998 to clinch the Flames’ second Big South title.

Flames Snap JMU Hex
Doug Bream drove in four runs with four hits and the Liberty Flames posted two
five-run innings, to slug their way past the James Madison Dukes, 12-7, April 21 in a nonconference contest at Worthington Stadium.
The victory snapped an eight-game losing skid against the Dukes by the Flames.
Liberty had not defeated James Madison since April 11, 2006.
Tyler Bream and Kenneth Negron each had three hits in the contest for Liberty, which
had 16 total hits on the afternoon. Of Doug Bream’s four hits, one was his second home
run of the season.
The Flames plated five runs in both the second and sixth innings in the contest.
Five Liberty pitchers took to the mound in the contest, with Dane Beakler, the third
pitcher of the game for the Flames, picking up the win to run his record to 3-2 on the season. Right-hander Carter Browning worked the final 3 1/3 innings to earn his first save of
the year.
Sweep of Nationally Ranked Team
Liberty’s three-game sweep of No. 26 VMI the weekend of April 16-18 was the first
time the Flames have ever swept a nationally-ranked opponent. The win was the first
time since May 24, 2009, when Liberty defeated then No. 13 Coastal Carolina at the Big
South Championship to force a second game for the conference title, that the Flames
have defeated a ranked opponent.
Flames Take Three from No. 26 VMI
All nine Flames in the starting line-up had at least one hit to power a 19-hit attack,
as Liberty defeated the No. 26 VMI Keydets, 13-8, April 18 at Worthington Stadium to
complete a three-game sweep of the Big South Conference series. Curran Redal had
four hits and scored twice, while Justin Richardson added three hits, a RBI and scored
twice for the Flames.
Left-hander Steven Evans upped his record to 5-1, allowing three runs on 10 hits
over the first 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven batters and walked one.
The day before, Liberty overcame a Keydet advantage with a seven-run sixth to
defeat VMI, 9-6. Trailing 6-2 in the sixth, the Flames sent 10 men to the plate in scoring seven runs on six hits and an error to take a 9-6 advantage in the contest. A two-run
double by shortstop Matt Williams to give Liberty the lead, highlighted the frame. Catcher
Nathan Thompson hit his fifth home run earlier in the game.
Reliever Dane Beakler evened his record at 2-2, with help from 2 2/3 innings of
scoreless relief from Tim Dudley. Josh Richardson struck out the last batter in the ninth
with two men on to record his fifth save.
Held in check for the most part through the first six innings of April 16’s opener, Liberty erupted for six seventh-inning runs and then held off the No. 26 VMI Keydets for a
12-9 victory.
The Flames, who had only two hits through the first six innings, sent 12 men to the
plate in the seventh, turning its three-run deficit into a three-run advantage.
Trey Wimmer led the Flames with four RBIs on two hits, one a two-run home run.
Pitcher Shawn Teufel picked up his seventh win, while Josh Richardson earned the save.
Jimenez’s Multi-Hit Binge
Second baseman P.J. Jimenez had eight multi-hit games in 10 contests from
March 27 through April 11. During the span, the senior hit .564, with at least one hit in
each of the 10 contest. The burst at the plate has raised the senior’s batting average to
its highest at .388 on the year.
Over the period, Jimenez has had three hits in a contest four times. Each of the four
contests were Flames’ wins.
Teufel Strikes Out Career High
Senior left-hander Shawn Teufel struck out 10 batters in a 10-2 Liberty victory at
Radford, April 9. The 10 strikeouts were a career-high for the left-hander. Previously, he
had struck out nine on three different occasions.
Teufel moved to 6-1 on the season in the contest, allowing two runs on eight hits over
eight innings. He walked only one batter to go along with the 10 strikeouts. The senior
finished strong, retiring the last nine batters he faced in the game.

Curran Redal had three hits, including a two-run home run, as the Liberty Flames
defeated the Radford Highlanders, 7-6, April 11 at the RU Baseball Field to complete a
sweep of a three-game Big South series.
Starter Steven Evans picked up the win to move to 4-1 on the year. The left-hander
gave up four runs on 11 hits. He struck out six batters and walked two. J.J. McLeod, the
last of four Flames to take the mound in the contest, earned his fourth save of the season. He pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out three batters and walking one. Liberty
pitchers stranded 15 Highlander baserunners in the contest.
