Edline Helpful Hints

Helpful Hints when checking Edline
As you consider Edline, either as a student or as a parent, you should try to notice “patterns.”
 Congratulations if homework is being turned in completed and on time!
 Bravo if you are seeing few to no “Z’s” or “0’s”!
 Way to go if you are pleased with the grades you are seeing!
However, if you are beginning to see too many “Z’s” or “0’s” or if you are starting to get concerned about
your grades, you can almost always do something to fix this. (See the main Edline page in the “news”
section for an explanation about what each entry in Edline means). Here are some helpful hints and strategies
when you start noticing patterns:
Too many “Z’s” or “0’s”: This means you are not turning in assignments on time. Consider:
•
Talking with someone about how to better manage your time so that you can complete
assignments on time.
•
Working on homework during TAG or attending a homework club.
•
Calling the Homework Hotline and asking for help (this could be fun! T, W, Th 301-279-3234).
•
If possible, do homework right when you get home in a certain place each day (and then reward
yourself with something special when you are done!)
•
If you have a lot of homework, break down the homework into chunks so that you do not get
overwhelmed. (Take breaks!)
•
Complete harder homework first, and then not-so-difficult homework after that.
•
Completing homework the day that it is assigned: don’t put it off!
•
Clipping homework due the next day in the front of the appropriate section so that you do not
forget to turn it in.
Repeating lower grades and/or “0’s”: This means that you probably need help in a certain area:
•
If the lower grades are in areas marked HW (homework):
Consider using one or more of the strategies above and asking for help if you do not understand
what was taught in class.
•
If lower grades are in the areas of in-class assignments:
Make sure you ask the teacher questions if you do not understand what is being taught!
Make sure you are not sitting with class members who may be distracting you – ask to move!
Make sure you turn in what you are doing in class if you are supposed to!
•
If lower grades are in the areas of quizzes and tests:
Make sure you study some each night before the quiz/test if you are able to.
Set up a study schedule for when you will study.
Find someone to help you come up with study strategies that will help you the most.
Learn and use strategies for when you are taking the test (e.g., process of elimination).
Get plenty of rest and eat well each day and…
Don’t be anxious about the test; just do your best!
•
If lower grades are in the areas of SPECIFIC types of assignments:
With the help of a teacher or parent, find out if there are certain types of assignments with which
you continue to have difficulties; for example, do you continue to receive lower grades on:
 Writing assignments: find out where you need to improve, ask for help in that area, and practice.
 Certain sections of math: seek help from a parent or math teacher to help you understand.
 Labs in science: find out from the science teacher how you can do better in labs.
 FIND ANY PATTERNS IN LOWER GRADES AND THEN ASK FOR HELP IN THAT AREA!
Too many blank spaces on Edline:
•
Check with your teacher as soon as possible!
If you regularly check Edline, notice any patterns mentioned above, seek help from teachers and
parents, set your mind to doing the best you can, and then feeling good about that you tried your
best, you will eventually see an improvement!
