Equity in Educa9on Speaker Series Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transforma9on of Schools TAC-‐D Centering Students How Educators can Fix Schools and Classrooms—A Cultural Relevance Perspective DR. DAVID E. KIRKLAND Author Professor Ac9vist Dr. Kirkland’s bold and nuanced presenta9on is based on over a decade of research aimed at understanding the complexi9es of teaching and learning in complex and culturally dynamic educa9onal seFngs. The goal of his presenta9on is to raise awareness of the effects of educa9onal injus9ce in the lives of youth in order to interrupt cycles of dispropor9onality. His presenta9on also aims to examine—perhaps more holis9cally—the peculiar deficit poli9cs pervasive in educa9on, exploring instead the power of the relevance, as it constructs and deconstructs opportuni9es to center students for learning and libera9on. His presenta9on closes by sugges9ng that, from a cultural relevance perspec9ve, urban youth take on new meanings beginning with a voice and a verb, where youth when affirm, valued, and respected have the power to transform the world inside-‐out.
