Preface
Revised: January 2013, OL-28018-01
Cisco Videoscape Distribution Suite (VDS) Transparent Caching (TC) Analytics provides visibility into
network performance, subscriber trends, and cache content. This business intelligence engine leverages
industry leading technology for the monitoring, reporting, and analysis of key performance indicators
(KPIs) with unique insight from the Cisco VDS TC cache engines.
The core of the Cisco VDS TC Analytics solution consists of KPIs and a Cache Detail Record (CDR)
database, which the VDS TC Analytics server uses to collect and store information from the Cisco VDS
TC cache engines. Cisco VDS TC systems on the network are connected to the foundation over the ISP
management network. Details from these cache engines are aggregated and analyzed to enable a
network-wide view of traffic, as it is delivered from the perspective of the VDS TC cache engines.
Administrators access this information through a central Cisco VDS TC Analytics server by viewing
dashboards and pre-defined reports, and can perform on-demand analysis of the network.
Analysis is delivered for all levels of the organization in a variety of displays. Different report packages
are available for various levels of the organization:
•
Network engineers obtain the details required for managing and expanding their networks.
•
The finance department can gain visibility into savings and growth planning.
•
Executives can draw summaries based on media trends and subscriber patterns
•
The marketing team can acquire insight necessary to develop new products and services.
Information is presented as webpage dashboards, which provide quick access to information, or in PDF
and HTML formats.
This preface describes terminology that is used in the Cisco VDS TC Analytics Software. This preface
contains:

VDS TC Analytics translates the data that is generated by VDS TC cache engines and displays it in
charts and data tables designated according to specific Cisco VDS TC Analytics user groups, such as
network engineers and operators, marketing personnel, and executives.
For each organizational user group, VDS TC Analytics presents pertinent information in predefined sets
of displays. The At a Glance dashboard is the summary page that opens for each of the user groups,
delivering an immediate overview at patterns and trends. At a Glance reports present the daily summaries
for the time frame you select, according to daily average values, breaking down the information by
services and protocols. Plotted comparisons of information visually convey the behavior of traffic, as it
is served from the VDS TC cache engine (cache traffic) and from the world (clear traffic). You can easily
list all charted data in numerical values to enhance your insight.
From this personalized dashboard look, you can drill down for more detailed analysis available through
the Data Mining dashboard. The Data Mining reports offer advanced filtering capabilities, according to
five minute polling, for the comparison of KPIs across services and protocols over any time frame.
Aggregate views for the entire network can be compared by IP address, zone, POP, or individual VDS
TC systems.
You can save or print every chart and data table in PDF or HTML format.

Terminology
The VDS TC Analytics Terminology table describes terms and concepts that apply to the VDS TC
Analytics Software.
Table 1
VDS TC Analytics Terminology
Term
Description
AVG
Average
Bytes Hit Ratio (BHR)
The number of bytes of cached out traffic divided by the total number of
bytes of traffic, whether it was cached or not. For example, a 60% bytes hit
ratio means that 60% of the overall bandwidth came from the cache and
40% came from the world.
cache in
A connection where the object requested by a subscriber does not exist in
the cache (which creates a “miss”), and the requested incoming data from
the world is stored in the cache.
cache
Traffic served only from VDS TC.
cache out
A connection where the object requested by a subscriber exists in the cache
(which creates a “hit”), and the request is served from the cache as outgoing
traffic to the subscriber.
cache productivity
The total cached out traffic divided by the total cached in traffic.
cache quality of
experience (QoE)
The average delivery speed of traffic that is served from VDS TC per active
subscriber. QoE is analyzed by comparing cache QoE with clear QoE.
CDR
Cache/Content Data Record
clear
The status of a subscriber request when the requested file segment does not
exist in the cache. Subsequently, this object is either cached in or forwarded.
It is considered as traffic that is delivered directly from the Internet.
clear QoE
The average delivery speed of traffic served directly from the Internet (VDS
TC clear) per active subscriber. QoE is analyzed by comparing clear QoE
with cache QoE.
CLI
command-line interface
CMDB miss
The status of a subscriber request when the requested file segment does not
exist in the cache due to an unexpected deletion or corruption.
data
A connection where P2P or HTTP file segments are transferred.
data non-data ratio
The ratio of data to non-data. The average data non-data ratio is between 1%
and 10%.
downstream
Objects transmitted from the world to the subscriber. Also called W2I.
EMS
Electronic Management System
forward
The process of forwarding an object directly to its requesting subscriber
without caching it. This is applied to an object that does not yet exist in the
cache. At this stage, it is only listed in the cache, according to the predefined
license rules of the platform (see verify), and will only be cached upon
future request.
hit
The status of an ISP subscriber request when the requested file segment
exists in cache. Subsequently, this object is cached out.
hit miss ratio
The number of hits divided by the number of misses.

groups to which a user belongs help determine the permissions of the user. Users can be assigned three
different types of permissions:
•
Admin: A user that has been assigned to the Admin group can access all functions that are available
from the Site Administration page. This includes access to tools (such as upgrading the software and
license management), managing users, configuring notifications, and managing the physical
administration for POPs, systems, and zones.
•
User: A user that has been assigned to the User group can only mange the physical administration,
which includes managing POPs, systems, and zones.
•
Standard User: A user that has not been assigned to any groups is considered a “standard user”. A
standard user cannot access any of the configuration options available from the Configuration tab,
including being able to view a list of systems and their status.
If the user needs to be added to a group, choose the desired group from the Available Groups list and
click the right arrow, or double-click the group. This moves the group to the Chosen Groups list.
Step 12
