• In fixed function logic, the logic function are set by the manufacturer and can not
be altered

• The Major categories of user programmable logic are PLD & FPGA

SPLD
• SPLD (Simple Programmable Logic Device)
The SPLD was the original PLD and still available for small scale application. Most
SPLD are in one of two categories : PAL & GAL

CPLD
• Essentially, the CPLD(Complex Programable Logic Device) is a device containing
multiple SPLDs and can replace many fixed function ICs

FPGA
• FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) is generally more complex and
has much higher density than a CPLD.
• The 3 basic elements in an FPGA are the logic block, programmable
interconnection and I/O block.