Besides Redal with three hits, Tyler Bream and P.J. Jimenez had two hits apiece for
the Flames. The Highlanders loaded the bases twice in the game, once with one out and
once with two outs, but were unable to score a run.
The Flames defeated Radford, 3-1, in a pitcher’s duel, the day before. Starter Keegan
Linza and reliever Josh Richardson combined to keep Radford off the scoreboard in the
game.
Linza ran his record to a Big South-leading 7-0. The junior gave up one run on five
hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six batters and walked five.
Richardson earned his third save of the season, with 3 2/3 innings of relief. The
freshman struck out three batters. He gave up five hits and received an assist from left
fielder Doug Bream in the bottom of seventh, when the outfielder threw out a runner trying to tie the game at 2-2 at home plate.
Tyler Bream had two hits for the Flames, including a RBI double in the eighth to extend the Liberty advantage to 3-1.
In the opener April 9, Liberty jumped out to a five-run advantage in the first inning and
Shawn Teufel struck out a career-high 10 batters, as the Flames cruised to a 10-3 victory
over the Highlanders.
Teufel moved to 6-1 on the season. The left-hander allowed three runs on eight hits
over eight innings. He struck out 10 and walked one, retiring the last nine batters he
faced.
Liberty batted around to open the contest, plating five runs on five hits and two errors. Jimenez had three hits for the Flames. Matt Williams, Jeff Jefferson and Michael
Robertson each had two hits apiece. Robertson also had three RBIs.
Liberty Scorches Old Dominion
Liberty opened the game with seven runs in the top of the first inning and never
looked back, downing the Old Dominion Monarchs, 12-9, April 6 at Bud Metheny Stadium
in Norfolk, Va. With the win, the Flames posted their sixth win in their last seven contests.
Four Flames, Curran Redal, Doug Bream, Tyler Bream and P.J. Jimenez, had three
hits each in the contest. Jeff Jefferson hit a two-run home run, his second roundtripper of
the year, for Liberty, capping the seven-run first frame.
Freshman right-hander Cameron Giannini picked up his second consecutive win to
run his record to 2-1 on the season. The first of four Liberty pitchers in the contest, the
right-hander allowed one run on five hits through the first five innings.
Redal Garners Player of the Week Honors
Liberty senior outfielder Curran Redal was named the Big South Conference Player
of the Week for games played March 29-April 4.
Redal hit .579 (11-19) with three multi-hit games and a .654 on-base average from
the leadoff spot in the Liberty order, helping the Flames post a 4-1 mark during the week.
He opened his week with two walks, a hit-by-pitch and an RBI in Liberty’s 9-7 win against
George Mason on March 30, and followed that by reaching base five times in a win at
VCU, the next day. In the 7-4 win, Redal was 3-3 with a walk, hit-by-pitch, stolen base
and run scored.
The Flames center fielder hit .571 (8-14) in Liberty’s three-game series against High
Point at Worthington Stadium, April 2-3. He notched a hit and a run scored in the Flames’
6-4 win in the series opener, April 2, and went 7-10 in doubleheader split on April 3. In
the first game, Redal had the first five-hit game of his Liberty career, and added two hits
in the nightcap. For the week, Redal slugged .684, had 13 total bases and walked four
times. In addition, he added two doubles, four runs scored and three RBIs.
He is the second Flame tabbed the conference’s Player of the Week. Third baseman
Tyler Bream was named the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 19-21.

Teufel Named to Watch List
Liberty senior Shawn Teufel has been listed on the 2010 National Pitcher of
the Year Watch List. The Flames left-hander is one of 49 pitchers on the initial list
released by the College Baseball Foundation, March 23.
Teufel has posted a 2.19 ERA with a 8-1 record this season. He is among the
national ERA leaders, ranking eighth in the latest NCAA National Statistical Summary through games of April 18. In addition, the left-hander is tied the Big South
lead in wins.
Teufel leads the conference with 61 innings pitched. He has also struck out
53 batters, ranking fourth in the conference.
Teufel has set personal milestones this season. Last Saturday, he pitched his
first complete-game shutout at Presbyterian, 13-0.
On April 9 at Radford, he struck out a career-high 10 batters in a 10-2 Liberty
win. A week before (April 2), the left-hander recorded his first career complete
game in a 6-4 win over High Point.
