Head Coach Jim Toman
Record at Liberty: 97-58-1 (Three Years)
Career Record: Same
After leading the Flames to the best record of any Liberty head coach during his first two years,
68-47-1, Jim Toman is is closing on win 100 in his third year.
Last season, Liberty recorded a 33-21 overall record, while posting a 17-9 mark in Big South
Conference play, the most victories by the school since joining the conference in 1992. While recording 30 or more wins in each of Toman’s seasons in Lynchburg, Liberty reached the plateau for
the fifth consecutive season for the first time in the program’s 36-year history in 2009.
Liberty set a new fielding standard in 2009, committing the fewest errors, 53 and finishing the
year with the highest fielding percentage, .974, in team history. The 2009 team’s fielding percentage
ranked 16th in the country. From that infield, third baseman Tyler Bream was named a Freshman
All-American by the Collegiate Baseball News.
Pitcher Andrew Wilson became the third player during Toman’s time at Liberty to be taken in the
MLB draft (Atlanta Braves), while catcher Errol Hollinger later signed a free agent contract (Arizona
Diamondbacks).
In 2008, the Flames fashioned a 13-3-1 record in the month of May to finish the Toman’s first
season at Liberty with a 35-26-1 mark. The record made Toman the winningest first-year coach in
the program’s 36-year history. He guided the Flames to their third straight Big South Championship
title game appearance, claiming the conference’s runner-up position in 2008. Liberty’s May record
was the best ever by Flames team.
In addition, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing
batters during the year. The Flames’ strikeout total led the Big South Conference and their 8.2
strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season’s end. Two pitchers from the staff, Ryan
Page and David Stokes, went on to be drafted and play in the professional ranks this past summer.
Page was taken in the 20th round of the MLB draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, while Stokes was
picked in the 28th round by the Detroit Tigers.
Liberty also eclipsed the school’s single-season doubles mark, ripping 155 two-base hits. The
total ranked the Flames fifth in the country in the category.
Liberty finished its season with a 14-7 record in conference play. The mark allowed the Flames
to claim the No. 2 seed for the Big South Championship, their highest seed for the Big South Baseball Championship since a No. 1 seed in 2000. Liberty would go on to post four consecutive doubledigit victories during six games in the Big South Championship to set a championship record with 55
runs scored.
Toman is the sixth head coach in the 35-year history of the Liberty Baseball program. The second-year skipper comes to Liberty after 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner’s coaching
staff at South Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990
season at N.C. State.
During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and worked with
the team’s catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 19-year college
coaching veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association
Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman served under Tanner
for seven years at N.C. State.
Toman has recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. From
2003-2006, three of the four Gamecock recruiting classes were ranked first in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. Toman’s 2003, 2005 and 2006 classes were named the top recruiting classes by
the publication.
During his time on the staff in Columbia, S.C., Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA
Regional appearances, including eight-straight since 2000, and three consecutive trips to the College World Series (2002-04). Add in his seven seasons at N.C. State, and Toman has helped lead
15 teams to NCAA Regional appearances.
In addition, South Carolina posted eight-straight seasons of 40 or more wins with Toman on the
Gamecock coaching staff, including 2007. During Toman’s 11 seasons at South Carolina, he helped
the Gamecocks to a combined 500-220 (.694) record.
Toman earned four baseball letters at N.C. State, 1981-84, and was captain of the Wolfpack his
junior and senior seasons. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational industrial education in 1985. He received a Master of Science degree in sport management from N.C. State in 1995.
Upon graduation, Toman entered the coaching profession as an assistant at Richmond County
High School in Rockingham, N.C., for two years. He moved into the collegiate coaching ranks in
1989 as an assistant at Florida International for one year. At FIU, he was responsible for the weight
program, worked with the squad’s catchers and coached first base. Toman joined the N.C. State
staff before the 1990 season.

