Who: Undergraduate students seeking a four-year degree and Elementary School (K-6) Certification in the State of Tennessee
What: A four-year 120+ hour degree program consisting of approximately 60 semester hours of required courses hours in to
complete the A.S.T-K6 (Associate of Science of Teaching) through VSCC and approximately 60 hours of required courses for the B.S. (Bachelor of
Science Degree) through TSU at the VSCC campus.
Where: Volunteer State Community College and in clinical placements Sumner County Elementary Schools
When: A.S.T.: Days, Nights, Weekends, and Web-Based Courses (Summer, Maymester, Fall, & Spring during Years 1 and 2)
B.S.: Approximately 2- 2 ½ days (Fall/Spring Semesters during Years 3 and 4 –FULL Time during final Semester)

Get Started: Apply for admission to Volstate and consult with a Volstate A.S.T. Academic Advisor

2. Successfully complete all requirements for the A.S.T. –K-6 (including Praxis 1 or ACT requirements)
3. During the final Spring semester of your A.S.T. program, apply for:
a. Admission to Tennessee State University and
b. Admission to the Teacher Education Program at Volstate for the following Fall
(Years 3 and 4-TSU at VSCC)
4. Upon acceptance, begin two-year (Fall/Spring +Fall/Spring) B.S./K-6 Licensure program at VSCC through TSU
5. Pass all required Praxis II exams prior to your final semester (Residency 2/Student Teaching).
6. Successfully complete all course, clinical, Residency (Student Teaching), and Exit requirements.
TSU Teacher Education Program Admission Requirements
Applications to TSU Teacher Education at VSCC will be available online and in Gibson Hall 101 at VSCC in October for the
following Fall Admission Date.

Minimum 2.75 GPA
Praxis I: Reading(174), Math (173), Writing (173) OR proof of ACT Score: 22 or above (composite)
C or bettter in all Math, History, and Science Courses
C or better in all English Comp and Education courses
Acceptable Professional Disposition Rating (e.g., professionalism, behavior, character, and demeanor of a teacher)
“Clean” Background Check
Acceptable Ratings on Teacher Education Admission Interview (scheduled after above requirements are met)


TSU@VSCC Elementary Education Program
1. Is the TSU Teacher Education application the same as admission to Tennessee State University?
No, you must apply separately for admission to Tennessee State University. You can apply online at
www.tnstate.edu
2. Do I have to submit official transcripts from all of the institutions that I have attended?
Yes, you must submit official transcripts from institutions attended to TSU admissions and with your
Teacher Education Application.
3. Will all transcript GPA’s be included in Overall Combined GPA?
Yes. When you transfer to TSU, all coursework from all institutions will be factored in to your overall
combined GPA.
4. If I have my transcripts sent to TSU Admissions and Records, do I have to send them to the Teacher Education
Office, too? Yes, send them separately to both offices and keep and official copy for yourself.
5. When and Where should I take the Praxis I (Reading, Writing, and Math) if I do not have ACT score of 22 or
above? You can register through Prometric Testing at 615-248-7120 or visit www.prometric.com OR through
www.ets.org. You should take them during the Fall semester of your Sophomore year of A.S.T. or early Spring
semester before TSU Teacher Education Application Packets are due.
6. How will I know if I’m officially admitted if Admission Interviews will be held in August?
If you have received your A.S.T. K-6 on or before August, 2013 and/or have submitted all application
materials and met all requirements for Admission (e.g., Passing ACT/SAT or Praxis I scores, GPA 2.75+, 2
acceptable Disposition forms) you are eligible begin the program Fall 2013.
7. Once I am admitted to the TSU program at VSCC, when can I register for classes?
As a Transfer student, you will not be able to preregister. Registration opens for Transfer students in
August. Details will be provided at Orientation. (Your admission to the K-6 Teacher Education Program at
VSCC guarantees you a seat in the above courses.)
8. What History courses are required?
The only other History course that you will need that is not required for the A.S.T is Tennessee History.
African American History is included in your first semester, Junior Year as part of you TSU tuition. You
can take Tennessee History through Volstate or through TSU at any time before your Senior Year.
(The four History courses required for the B.S. Degree and Licensure include American History 1, American
History II, Tennessee History, and African American History)
9. Is a First Aid/CPR course still required?
The First/CPR course is no longer required, but CPR certification is required. You can complete CPR
certification by taking the course or by completing certification training through the Red Cross or another
program. You must simply provide documentation that you are certified.
10. What if I have already taken College Algebra and/or African American History?
An academic advisor will review your transcripts to confirm that the courses on your transcripts are
consistent with our requirements. If they meet our requirements, you will not need to take them.
11. Can I take any of the courses in the TSU K-6 program Junior/Senior Year during the summer or at night?

The only courses that you could take during the summer or at night are College Algebra, Tennessee
History. All other courses must be taken during the semester indicated on the predetermined days and
times.
12. Will I pay VSCC’s tuition or TSU tuition?
Once you are admitted to the Teacher Ed. program and to TSU, you are a TSU student and will pay TSU

13. Are there scholarships available?

14. What texts books are required during the first semester?
You will receive this information at TSU Teacher Education Admission Orientation.
15. Can I do Field Experience placements in schools other than in Sumner County?
During your Junior year, all placements will be in Sumner County designated schools. During your senior
year it may be possible to request a placement outside of Sumner County. (Please note that there are no
guarantees at this point as current policy is under review.)
16. Will I have to Student Teach for an entire year?
During your Senior Year, you will in be your “Residency” year. During Residency I, you will be in class or
in your K-6 field placement 2 ½ -3 days per week. During Residency II, you will be in your placement fulltime following the schedule of the school/district in which you are placed.
17. Will I be able to work during this program?
Most students work part-time during the Junior year and during the first semester of the Senior Year
(Residency 1). It is strongly recommended that students do NOT work during Residency II.
