ABSTRACT
CROSS SERIES
by
Joe Russell Andrade
Master of Arts in Fine Arts
The visual power of the Cross Series lies in its simple,
direct expression of contrasts and oppositions.
Similar to the
oriental syzygy (the yin yang symbol), the expression_-is symbolic of the tendency of the hwnan mind to weigh often opposing
factors in an attempt to reach various depths of understanding
or decision.
Every aspect of the work plays with contrasts and
oppositions in the language of color, line and form.
Diva
Its flat,
dimensional format strongly insists on being three dimen-
sional.
It accomplishes this by way of its pierced pl.:1ne and
the way it is mounted, demanding space as part of its structure.
Through tension, the control gesture neutralizes the expressionist gesture; the geometric hard edge holds the soft, viscous
paint at bay; form versus the formless.
the vertical opposes the horizontal.
Within the cross itself,
The color events take
place on a ple_ne surface, but by dint of their natural qualities,
iv
insist on three dimensional spatial distribution.
The frame acts as the universe of discourse.
It centers the
cross as the nucleus of activity from which all its proposed activities radiate.
Combination of the frame and cross creates a
unit which may be combined or conjoined with other similar units
in any number of compositions.
The work talks about myself in the process of perceiving,
unders·tanding and utilizing my essential identity and weighing
the consequences with a role in the perception of essential reality.
Each work produced is a point of revealment - what I
have found and what I understand at its time of inception.