The Coaches
Liberty Head Coach Jim Toman has the Flames out to their best record during his
three year tenure and is just three wins from career win 100. During his first two seasons,
he guided the Flames to 68 wins, the most during the first two years under any head
coach in program history, and best winning percentage (.591) over the same span.
Last season, Liberty posted the most victories in Big South Conference play with a
17-9 mark, since joining the conference in 1992. The Flames recorded an overall record
of 33-21 in Toman’s second year.
A 21-year member of the college coaching ranks, he served 18 years as a member
of Ray Tanner’s staffs at South Carolina and N.C. State. Toman was named the 2002
Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year
and recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. From
2003-2006, three of the four Gamecock recruiting classes were ranked first in the nation
by Collegiate Baseball.
Elon Head Coach Mike Kennedy is in his 14th season. The winningest coach in school
history, Kennedy has led the Phoenix to 11 campaigns of 30 or more victories.
In addition, after winning 41 last season, Kennedy’s Elon teams have won 40 or more
games in three of the last four seasons. His 2006 squad set a new school record with
45 victories, while the 2008 team fell just one win shy of that mark and captured the program’s first NCAA Division I league tournament title.
Last year, Elon won its third Southern Conference regular-season title in four years
and earned a No. 2 seed in the Atlanta Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Kennedy’s
squad finished the SoCon season with a 22-3 record and went 41-18 overall. The team
also collected the program’s first top-25 finish at the Division I level, ranking 24th in the
final Baseball America poll and 27th in the last National Collegiate Baseball Writers Asscociation top-30 poll. Kennedy was chosen as the league’s coach of the year for the third
time in his career.
Prior to the start of the 2009 season, Kennedy was selected to serve as the pitching
coach for USA Baseball’s National Team (Collegiate) during the summer. Under Kennedy’s guidance, Team USA’s pitching staff recorded a 2.16 ERA in the squad’s 24 games
and won the 2009 World Baseball Challenge title.
Closing in on 100 Coaching Wins
With 97 wins during his three seasons behind the Liberty bench, Flames Head Coach
Jim Toman enters the week three games shy of career win 100.
Of the six head coaches in Liberty history, Toman is on pace to reach 100 coaching
victories the fastest. Program founder and first coach Al Worthington is currently the fastest to the milestone, reaching his 100th win in 166 games. Toman has recorded his 97
wins in 156 games.
All-time against Elon
Tuesday’s meeting between Elon, a former member of the Big South Conference, and
Liberty will be the 24th meeting all-time between the two teams on the baseball diamond.
The two teams met earlier in the month at Worthington Stadium, with the Phoenix emerging with a 5-3 win on April 13. Before that meeting, the two teams had not met since 2003.
Liberty holds a 15-8 advantage in the all-time series, which began in 1976.

Teufel Named Big South Co-Pitcher of the Week
Liberty left-hander Shawn Teufel has been selected the Big South Co-Pitcher of the
Week for games played April 19-25. The senior shares the award with Gardner-Webb
reliever Adam Izokovic.
Teufel pitched his second complete game of the season and his first career shutout
in blanking Presbyterian College on Saturday. He scattered five hits and was never challenged after the first inning, holding the Blue Hose to a .161 batting average and striking
out eight. Just two Blue Hose runners reached second base over the final eight innings in
Liberty’s 13-0 victory.
Bats Power Recent Success
The Flames have won 16 out of their last 19 games to post a .842 winning percentage
over the span. Fueling the surge, which started on March 27, are the Liberty bats. The
Flames have hit .358 as a team during the stretch, raising their team average 29 points,
from .299 to .329.
Over the 19 games, two Flames have hit better than .400, led by outfielder Curran
Redal who has hit .455 during the stretch, with 40 hits to raise his batting average to a
team-leading .393. He has had 11 multi-hit games, including a five and a four-hit game
during the stretch.
Second baseman P.J. Jimenez has hit .440 over the span, while outfielder Michael
Robertson has posted a .415 average.
