SPONSORSHIP PACKET
HOT WHEELZ is an all-female Formula SAE Electric team
dedicated to PROFESSIONALISM, MENTORSHIP, and
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, providing students with the
opportunity to gain hands-on design and build experience.
Who is RIT Hot Wheelz?
We are the RIT Hot Wheelz Formula SAE Electric Team, a
group of undergraduate women engineering students
stemming from the Kate Gleason College of Engineering
at the Rochester Institute of Technology. We come from all
different backgrounds, experience, majors, and interests,
but we come together to form a team of innovative and
creative race enthusiasts.
Our unique team fosters an environment of learning and
teaching, where members have the opportunity to try something
new every meeting, and mentorship is highly encouraged.
Learning from each other in a hands-on, practical application not
only emphasizes concepts that have been taught in class, but
bonds our team and creates friendships that last beyond race
day.
Where Have We Been?
2012 - ELECTRIC DRAGSTER COMPTETITION
The Hot Wheelz electric vehicle team was started by a few female
engineering students, an enthusiastic advisor, and a vision to compete in
an on-campus electric vehicle competition. In our first year as a team, we
took 1st place in an electric dragster race out of 12 teams.
2013 - ELECTRIC ENDURANCE COMPETITION
We competed in an electric endurance competition that required us to
redesign a Power Wheels vehicle with the goal to complete as many laps as
possible in an hour. We took 3rd place out of 15 teams and won the
2014 - ELECTRIC AUTOCROSS COMPETITION
We competed in an electric autocross race which required us
to focus on having speed and drivability to complete the course
in the fastest time. We took 3rd place out of 12 teams.
Where Are We Going?
2016
We have had a history of
excellence in our on-campus
races, and are ready to take
our skills to the next level by
getting involved in a more rigorous competition. We will spend the next two years designing and
building a Formula Electric car from the ground up. In April 2016, we will compete in the Formula
Hybrid (Electric Only Category) event in Loudon, NH. (http://www.formula-hybrid.org/ )
Current Progress
TEAM MEETINGS—
Our highly dedicated team meets three times a week to
research, design, and build. We have specified mechanical
and electrical teams, which are further split into subgroups
to divide and conquer each part of the complex system.
This allows each member to take responsibility for a
specific aspect of the design process.
CHASSIS DESIGN—
Due to the complexity of creating a Formula SAE Chassis, three team
members developed a proposal to design and analyze the chassis in a
3-credit engineering course format. This allows the team members to
dedicate class time to focus on developing different design concept
iterations to create the optimal chassis design. This course will be
offered to a limited number of students each year.
SENIOR DESIGN—
One of the Multi-Disciplinary Senior Design Projects through
the College of Engineering involves designing an electric test
bench to troubleshoot and test performance parameters of
the vehicle’s powertrain system. This is a major benefit to
our team because it allows the electrical team to test their
system while the mechanical team builds the chassis and
frame.
