Redland Middle School PTA Meeting Minutes January 12, 2016 Attendees: Lynne Sager, Deirdre Appel, Beatrice Hanson, Kim Marshall, Dawn Trahern, Amy Crawford, Everett Davis (principal) The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm. Redland PTA President Deirdre Appel welcomed everyone to the meeting. Steve Chaiken, Assistant States Attorney, gave a special presentation on “Stop the Bullying and Cyber Safety” followed by some questions and discussion. Treasurer’s Report (Deidre Appel) A grant request to fund Shakespeare Theater Company workshops for the 8th grade English classes was approved. Applications for other grants are encouraged. Presidents Report (Deidre Appel) -There will be a Social, Fri., Jan 15 with the theme Football Frenzy. Volunteers are needed. -There has been a request to hold a joint Restaurant Night with Cashell Elementary. -There will be an Honor Roll Celebration on Feb. 4 th. -Thanks offered to Beatrice Hanson and Taline Diarbi for their work on the staff appreciation activities. -A Smoothie Bar for staff is planned on Jan. 22. Principal’s Report (Everett Davis) -Thanks to the PTA for all their support -Redland joined a program involving Lockheed Martin that was offered at Magruder High School. The 8th Grade Team picked several students to attend. -Spirit Week, Honor Roll and the Jazz Band Holiday Concert at Lake Forest were highlighted. -Semester Exams will be held Jan. 19 – Jan 22. The ean schedule can be found online. -There will be a Cluster Concert at Magruder High School on Feb. 3. -Report Cards and Honor Roles Celebration are scheduled also for Feb. 3. RADON -Reports on radon levels at Redland are good. Please check the Redland Website for any further information and updates. A mitigation plan is in place. Solar Panels -Construction is complete. We are waiting now for the OK from Pepco to start saving energy. Bulldog Store -Open on the first Fri of the month during lunch periods. The Store is in great need to parent help. Parents can help sorting on other days if Fridays are not good for the, Please contact Mrs Harrison if you would like to help. Advisory -Interest has been expressed among some staff and students to revisit the issue of Advisory. The issue will need to be discussed with all staff, students and parents to know what people really want. Some teachers would like to use it as an opportunity to reteach and reassess students. Truancy Prevention Program -Police officers are serving as mentors with a group of students who have been identified as having attendance problems. 8th Grade Tours Mr. Geddes and Mrs. Kniss are leading quarterly field trips on weekends for 8th graders (accompanied by a parent) to various places in the region. They have been to Mt Vernon and the Capital so far. Meeting was adjured at 8:30 pm.