Flames Among Big South Leaders
Shawn Teufel has posted a 8-1 record to lead the Big South in wins. Teufel also leads
the conference with 70 innings pitched. The left-hander will also enter the week ranked
third in the league with a 2.19 ERA and fourth in strikeouts with 61.
Fellow pitcher Steven Evans is also among the Big South leaders in ERA and strikeouts. The left-hander has posted a 3.23 ERA and struck out 56 batters to rank fifth in the
conference in both categories.
On the hitting side, outfielder Curran Redal ranks second in the conference with 66
hits and his .393 batting average is tied for fifth. The senior is also fourth in the Big South
with a .478 on-base percentage.
Redal At It Again
After being one of the toughest hitters in the nation to strike out in 2009, Liberty outfielder Curran Redal is once again proving to be hard to strike out this season. The senior
has fanned only six times in 168 at bats this season, or once per every 28 at bats. The
outfielder ranked as the second-toughest batter to strike out in the country in the latest
NCAA statistics, through games of April 18.
Last season, Redal finished the year, striking out once every 21.3 at bats, ranking him
ninth among NCAA Division I batters in the country. Redal struck out only 10 times in 213
at bats over 54 games in 2010.
The outfielder enters the week ranked fourth in the Big South Conference in on base
percentage with a .478 average.

Beakler K’s 15
Liberty reliever Dane Beakler struck out 15 batters, the most by a Liberty pitcher in
a single contest since 2000, as the Liberty Flames held off the Presbyterian Blue Hose,
8-7, Friday in the opening contest of a Big South three-game series at the PC Baseball
Complex.
Beakler entered the game in the bottom of the first inning for the Flames and quickly
restored order to move to 4-2 on the year. The senior right-hander pitched 6 2/3 scoreless frames of relief, striking out a personal career-high and Liberty season-high of 15
batters.
The strikeout total is the most by a Flames pitcher since Dan Valentin had 15 strikeouts in a complete game, 5-0 shutout victory at UNC Asheville on April 29, 2000. The
Liberty record for a single game is 20 strikeouts by Benji Miller in a 3-2 win over Coastal
Carolina on May 10, 1998 to clinch the Flames’ second Big South title.
Flames Snap JMU Hex
Doug Bream drove in four runs with four hits and the Liberty Flames posted two fiverun innings, to slug their way past the James Madison Dukes, 12-7, last Wednesday in a
non-conference contest at Worthington Stadium.
The victory snapped an eight-game losing skid against the Dukes by the Flames.
Liberty had not defeated James Madison since April 11, 2006.
Tyler Bream and Kenneth Negron each had three hits in the contest for Liberty,
which had 16 total hits on the afternoon. Of Doug Bream’s four hits, one was his second
home run of the season.
The Flames plated five runs in both the second and sixth innings in the contest.
Five Liberty pitchers took to the mound in the contest, with Dane Beakler, the third
pitcher of the game for the Flames, picking up the win to run his record to 3-2 on the season. Right-hander Carter Browning worked the final 3 1/3 innings to earn his first save of
the year.
Victory 1,000 Reached
With a 10-2 win at Raford on April 9, Liberty recorded its 1,000th win in the program’s
history. Flames’ left-hander Shawn Teufel, who ran his record to 6-1 in the contest, set
a new career-high of his own with 10 strikeouts in the game.
Liberty baseball is in its 37th year of intercollegiate competition. The Flames posted
an 11-14 record in its inaugural season under Al Worthington in 1974.

Sweep of Nationally Ranked Team
Liberty’s three-game sweep of No. 26 VMI the weekend of April 16-18 was the first
time the Flames have ever swept a nationally-ranked opponent. The win was the first
time since May 24, 2009, when Liberty defeated then No. 13 Coastal Carolina at the Big
South Championship to force a second game for the conference title, that the Flames
have defeated a ranked opponent.
Flames Take Three from No. 26 VMI
All nine Flames in the starting line-up had at least one hit to power a 19-hit attack,
as Liberty defeated the No. 26 VMI Keydets, 13-8, April 18 at Worthington Stadium to
complete a three-game sweep of the Big South Conference series. Curran Redal had
four hits and scored twice, while Justin Richardson added three hits, a RBI and scored
twice for the Flames.