After yielding one run in the opening inning of Liberty’s season opener at Kennesaw State, Teufel ran off a string of 24 scoreless innings, before giving up a run
during the Flames’ 8-4 win over Manhattan, March 19.
Bream Backs Giannini’s First Win
Tyler Bream had three hits, including a home run, and Cameron Giannini
pitched seven strong innings, as the Liberty Flames defeated the VCU Rams, 7-4,
March 31 in an evening contest at the Diamond.
Bream drove in three runs with the trio of hits, including his third home run of
the season and his first triple of the year. Center fielder Curran Redal also had
three hits in the contest. He also walked and scored a run for the Flames.
Giannini, making his second career start, recorded his first win in a Liberty
uniform. The freshman right-hander allowed four runs on four hits over seven innings. He struck out four batters and walked three. Josh Richardson finished up
for the Flames, pitching two scoreless frames.
Double Delight
First baseman Trey Wimmer drove in five runs with three doubles, propelling
the Flames past the George Mason Patriots, 9-7, March 30 at Worthington Stadium.
Wimmer went 3-for-3 with a walk in the contest, scoring two runs. He got
things started in the first inning with a two-run double, and later scored in a threerun inning. His second two-base hit in the fifth inning scored a run, giving the
Flames the lead for good. In the seventh, he chased home his final two runs of
the contest with his third double of the game.
Wimmer’s three doubles tie 13 other Liberty players for most doubles in a
game in program history. The last time a Flame had three two-base hits in a
contest was on May 21, 2009, when catcher Errol Hollinger had three in a 20-10
win over High Point at the Big South Conference Baseball Championship at McCormick Field in Asheville, N.C.
Dane Beakler, the second Liberty pitcher of the contest, evened his record at
1-1 on the year. The reliever yielded one run, while scattering seven hits over 4
1/3 innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. J.J. McLeod entered the
contest with two outs and retired the one batter he faced with the bases full for his
third save of the season.
Teufel’s Scoreless Streak Ends
Senior left-hander Shawn Teufel gave up only his second run of the season
March 19. A Manhattan home run in the fourth halted the left-hander’s scoreless
innings streak at 24, which spanned over five starts for the senior. Teufel had
allowed only one prior run, in the first inning of his season-opening start at Kennesaw State on Feb. 19, and has not allow one since.
The streak tops a previous career-high of 10 scoreless innings by the pitcher
last season, from April 4-18. The scoreless span left the left-hander five innings
shy of the school record of 29, set by Tim Harrell in 2000.
Best Start Since 1995
Liberty started its 2010 season with a 9-0 record. The mark tied the 1995 Flames for the best start to a year in the 36year history of the program. Liberty tied the mark with a 10-1 win over Delaware State at Worthington Stadium on March
7.
The Flames’ start was the best during the three-year tenure of Liberty Head Coach Jim Toman. During Toman’s first
season in 2008, the Flames opened the year, 5-1.
Liberty also tied the programs’ record for consecutive wins at the NCAA Division I level with the streak. Five other
Flames squads have won nine consecutive games (2009, 2008, 2006, 1995, 1985). The 1976 Liberty team holds the
school record for consecutive victories with 15.
Bream Named Conference Player of the Week
Liberty sophomore third baseman Tyler Bream was named as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball
Player of the Week for Feb. 23.
Bream hit .700 (7-for-10) in the Flames’ three-game, season-opening sweep of Kennesaw State. The third baseman
scored six runs and drove in five RBIs during the three-game series, reaching base three times in each contest to record
a .688 on-base percentage. The sophomore had two doubles and a towering two-run home run during the weekend to
post a 1.200 slugging percentage.
Bream opened the season on Feb. 19 by going 3-for-3, including an RBI-double and a two-run homer, while driving
in four runs. The following afternoon, the third baseman walked twice, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and scored twice.
In the final game of the series on Feb. 21, Bream finished the series by going 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored
to lead the Flames to the sweep.

By Liberty: Left-hander Shawn Teufel pitched his second complete game of the year in leading the Liberty Flames to a 13-0 shutout
victory over the Presbyterian Blue Hose, April 24. Teufel scattered five hits over nine innings, striking out eight and walking two. After
the first inning, he did not allow a runner to pass second base.
By Opponent: Three Virginia Tech pitchers allowed the Flames just four hits in a 10-0 win, March 23 at English Field in Blacksburg,
Va. Starter Manny Martir pitched seven scoreless innings for the Hokies.
