FEBRUARY 5, 2016 8:30-3:00 FORDHAM UNIVERSITY, LINCOLN CENTER CAMPUS This full day institute will highlight the importance of academic oral language development and its link to academic writing for ELLs. Recent literature supporting the importance of oral language development for ELLs will be connected to the expectations of the Common Core State Standards. In addition, specific strategies to scaffold writing will be introduced. The Curriculum Cycle is an approach of explicitly teaching each genre of writing by: 1) building background knowledge; 2) addressing the linguistic features (targeting the specific vocabulary) ; 3) and teaching the writing standards and forms of the genre. Within this presentation the presenter will also align the New Language Progressions for Speaking and Writing and the NYSESLAT Targets of Measurement within the two strands.
