Understanding
Ratios and Rates





Describe and represent a ratio relationship between two quantities, including part-to-part and
part-to-total.
Recognize ratios in a variety of contexts and translate ratios into words and words into ratios.
Identify the similarities and differences between ratios and fractions.
Explain and classify different types of ratios, including rate and unit rate.
Interpret problems in order to describe the relationship between quantities and identify the
unit rate.
Instructional videos in the hyperlinks above are meant to support C2.0 content,
but may use vocabulary or strategies not emphasized by MCPS.
The Common Core State Standards require a balance of three fundamental
components that result in rigorous mathematics acquisition: deep conceptual
understanding, procedural skill, and mathematical applications and modeling.

Topic 1: Understanding Ratios and Rates

At home, your child can…
, 3:2,
,
3
2

Describe relationships of household items using ratios
o 2 pets to 5 people, 8 chairs to 3 couches, 2 pets to 5 pets

Show ratio relationships using multiple representations like part-to-part
and part-to-whole
o “8 chairs to 3 stools” could also be represented as 3 stools to 8
chairs, 3 stools to 11 seats or 8 chairs to 11 seats

Calculate the unit rate of items purchased from the grocery store. A unit
rate is a type of ratio comparing two quantities in which one of the
quantities has a value of 1.
o If a pack of six pudding cups cost $3.49, how much does each
pudding cup cost?

Determine the amount of ingredients needed when modifying recipes
o If our recipe makes 24 cookies and calls for 2 cups of flour, how
1
many cookies could we make if we only had 12 cups of flour?
Translate ratios into words, and words into ratios
o
The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the
zoo was 2:1, for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.

Interpret problems in order to describe the relationship
between quantities and identify the unit rate.
o We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of
$5 per hamburger.

Use ratio and rates to solve real-world problems.
o
A slime mixture is made by mixing glue and liquid
laundry starch in a ratio of 3 to 2. How much glue
and how much starch are needed to make 90 cups
of slime?
Parts
Quantities
5 parts
90 cups
1 part
90/5=18 cups
2 parts
2x18=36 cups
3 parts
3x18=54 cups
36 cups of starch
and
54 cups of glue are
needed to make 90
cups of slime.
Additional Practice
 Describing Ratios (three instructional videos)
 Modeling problems in a real world context and solving
 Identifying ratios (game)
 Identifying equivalent ratios (game)
