ABSTRACT
CANVAS SCULPTURES
by
Frank Zygmunt Furgal
Master _of Art in Art
The canvas sculptures that_I have constructed are
investigations of spatial ambiguities with particular
emphasis on the illusion of depth.
One of the methods I
have employed is geometric trompe l'oeil in which converging planes appear to be three dimensional and in reality
are restricted to two dimensions.
My sculptural spaces were actualized through the use
of color and form.
Color and form were used to express my
personal feelings.
Sensitivity to color became an import-
ant aspect of cueing my emotional responses.
These respon-
ses began to appear in my work through the increasing
awareness of color variation and simultaneous contrast.
This new awareness gave me the needed freedom to expand my
forms.
Forms composed of geometric planes created strong
dynamic movements and relationships which at times opposed
each other and forced extensions of spatial ambiguity and
1
at other times created a totally new environment.
My intention to become involved in atmospheres through
the use of color and space reflects a need to construct a
place for myself.
As a result of this involvement, I
look at my sculptures as a place to go or to be, such as
an open field; as a new point of divergence.
The very
freedom of this openness is expressed in spatial ambiguities, and the illusions of depth of field.
These words express my feelings when I look at my
sculptures:
hue
idea
strength/softness
size

contrast

Example:
Canvas XVI.
The color use of green neutrals focuses
one's eyes to the center red opening, thus creating an
illusion of space, then one's eye follows the form back
to the green for a quieting effect.
