8th Grade Ancient and Medieval World History
Syllabus
Eighth grade Social Studies: is made up of a year-long survey covering ancient through medieval world
history. We will begin in the river valley civilizations and end with the Renaissance. This course continues in
9th grade with modern world history.
Supplies: The following items are required for this course (EVERY DAY):




1.5 inch binder
Dividers
paper
appropriate writing utensils
Textbook: Do not write in your book or turn down page corners to hold your place. There is a class set of
textbooks that we use in the classroom. You will use the online textbook at home.
Online Textbooks: Your entire textbook is online under Student Resources and on my webpage. Your login
and password are your regular Mountain Brook network login. You can also get an app for your book for
your phone/ipad.
Class Attendance: Be here and ON TIME. You are expected to be in your seat when the bell rings. At the
end of class remain in your seat until you are dismissed.
Mountain Brook Portal: Through the Portal, you can access the Internet, your G Drive and Google Docs.
The link is on the front of the MBJH website. You use your regular network login and password to access it.
Moodlerooms: is our online classroom. You are expected to check frequently as PowerPoints, handouts,
and guided targets etc will be uploaded and you’re expected to use them to study.
Written work: Written work in class must legible - print neatly so I can read it. If I can't read it I can't grade
it!! Projects will be typed.
Tests: Social Studies test days are odd numbered days. I will give you information in class about the type of
test and what it will cover. Do NOT check in or out of school and miss this class on test days. The monthly
calendar will be in your binder, on Moodlerooms, and on my webpage. It will keep you up-to-date well in
advance.
Our make-up test policy is that all major tests are made up before school and are scheduled by the teacher.
You may have a different format test than the one that was taken in class on the scheduled day. Tests are
kept on file and your parents are welcome to set up an appointment with you to see them.
Make up work: It is your responsibility to make up ALL work missed by any absence. You have a monthly
calendar and I will make all attempts to follow it closely. Email me if you are absent. Get a trusted student
in your class to check with before you return to class so that you will not be clueless. If you have questions
that a classmate cannot answer concerning your absence come see me. Any work missed must be handed to
me upon your arrival. It is your responsibility to follow up.
Weighted Grades: All 8th grade World History classes use weighted grades. There are 4 categories of
grades that will show up in your iNow grade book. They are 0% for organization, time management, getting
assignments in on time (this will not count in your average but will allow parents to assess your overall
classroom performance), 5% for writing skills, 25% for quizzes, in-class assignments and special days and
70% for summative assessments and 9 weeks projects.. For a complete explanation please refer to
Moodlerooms for grading explanation.
Class Expectations:
1. Failure to be respectful to me, my substitute, and/or each other will not be tolerated. Parents may be
phoned during class if needed.
2. You will be given an assigned seat and number.
3. All homework is to be done in your binder unless otherwise specified. It is due when the tardy bell rings.
If turned in after checked, it is automatically 1/2 credit. Your calendar gives you all assignments - no
excuses. All missed work has a grace period until the binder is turned in for half credit – if you haven’t
turned it in then, it becomes a zero.
4. All students are expected to do their own work at all times. You will receive a zero if you copy someone
else's work and pass it off as your own - this includes homework as well as projects, and out of class writing.
Do not ever allow a student to copy your work without your teacher's permission.
5. Cell Phones should not be in my classroom. New school policy is that they MUST remain in your locker
from 8-3. If this policy is violated, you will receive detention and your parents will have to pick up your
phone from Mr. Dearman after school.
