Understanding the School Year
The school year is divided into two semesters.
First Semester: August to January
Second Semester: January to June
Understanding the School Year
Each semester is divided into two marking
periods; report cards are given out at the end of
each marking period.
Two-hour final exams are given at the end of the
semester.
Interim Reports – middle of each marking period
(warning that marking period grade is low)
Attendance Policy
Be in school every day.
When absent, bring a note from home signed
by parent/guardian (within three days)
Try to schedule appointments after school;
attend part of the day, if possible

Excused absences: illness, doctor’s
appointment, court, immigration, religious
holidays, death in family
Unexcused absences: leaving school without
permission, family travel, moving, parents
need student to translate or babysit

“E3:” Failure due to attendance
Students can fail after 5 unexcused absences.
3 unexcused tardies equal one unexcused
absence.

Requirements
 22 credits Total
 4 English (ESOL is an English credit)
 4 Math (incl. Algebra and Geometry)
 3 Social Studies (incl. U.S. History, NSL
Government and World History)
 3 Science (incl. biology and physical science)
 2 Adv. Tech or a foreign language (or a
vocational program)
High School Graduation

 1 Fine Arts
 1 Technology Education
 ½ Health
 Electives to complete 22 credits
Students receive .5 credits for each semester
class (for example, ESOL 3A is 0.5 credits; ESOL
3B is 0.5 credits)
Student Service Learning
Commonly called “community service.” Students
learn by helping people in the community
(volunteer at library, nursing home, help people
with disabilities, cleaning a park, etc.)
The number of hours assigned depends on
students’ enrollment date, with a maximum of 45
for students enrolling in high school. Check report
card for number of hours
