Educator Program and Financial Support- Spring 2013
Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, the Jane Goodall Institute’s (JGI) global environmental and humanitarian
program, is working with motivated and passionate New York school educators to help implement
high quality service-learning in their classrooms. Through this work, educators and their students are
provided in-person, online and financial support as they develop and implement a service-learning
campaign.
Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall and a group of Tanzanian students,
the Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen — for
our communities, for animals and for the environment. With hundreds of
thousands of young people in more than 120 countries, the Roots & Shoots
network connects youth of all ages who share a desire to create a better
world. Young people identify problems in their communities and take action.
Through service projects, youthled campaigns and an interactive website,
Roots & Shoots members are making a difference across the globe.
Educators who participate in this support program receive:
• Online training in the Roots & Shoots model of high quality servicelearning (on average this takes 30 minutes);
• In-class environmentally-themed hands-on service-learning workshops
offered by Roots & Shoots team members;
• Prepaid credit card with $180 to support a service-learning campaign;
• Student attendance at the annual Roots & Shoots Celebration of Service
hosted by New York University in collaboration with the Wallerstein
Collaborative for Urban Environmental Education.

Educator Program and Financial Support- Spring 2013
This three month opportunity begins now! Here’s how program works:
By March 1, 2013 - Educators register for this opportunity and are provided materials to complete a 30 minute online
service-learning tutorial before or on March 8, 2013.
March 8-15, 2013 - Educators work with Roots & Shoots staff to identify a community issue and an associated
service-learning campaign to be planned with students. The campaign can be something that is already in the
works!
To help kickstart classrooms that might be struggling to get started, a member of the Roots & Shoots team is
available to lead an interactive hands-on environment-themed service-learning workshop in the classroom.
Educators can choose one of our pre-designed workshops to be shared with students.
By March 15, 2013 - Educators send a paragraph explanation of the service-learning campaign ideas that they will
complete with their class. Once campaign ideas are submitted, educators will receive a $180 Visa gift card for expenses
and materials related to the service learning project.
March 15 - End of April - Educators complete their service-learning campaign with students.
Saturday, May 11, 2013 - Join us! Educators and students display their project at our Celebration of Service at NYU.
This event includes seats for the youth keynote speaker, lunch and participation in an interactive and hands-on
environmental learning lab. It is free of charge to participating classrooms. Registration for this event ends on April 19,
2013.
During this three-month timeline, Roots & Shoots staff are here to support educators in any
way they need to make their work with students a success!
