Summer Reading Program Grade 10 “When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life‐giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young.” ~Maya Angelou Dear Parents/Guardians, Educational research confirms that reading is a core skill. Since students who read usually excel in all areas of study, Montgomery County Public Schools wants its students to benefit from summer reading. This helps prepare them for the upcoming school year and maintains their skills in reading, thinking, and vocabulary. We ask that incoming sophomores select one work to read over the summer. When the students return to school in the fall, they are expected to bring their completed assignments. Please support our efforts by encouraging your child to enjoy the summer reading. The Quince Orchard English Department. ___________________________________________ Dear Student, Because reading is integral to good thinking and writing, each student entering English 10 at Quince Orchard High School in August 2015 is required to complete a reading assignment in preparation for the fall semester. Read a biography, autobiography, or memoir. Take notes as you read in preparation for the analysis questions (printed on the back). Go to classroom.google.com. Sign in using your mcpsmd.net account. Add the “QOHS Summer Reading 2015” class. Use the code: d27bfk (if you don’t have a mcpsmd.net account, type this assignment and
print it out) Open the Summer Reading assignment. Complete the analysis questions in that document. Respond to each question on a separate page. Each response should be at least 250 words in length. Add a Works Cited Page to the bottom of your document. Go to the “Add‐ons” tab at the top of your document. Add the app “easybib”. Find the citation of the book you read and insert it to the bottom of your document. When you are finished, hit the “Turn In” button. Choosing a Book

Please do not select a previously‐read text or required school title. Select a work that is on or somewhat above your reading level. Check out a book from the QOHS Media Center that will be due when school starts next year or one from the public library. Students may, as another option, read their own books. Assignment

Answer each of the following analysis questions in a minimum of 250 words. Point of View‐ Point of view is an important tool with which the author conveys meaning. What point of view is the memoir/biography written in? By presenting the text in this point of view, how does the author reveal critical moments? Cite textual evidence. If it were written in another point of view, how would the text be different? Conflict‐ What is the main conflict in the memoir/biography? How does the conflict in the memoir/biography further propel the plot? Choose one conflict the character overcame. Cite textual evidence. Theme‐Theme is the purpose of the text, a lesson that can be learned. A theme is a statement in which anyone, anywhere can relate to it. A theme is not one word.