Left-hander Steven Evans upped his record to 5-1, allowing three runs on 10 hits
over the first 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven batters and walked one.
The day before, Liberty overcame a Keydet advantage with a seven-run sixth to
defeat VMI, 9-6. Trailing 6-2 in the sixth, the Flames sent 10 men to the plate in scoring seven runs on six hits and an error to take a 9-6 advantage in the contest. A tworun double by shortstop Matt Williams to give Liberty the lead, highlighted the frame.
Catcher Nathan Thompson hit his fifth home run earlier in the game.
Reliever Dane Beakler evened his record at 2-2, with help from 2 2/3 innings of
scoreless relief from Tim Dudley. Josh Richardson struckout the last batter in the ninth
with two men on to record his fifth save.
Held in check for the most part through the first six innings of April 16’s opener, Liberty erupted for six seventh-inning runs and then held off the No. 26 VMI Keydets for a
12-9 victory.
The Flames, who had only two hits through the first six innings, sent 12 men to the
plate in the seventh, turning its three-run deficit into a three-run advantage.
Trey Wimmer led the Flames with four RBIs on two hits, one a two-run home run.
Pitcher Shawn Teufel picked up his seventh win, while Josh Richardson earned the
save.
Jimenez’s Multi-Hit Binge
Second baseman P.J. Jimenez had eight multi-hit games in 10 contests from
March 27 through April 11. During the span, the senior hit .564, with at least one hit in
each of the 10 contest. The burst at the plate has raised the senior’s batting average to
its highest at .388 on the year.
Over the period, Jimenez has had three hits in a contest four times. Each of the four
contests were Flames’ wins.

Umberger Joins Big South 200 Ks Club
With two strikeouts in his first start of the season on March 17 at Duke, Liberty senior right-hander Dustin Umberger became the 53rd pitcher in Big South
Conference history to record 200 or more strikeouts. The senior became the first
Flame since David Bechtold in 2005 to strike out over 200 batters. Bechtold struck
out 241 hitters from 2002-05.
Curently, Umberger’s career strikeout totals ranks fifth on the school’s career
strikeout list. The right-hander has struck out 213 batters, and enters the week
eight away from passing Lee Guetterman on the Liberty list. Gueterman pitched
for the Flames from 1978-81. Mike Brown, who pitched at Liberty from 1994-97,
holds the career strikeout mark with 287.
Returning from a medical redshirt in 2009, Umberger is 0-2 on the year with
a 5.26 ERA in 11 appearances this season. The right-hander has struck out 19
batters in 25 2/3 innings this season. He has made five starts.
Liberty Scorches Old Dominion
Liberty opened the game with seven runs in the top of the first inning and
never looked back, downing the Old Dominion Monarchs, 12-9, April 6 at Bud
Metheny Stadium in Norfolk, Va. With the win, the Flames posted their sixth win
in their last seven contests.
Four Flames, Curran Redal, Doug Bream, Tyler Bream and P.J. Jimenez, had
three hits each in the contest. Jeff Jefferson hit a two-run home run, his second
roundtripper of the year, for Liberty, capping the seven-run first frame.
Freshman right-hander Cameron Giannini picked up his second consecutive
win to run his record to 2-1 on the season. The first of four Liberty pitchers in the
contest, the right-hander allowed one run on five hits through the first five innings.

Redal Garners Player of the Week Honors
Liberty senior outfielder Curran Redal was named the Big South Conference Player
of the Week for games played March 29-April 4.
Redal hit .579 (11-19) with three multi-hit games and a .654 on-base average from
the leadoff spot in the Liberty order, helping the Flames post a 4-1 mark during the week.
He opened his week with two walks, a hit-by-pitch and an RBI in Liberty’s 9-7 win against
George Mason on March 30, and followed that by reaching base five times in a win at
VCU, the next day. In the 7-4 win, Redal was 3-3 with a walk, hit-by-pitch, stolen base
and run scored.
