A Short Report
on
the CIMPA-ICTP-UNESCO-MESR-MICINN-PAKISTAN Research School on
Local Analytic Geometry
(February 4-13, 2012)
The main purpose of the School was to introduce the PhD students and young
researchers to local analytic geometry, its methods and applications in
mathematics and some other disciplines of science.
The School was organized at Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences
(ASSMS), Lahore-Pakistan. A total of 49 PhD students and young researchers
participated in the School. Among these, 14 were females. Most of female
participants were from Pakistan. The participating foreign students and
researchers came from Indonesia, Iran, Nepal, Philippines, Uzbekistan and
Vietnam.
The School had the following academic program:

As one can see from the program, each day one speaker delivered two lectures of
one hour each in the morning time and one tutorial in the afternoon. This made it
easy for the students to concentrate each day on one single topic. The tutorials
were the highlight of this research School and they provided an opportunity for
real successful interaction between the participants and the speakers. This made
the students comfortable to ask all kind of questions related to the morning
lectures. Thus the Tutorials turned out to be very productive learning sessions.
Most of the time, there was also a tutorial on SINGULAR, showing the students
how they can use computer algebra systems in their research in different
branches of pure and applied mathematics.
Another special feather of this School was, that the students enjoyed very much
to see the strong connections between different disciplines of mathematics. In
fact they were quite excited about it. Most of the students were able to follow the
course quite well due to a good interaction and mutual understanding between
students and the speakers. All the speakers did an excellent job in delivering
their lectures with clarity and giving very good examples.
This is a very brief report. A detailed report can be found at

In the end, I want to thank CIMPA, ICTP, UNESCO, IMU and HEC for
supporting this School. I want to congratulate and thank the speakers for the job
exceptionally well done. Very special thanks to Prof. Michel Waldschmidt for
coming to Lahore and assist us with many useful suggestions and advices to
make this School an active and useful research training for the young scholars of
South-East-Asia. Of course we must give a big applaud to Prof. Gerhard Pfister
for the organization of scientific part of the School which made the School a real
success. I also want to acknowledge the administrative staff, computer and
library staff as well as the care-takers of foreign visitors at Abdus Salam School of
Mathematical Sciences, who were responsible for the day to day smooth running
of this research school. I specially want to commend the efforts of Mr. Ejaz Malik
(Director Administration & Finance) and Mr. Awais Naeem (my Secretary).
