POOLESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL CLUBS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE OR START YOUR OWN! Updated 11/1/16 sh ANIME Purpose: To allow students to share their interests in Japanese and Korean anime films and television shows and to develop greater awareness of it as an art form. ART Purpose: To broaden the exposure to visual art processes and to accelerate the skill development of all PHS students who wish to learn the practices of successful artists. BLACK STUDENT UNION Purpose: For students (both Black and non‐Black) to come together and discuss issues surrounding the Black community both locally and globally. BOOK Purpose: To discuss books that we enjoy and books that challenge us. CHEMISTRY Purpose: To practice events for Chemathon at the University of Maryland. CHESS Purpose: To play chess and participate in chess competitions. COMPUTER TEAM Purpose: The computer team invites all students to learn more about new and interesting computer science topics. We also introduce members to various programming and cyber competitions and opportunities. CONSERVATION Purpose: To enrich students’ knowledge about the nature that surrounds them. This includes tree I.D., growing native trees/plants, and other environmental projects. DANCE Purpose: We are a group of students of all skill levels, styles, grades and houses who share the same interest and passion for dance. We perform at pep rallies, talent shows, and other events. The club meets frequently for choreography practices, dance battles, routine lessons, freestyle jams, and more. DEBATE Purpose DIGITAL ART Purpose: The club provides a forum for discussion, teaching, and advancement of the digital arts among the many talented artists of PHS. ENTREPRENEUR CLUB POWERED BY MIT LAUNCH Purpose: E‐SPORTS Purpose: Students will be able to meet other students that have the same interests in video games. We will discuss different competitive games, play them, and learn about the expanding E‐sports community. FALCON AMBASSADORS Purpose: The falcon ambassadors are a group of select ISP students in 11th and 12th grade who provide leadership and service to PHS and our community. Ambassadors are expected to participate in all meetings, events and activities planned by the group. All falcon ambassadors are expected to complete the ISP Certificate of Achievement. FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES (FCA) Purpose: To discuss Christianity and the Bible. Members don’t have to be athletes or Christian. FIRST ROBOTICS Purpose: FIRST TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE (FTTC) Purpose: FORENSICS Purpose: Forensics provides students the opportunity to speak competitively against other MCPS students through original speeches and dramatic interpretations of multiple genres of literature. FRENCH Purpose: To promote French language and culture through conversation, food sampling, crafts, and film. Special events – National French Week and National French Contest GAMING/SSB Purpose: The gaming club is a place for students to participate in a competitive gaming tournament environment. GAMING REVIEW Purpose: To play, rate, and review video games in a safe and fun environment. Writing reviews will help improve literary skills and allow students to practice journalism. Students will also learn social skills and teamwork. GAY STRAIGHT ALLIANCE Purpose: A club that provides a welcoming and safe atmosphere for all students who are interested in promoting tolerance and acceptance for all groups of people. GIRLS CAN CODE, TOO! Purpose: To teach girls how to program in the company of other girls in an environment that provides the students with more comfort and confidence. PHS GREEN Purpose: A club at the high school level that promotes environmental awareness. HERO Purpose: Bullying prevention, anti‐bullying, mentoring at the local middle and elementary schools. HISPANIC HERITAGE ASSOCIATION Purpose: To promote and celebrate Hispanic heritage within Poolesville High School HISTORY Purpose: To promote the discussion and learning of all historic topics; to support local historic organizations and to communicate visiting and volunteer opportunities within the field of history. HUMANS OF PHS Purpose: To share the stories of teachers and students at PHS. The club was created in order to spread positivity, hope and motivation to students. These stories are shared on Instagram, Twitter, and a website. InvenTeam Purpose: To create an environment that allows students to explore STEM areas such as computer science and engineering for the purposes of helping others, expanding our interests and skillsets, and competing in nearby competitions. KIDS ARE SCIENTISTS, TOO (KAST) Purpose: The club is run by devoted students with an interest in science. The club creates fun and interactive 1 hour session plans about a topic of science that is used to teach 4th and 5th grade students at Poolesville Elementary School to increase their interest in science. KIDS FOR WISH KIDS Purpose: National club that fundraises for the Make‐A‐Wish Foundation, which