Dear Walter Johnson Parents/Guardians and Students:
This letter provides the latest information about testing that will occur in May and June of this year: Advanced
Placement (AP) testing, the Maryland High School Assessments (MHSA), PARCC, and final exams. MCPS bus
transportation will follow the regular morning and afternoon schedules. Daily study halls will be held in the
cafeteria for students who must ride the morning bus but do not have HSA exams.
Advanced Placement Tests (AP): AP tests will be given May 2 - 13, 2016. The testing schedule is set by the
College Board and is the same for all students in the United States. Any student taking an AP exam is excused
from all classes on the day of the scheduled exam. AP exam times vary by subject with most taking
approximately three (3) hours and thirty (30) minutes. If students are scheduled to complete an afternoon AP
exam, the students must make arrangements for transportation to their afternoon exams and home from
the afternoon exam. NO afternoon AP exam will be completed in time for students who normally ride
MCPS bus transportation. Students will be notified of their testing locations by Ms. Gayle Evans, AP Testing
Coordinator. Locations will also be posted on the WJ website at www.walterjohnson.com/depts/AP. Questions
about AP exams can be directed to Ms. Evans by email at [email protected]. Students do not attend their
regular classes on the days when they are taking AP tests.
Maryland High School Assessments (MHSA): MHSAs will be given May 23 – 24, 2016. A different test is
assigned each day, beginning at 7:45 a.m., and lasting approximately three (3) hours. Please note: On two
days during MHSA testing, we will have delayed openings: Monday, May 23 (Government MHSA) and
Tuesday, May 24 (Biology MHSA). Students who are NOT taking MHSAs Monday and/or Tuesday must arrive
at school and be in their first scheduled class by 12 p.m. Students who attend Edison High School of Technology
are expected to go to their Edison classes when they are not testing; the bus will run on the regular schedule.
Refer to Attachment A for testing and class schedules during this week.
PARCC Algebra 1 and PARCC English 10
PARCC tests will be given Wednesday, May 25 through Thursday, May 26, 2016 with make-ups occurring the
following week on Tuesday, May 31 through Thursday, June 2, 2016. Also on two days for PARCC tests, we
will have delayed openings: Wednesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 26, 2016. Refer to Attachment A for
the PARCC testing schedule.
Senior Final Exams: Monday, May 23 and Tuesday, May 24, 2016 are senior final exam review days. Senior
final exams are also scheduled from Tuesday, May 24 through Friday, May 27. Refer to Attachment A for the
senior review and exam schedule.
• All senior final examinations will count 25 percent of the 4th marking period grade.
Second Semester Final Exams: Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) requires that final
examinations/culminating activity be administered to all students at the end of the semester. A review day is
scheduled prior to exams and teachers should not present new material or schedule tests during the review day.
• All underclass students’ final examinations will count for 25 percent of the 2nd semester grade.
Underclassmen Final Exams: Monday, June 13, 2016 is the review day for grades 9-11 in all classes. Final
exams begin on Tuesday, June 14 through Friday, June 17, 2016 with make-ups occurring both on Friday,
June 17 and Monday, June 20 (by arrangement only). Refer to Attachment B for the second semester final
examination, make-ups, and the adjusted exam schedule. Refer to Attachment C for a form to be completed by
students with their individual schedules. During exam week, students are only required to attend school to take
their individual examinations or culminating activities. No early exams will be given to students.
Important Note About Final Exam Exemptions: For this school year (2015-2016), high school students will be
exempt from two-hour final exams during the second semester in “B” courses for which there is a PARCC test or
MHSA administered in May 2016. All other final exams will continue as planned this school year, with
additional changes taking place in the 2016-2017 school year. The subjects that students will be exempt from
for final exams second semester are: English 10; Algebra 1; National, State, and Local Government and Biology.
Absence on Final Exam Days: Exams will only be rescheduled due to extenuating circumstances and will be
evaluated on an individual basis. Students must contact their teacher AND administrator for approval to
make-up or reschedule exams. NO waivers or requests will be granted after the start of exams. Make-Up
Dates for Final Exams should be pre-arranged by June 10, 2016. Parents needing further information should
contact teachers and/or grade level administrators. Contact information for Walter Johnson staff may be found at
www.walterjohnson.com/staff/directories.aspx.
Returning School Property: Students must return books and other issued items to their teachers on or before
their exam days. Parents, please encourage your student to promptly return all issued materials.
