SUBJECT:
Non-GMO Formulas
Staff and participants may notice that there are non-GMO formula options appearing in stores.
Please note the important information below about WIC availability.
GMO stands for Genetically-Modified-Organism. A GMO is any organism whose genetic
material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.
Similac Infant Formulas
Some Similac products are now available made with ingredients which are of a “non-GMO”
source. This is true of Similac Advance and Similac Sensitive. The non-GMO options have the
same ingredients as the formulas not labeled as such, and are nutritionally the equivalent; but
the source of some of the ingredients differs.
•
The non-GMO 2-oz bottle versions of Similac Advance and Similac Sensitive are being
provided to patients in the hospital and are being distributed in discharge bags and as
pediatric office samples. The labels indicate that the products are non-GMO and contain
19 calories per ounce.
•
The non-GMO Similac Advance and Similac Sensitive formulas are not authorized by
Minnesota WIC and will not be available for WIC participants even with a medical
request.
•
For more information refer to the “Health Care Professional” letter from Abbott Nutrition
announcing New Similac Non-GMO Options included in today’s Wednesday Update.
Gerber Good Start Soy
All Gerber infant formulas are non-GMO, except Extensive HA formula. Gerber Good Start
Soy, the Minnesota WIC contract soy formula, is non-GMO.