The Flames center fielder hit .571 (8-14) in Liberty’s three-game series against High
Point at Worthington Stadium, April 2-3. He notched a hit and a run scored in the Flames’
6-4 win in the series opener, April 2, and went 7-10 in doubleheader split on April 3. In
the first game, Redal had the first five-hit game of his Liberty career, and added two hits
in the nightcap. For the week, Redal slugged .684, had 13 total bases and walked four
times. In addition, he added two doubles, four runs scored and three RBIs.
He is the second Flame tabbed the conference’s Player of the Week. Third baseman
Tyler Bream was named the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 19-21.
Teufel Named to Watch List
Liberty senior Shawn Teufel has been listed on the 2010 National Pitcher of the Year
Watch List. The Flames left-hander is one of 49 pitchers on the initial list released by the
College Baseball Foundation, March 23.
Teufel has posted a 2.19 ERA with a 8-1 record this season. He is among the national ERA leaders, ranking eighth in the latest NCAA National Statistical Summary through
games of April 18. In addition, the left-hander is tied the Big South lead in wins.
Teufel leads the conference with 61 innings pitched. He has also struck out 53 batters, ranking fourth in the conference.
Teufel has set personal milestones this season. This past Saturday, he pitched his
first complete-game shutout at Presbyterian, 13-0.
On April 9 at Radford, he struck out a career-high 10 batters in a 10-2 Liberty win. A
week before (April 2), the left-hander recorded his first career complete game in a 6-4 win
over High Point.
After yielding one run in the opening inning of Liberty’s season opener at Kennesaw
State, Teufel ran off a string of 24 scoreless innings, before giving up a run during the
Flames’ 8-4 win over Manhattan, March 19.
Bream Backs Giannini’s First Win
Liberty third baseman Tyler Bream had three hits, including a home run, and Cameron Giannini pitched seven strong innings, as the Liberty Flames defeated the VCU
Rams, 7-4, March 31 in an evening contest at the Diamond.
Bream drove in three runs with the trio of hits, including his third home run of the
season and his first triple of the year. Center fielder Curran Redal also had three hits in
the contest. He also walked and scored a run for the Flames.
Giannini, making his second career start, recorded his first win in a Liberty uniform.
The freshman right-hander allowed four runs on four hits over seven innings. He struck
out four batters and walked three. Josh Richardson finished up for the Flames, pitching
two scoreless frames.
Double Delight
Liberty first baseman Trey Wimmer drove in five runs with three doubles, propelling
the Flames past the George Mason Patriots, 9-7, March 30 at Worthington Stadium.
The Liberty first baseman went 3-for-3 with a walk in the contest, scoring two runs.
He got things started in the first inning with a two-run double, and later scored in a threerun inning. His second two-base hit in the fifth inning scored a run, giving the Flames the
lead for good. In the seventh, he chased home his final two runs of the contest with his
third double of the game.
Wimmer’s three doubles tie 13 other Liberty players for most doubles in a game in
program history. The last time a Flame had three two-base hits in a contest was on May
21, 2009, when catcher Errol Hollinger had three in a 20-10 win over High Point at the
Big South Conference Baseball Championship at McCormick Field in Asheville, N.C.

Dane Beakler, the second Liberty pitcher of the contest, evened his record at 1-1 on
the year. The reliever yielded one run, while scattering seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. He
struck out two and did not walk a batter. J.J. McLeod entered the contest with two outs
and retired the one batter he faced with the bases full for his third save of the season.
Michael Robertson had three hits in the contest for Liberty and scored three times.
Teufel’s Scoreless Streak Ends
Senior left-hander Shawn Teufel gave up only his second run of the season March
19. A Manhattan home run in the fourth halted the left-hander’s scoreless innings streak
at 24, which spanned over five starts for the senior. Teufel had allowed only one prior run,
in the first inning of his season-opening start at Kennesaw State on Feb. 19, and has not
allow one since.