sponsors the wishes of kids with life threatening diseases. LEO Purpose: A service‐oriented club that offers students the opportunity to provide volunteer services within their community, locally, nationally, and internationally. LITERARY MAGAZINE Purpose: Lit Mag at PHS selects student‐submitted works of art and writing to create a school wide showcase of artistic and creative talent within the magazine. MATH TEAM Purpose: The math team invites students from all grades and houses to join and train for the county‐organized math meets and other math competitions. The math team also promotes the enjoyment of math. MIDNIGHT PLAYERS Purpose: A dramatic theatre troupe that produces and performs two main stage productions each year; a dramatic play and a musical. Additionally, the students direct and produce a show of one acts and cabaret entitled Midnight Madness. MINDFULNESS Purpose: To learn the practice of sustained focus, self‐regulation, self‐exploration, and self‐liberation with an accepting, open and kind attitude. This practice can produce calmness and expanded awareness MOCK TRIAL TEAM Purpose: Mock Trial is a team that competes in the Citizenship Law Related Education Program’s Maryland State Mock Trial Competition. Each year the competition is a new legal case ‐ either civil or criminal in nature ‐ that challenges students to think critically about timely issues. Acting as attorneys and witnesses, students portray defense or plaintiff/prosecution and are scored on their performances by judges or attorneys. Tryouts for the team of 12 students begin in Early October. The team meets weekly until January when practices become more frequent. The competitions take place in the evenings in Rockville during the months of February and March. MODEL UN Purpose: Teaches students how to research and then argue the position of a country on a topic of international significance during a competitive United Nations simulation with students from around the world. NaNoWriMo Purpose: A one‐month club that offers a support network for students participating in the NaNoWriMo competition. The goal is to write an entire novel during the month of November. NATIONAL SCIENCE BOWL TEAM Purpose: To prepare the school’s national science bowl team to compete in the regional competition in January where teams from multiple countries come together to face off in a quiz bowl tournament using their knowledge of science and mathematics. NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS (NSBE) Purpose: To increase the number of culturally black (and other) engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. ORCHESTRA Purpose: The PHSO wants to foster interest in classical music and give back to the Poolesville community. Students who love classical music but cannot plan in an orchestra and students who love classical music will be able to explore new and old music. PAWS FOR A CAUSE Purpose: Complete service and outreach programs to help benefit the Humane Society PHYSICS OLYMPIAD Purpose: To create and train a team of physics enthusiasts to take the F=MA Physics Olympiad test in January. We will practice and solve problems together year round PING PONG Purpose: The Ping Pong club is open to any student who enjoys playing ping pong or would like to learn how to play. POLO Purpose: POOLESVILLE LEADS Purpose: To empower leadership in our members as well as in our community through fundraising for charities, volunteering, and encouraging elementary students to discover their own leadership potential. THE POOLESVILLE PULSE Purpose: To publish the print and on‐line versions of the school newspaper. RED CROSS Purpose. The goal of the club is to provide volunteering opportunities made available by the Red Cross organization. We will meet twice a month to discuss and arrange meetings for volunteer jobs. Red Cross club members will become official Red Cross members after an orientation by the Walter Reed Hospital charter. ROCK BAND Purpose: Rock Band is a club for experienced musicians who want to collaborate and create new music and play in live settings. SCIENCE OLYMPIAD Purpose: The club’s main goal is to create and prepare teams for the Science Olympiad competition. The competition features events in fields of science ranging from etymology to protein modeling. SHAKESPEARE Purpose: 2CONNECT Purpose: Meet scientists in many fields and find out how they got to where they are today. THEORETICAL PHYSICS Purpose: To spark curiosity among peers about how the world works by exploring a multitude of concepts in modern physics. Concepts such as Einstein’s theory of relativity and quantum mechanics are a major focus of discussion. UNCONVENTIONAL ENGINEERS Purpose: Expose students to different types of engineers by attending conventions and talking to actual engineers and networking. WATER PROJECT Purpose: To raise awareness about and raise funds for the world water crisis, specifically with regard to the impact on rural, sub‐Saharan villages. YOGA Purpose: To provide students with a fun and healthy way to reduce stress and increase physical activity. .
