—Darcy Corben, Project Manager, DEK Printing Machines LTD
Founded in 1968, DEK Printing Machines Ltd,
member of the Dover Technologies group of
companies, provides state-of-the-art precision
screen-printing systems and pre-placement
process solutions to the electronic assembly
market. This is an environment that demands
high levels of accuracy, automation and process
control. Fulfilling this demand involves more than
merely building and delivering machines; DEK is
deeply involved in studying and refining the
pre-placement process.
The company’s head office and manufacturing
center is based in Weymouth, England. Employing
more than 500 people in the UK, the company
reports a turnover in excess of $100m. Each of
DEK’s products are backed with the company’s
unique DEK DirEKt philosophy, and because their
customers require consistency, uniformity and
accuracy from screen printers, an effective quality
system is vital. This was instrumental in DEK’s
attainment of ISO 9001.
DEK Printing regularly reviews its manufacturing
processes as it strives to become evermore
efficient in providing its customers with a faster,
sharper and smoother service.
Glovia Easily Fits
The company found that having installed a
complete internal card-driven Kanban just-in-time
(JIT) system it needed an enterprise resource
planning (ERP) solution that would easily fit
around its manufacturing operation. DEK also
wanted a solution that has a fast implementation
timescale and to resolve critical millennium
compliance issues the company was facing with
its legacy systems.
DEK looked at a number of solutions before
deciding on Glovia. “We chose Glovia over other
suppliers and systems because we wanted a
system that we could cope with implementing
and running, and one that wasn’t unnecessarily
complex,” commented Darcy Corben, Project
Manager at DEK Printing. “We were very
impressed with Glovia’s implementation track
record compared with those of the other
companies competing for the business. We were
also reassured by the fact that we would be
purchasing this major application from the owner
of the software, rather than via a third party,” he
added.
Modules Are In Control
The modular nature of the Glovia’s ERP product,
glovia.com, meant that DEK could pick and
choose only the applications it felt it really needed.
DEK wanted to be sure that all the financial,
purchasing and sales data that the company had
was controlled. Sales order, billing, sales analysis
and purchasing modules were all installed. There
was also a requirement for some manufacturing
and operation modules. The company also
needed a system to control the bill of materials
and therefore purchased, from Glovia, a master
production schedule (MPS) to give DEK buying
information.
invoicing. It even feeds information into our
financial ledgers. Helping all our departments work
together smoothly and effectively, glovia.com is
promoting our already excellent DEK teamwork
beyond the premier division,” said Corben.
DEK needed to run multiple companies on the
system but at the same time there are things
that it wished to keep in sync across all units.
The best example of this is part numbers. For
commercial reasons the company wants to make
sure that customers are always quoted the same
number for the same part by all DEK units. Corben
comments, “In glovia.com we are able to quote
the same part number throughout the world and
it’s a full multi-currency system. This is essential
for DEK as customers require us to trade in many
currencies.”
“glovia.com is helping us take an even more telling global perspective
with our multinational corporate accounts, and also bringing those
global benefits to national customers at the same time,”
—Darcy Corben, Project Manager, DEK Printing Machines LTD
It also required a way of turning raw materials
into finished goods, at least retrospectively, for
traceability reasons, so DEK purchased a work
order module from Glovia too. “When a customer
order is logged with glovia.com, it now becomes
the trigger for the entire manufacturing process
- from buying, inventory control, assembly and
customer option configuration to shipping and
Efficient, Global Perspective
“We have become even more efficient - from
the moment an order is taken, to the day the
completed screen printer is commissioned on the
customer’s shop floor. For our customers it means
we are faster, sharper and even easier to deal
with,” continued Corben. DEK is now enjoying the
benefits of a truly global system, with many of its
sites worldwide now using glovia.com, including
the USA, France, Germany and Singapore, with
Taiwan next on the list. So if, for example, a
North American customer needs a replacement
component from Weymouth, the local DEK USA
support office can check the parts inventory at the
UK HQ, even outside UK office hours. A requisition
can be logged and, as soon as Weymouth opens
for business, those urgent spares will be winging
their way across the Atlantic.
