C2.0 Mathematics 6 Course Overview 2015-2016 Ms. Lorie Quinn [email protected] Mr. Chris Vinar [email protected] Mrs. Kelli Gonzales [email protected] Ms. Heather Sweeney [email protected] Mrs. Marta Riccio [email protected] OVERVIEW Curriculum 2.0 (C2.0) Math 6 extends students’ understanding of whole number and fraction concepts developed throughout the elementary grades. Instruction at this level will focus on four areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking. Topics of Study: Ratios and Proportional Relationships Understanding Ratios and Rates Application of Ratios and Rates Division of Fractions Multi-Digit Computation (dividing whole numbers and adding/subtracting decimals) The Number System Multi-Digit Computation (multiplying and dividing decimals) Extending the Number Line Order and Absolute Value Coordinate Relationships Multi-Digit Computation (dividing whole numbers and decimal operations) Exponents Expressions and Equations Algebraic Expressions Properties and Equivalency Equations and Inequalities Relationships between Variables Geometry and Statistical Relationships Understanding Area Volume Multi-Digit Computation (dividing whole numbers and decimals operations) Categorizing Data Analyzing Data Distributions Final Grade = 90% of Overall Achievement Grade + 10% of Overall Assignment Completion Grade FINAL GRADE CALCULATION Achievement assignment grades are calculated by dividing points earned by total points possible and are based on a percentage scale of A=90-100%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, and E=0-59%. Achievement grades are worth 90% of the final grade. Some examples of Achievement grades are concept checks, quizzes, classwork, graded homework, formative assessments and projects. Any assignment may be graded for Achievement and/or Assignment Completion. Homework for practice or preparation is included in the Assignment Completion grade and is worth 10% of the final over-all grade. There are NO Extra Credit or Bonus assignments. Grades will be updated every two weeks and can be accessed using Edline. Rocky Hill grading policy includes adding a .1 to identify late assignments, .2 to identify if the assignment was re-assessed, and .3 if a 50% minimum grade was awarded. C2.0 Mathematics 6 Course Overview 2015-2016 BASIC REQUIREMENTS When using percentages, teachers assign a grade no lower than 50% to an Achievement assignment that meets the basic requirements of the task/assessment. Teachers assign a grade of 0% to an Achievement assignment that does not meet the basic requirements. The basic requirements are determined by teachers based on various factors (including but not limited to assignment completion, pattern(s) of errors, lack of clarity, and evidence of thought) that show the student has begun to understand the information or concept, as measured by indicator. REASSESSMENT Assessments may be reassessed one time, and may be reassessed partially, entirely, or in a different format. The reassessment grade replaces the original grade. Reassessment opportunities are identified by the teacher prior to the original assessment. Students may be reassessed on Achievement assignments if they meet the following requirements: complete required assignments, complete the original assessment, complete reteaching/relearning activities as determined with the teacher, and schedule reassessment within instructional unit. LATE WORK A due date is the date students are expected to submit an assignment. Any Achievement assignment turned in after the due date will be penalized one letter grade. A deadline is the last date a teacher will accept an assignment (or the date the teacher returns graded assignments). An Achievement assignment not turned in or turned in after the deadline date will not earn credit (0%). Any Assignment Completion assignment that is provided for practice or preparation must be completed on time for full credit. Any late or incomplete Assignment Completion assignment may receive a 0%. Students who have excused absences have a responsibility to make up missed assignments. Teachers will assist students in making up their assignments and set appropriate deadlines. All due dates and deadline dates will be announced and may be the same date. HOMEWORK Homework will be given most nights (yes, even Fridays) because it is necessary to practice the skills we learn in class. Homework will be graded based on assignment completion (practice), or at times it may be graded for achievement. For homework assignments that are meant for practice, I will be looking for: *Completion *Evidence that effort was put forth *The student has shown all work 3 points = complete 2 points = nearly complete 1 = half complete or late 0 = incomplete We always go over homework in class, and will always check homework for completion and provide feedback in various forms. All math work will be completed in pencil. In circumstances where a student does not understand problems in the homework and therefore has work that is incomplete, or, is unable to do the homework because of a valid excuse, the student can bring in a SIGNED NOTE FROM THE PARENT explaining why the homework was unfinished. As a result of doing this, the student will receive an extension on completing the assignment. MATERIALS Every student will be required to bring the following materials to class EVERYDAY: Binder with a section for math, including notebook paper Checking Pen (red or blue preferred) Spiral Notebook for Math (Necessary for Unit 3: Ruler (cm/in), Calculator (graphing calculator not needed) Compass, & Protractor) #2 Pencils Student Assignment Book EXTRA HELP Positive Attitude Students wanting or needing additional assistance need to set up an appointment. Make sure you talk to one of us ahead of time to make an appointment to come in, so that we can be available to help you when you come. COMMUNICATION Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions or concerns. You can email or call the school 301-353-8282. Also, expect occasional contact from us throughout the year. It is important to us to not only build strong, personal relationships with our students, but with parents as well.
