Project 4:
Market infrastructure
and facilities
Main Undercover Area
Bambui’s Main
Market
Stall Area
Proprietors constructing and establishing small huts and stalls that
sprawl outside the designated market area.
Proprietors not using existing structures within the market:
Problems
 Concrete slabs used to display food are too high
 Under-utilized facilities
 Market layout
Need to encourage proprietors to use our solutions and continue to
use them.
Under-utilised undercover area
 One of the main issues is that the community is not using the main
undercover area to set up their stalls and sell their products.
 Concrete slabs too high.
Solutions
 located to deep in the market.
 Lower the slabs - more appropriate height.
 Make a clear pathway through the market to the main undercover
area.
 Increase the number of customers reaching the area.
 Encourage proprietors to set up their stalls in the building.
Concrete slabs too high
 Knock out the concrete slabs - currently 1.5 meters high.
Solutions
 Cut slots in the existing stands for the slabs, around 1 meter high,
and fix wooden planks in as a replacement.
 Wood is a cheap, easy method
 Creating a more appropriate height for displaying food and other
products
- Knock out the concrete
slabs
- Fix wooden planks in as a
replacement.
-Wood is a cheap, easy
method
- More appropriate height
for displaying food
Market layout
Solutions
Waste
With the new layout:
 Better circulation - more walkways
New Layout
 Better access to the main undercover building by creating a
straight line walkway from the main road to it
 Sheds are utilized more since they will be closer to the stalls
 Overall, better allocation of space in the market
Virtual Tour
 Sustainability – Council members to regularly check and maintain
structures within the market
 Impacts on the community – should benefit sellers and buyers,
increase trade
Design
Considerations
 Community engagement – consult community with the ideas and
adjust according to feedback
 Environment and materials – Increased number of bins and
materials are locally sourced and reused
 Cost and economic benefits – low cost project and increased
trade as a result of new layout
 Give a detailed plan to the local council, proprietors
 Discuss plans with proprietors during a market day
Construction /
implementation
 Get feedback and any changes they think would work
 Edit plan accordingly and get the council to begin work
 Moving stalls and tables, making pathways and doing work on the
slabs in the main shed.