The streak tops a previous career-high of 10 scoreless innings by the pitcher last
season, from April 4-18. The scoreless span left the left-hander five innings shy of the
school record of 29, set by Tim Harrell in 2000.
Best Start Since 1995
Liberty started its 2010 season with a 9-0 record. The mark tied the 1995 Flames for
the best start to a year in the 36-year history of the program. Liberty tied the mark with a
10-1 win over Delaware State at Worthington Stadium on March 7.
The Flames’ start was the best during the three-year tenure of Liberty Head Coach
Jim Toman. During Toman’s first season in 2008, the Flames opened the year, 5-1.
Liberty also tied the programs’ record for consecutive wins at the NCAA Division
I level with the streak. Five other Flames squads have won nine consecutive games
(2009, 2008, 2006, 1995, 1985). The 1976 Liberty team holds the school record for consecutive victories with 15.
Bream Named Conference Player of the Week
Liberty sophomore third baseman Tyler Bream was named as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week for Feb. 23.
Bream hit .700 (7-for-10) in the Flames’ three-game, season-opening sweep of Kennesaw State. The third baseman scored six runs and drove in five RBIs during the threegame series, reaching base three times in each contest to record a .688 on-base percentage. The sophomore had two doubles and a towering two-run home run during the
weekend to post a 1.200 slugging percentage.
Bream opened the season on Feb. 19 by going 3-for-3, including an RBI-double and
a two-run homer, while driving in four runs. The following afternoon, the third baseman
walked twice, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and scored twice. In the final game of the
series on Feb. 21, Bream finished the series by going 4-for-5 with a double and three
runs scored to lead the Flames to the sweep.

him for the George Mason career RBI record with 201.
Grand Slam Home Run
By Liberty: Trailing 9-5 in the seventh inning, catcher Errol Hollinger drove a 1-0 pitch over the left field at Masters Field in Boiling
Springs, N.C., tying the visiting Flames with the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, April 26, 2009. Liberty was down 9-3 in the contest after six
innings. The Flames later won the game in the 11th inning, 10-9, on a lead-off home run by first baseman Trey Wimmer.
By Opponent: George Mason’s Justin Bour hit the first of his two home runs in the game, a grand slam in the sixth inning, to push the
Patriots past Liberty, 13-0, on March 26, 2008 at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
No-Hitter
By Liberty: Dan Valentin pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against Elon on April 16, 2000, at Worthington Stadium, marking the first
no-hitter by a Flames pitcher in 20 years. Valentin walked seven batters and struck out eight in the game to give Liberty a 4-0 win. This
game sparked three-consecutive shutouts for Valentin, during a span of 29-consecutive scoreless innings.
By Opponent: UNC Asheville’s Jason Walker pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against the Flames on April 29, 2000, at Greenwood
Field in Asheville, N.C. Walker allowed two walks and struck out four, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-0 win. The game marked the only
shutout against the Flames on the season and the first no-hitter thrown against Liberty since 1992.
Triple Play
By Liberty: Liberty has never recorded a triple play.
By Opponent: Leading 6-4 with a runner on first and second to open the fourth inning, Patrick Gaillard hit a line drive which High
Point second baseman Dustin Hoffman caught. Hoffman then tagged second and threw quickly to first to complete the triple play. The
Flames went on to win the Big South Championship game, 9-7, on May 25, 2006 at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C.
Shutout
By Liberty: Left-hander Shawn Teufel pitched his second complete game of the year in leading the Liberty Flames to a 13-0 shutout
victory over the Presbyterian Blue Hose, Saturday. Teufel scattered five hits over nine innings, striking out eight and walking two. After
the first inning, he did not allow a runner to pass second base.
By Opponent: Three Virginia Tech pitchers allowed the Flames just four hits in a 10-0 win, March 23 at English Field in Blacksburg,
Va. Starter Manny Martir pitched seven scoreless innings for the Hokies.
