INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: 1. I have Internship on my schedule for next year. What should I do now? a. Make sure your application is complete b. Turn in your summer contact information card to Mrs. Lowe c. Secure a work site – Mrs. Lowe can help you. Do this as soon as possible. 2. Can an Internship by Paid? An Internship can be paid or unpaid. Many Internships begin as unpaid opportunities but can work their way into a paid opportunity if you are doing a great job. 3. I have a site in mind. What should I do now? Apply – make sure you have a copy of your Resume – (template available on SHS Website under Internship Department. Go for the Interview – Refer to your interview tip sheet. Criteria for an Approved Internship Work Site Student may not be employed in a business located in a private home unless the business meets the following guidelines: The business must hold a valid license and conform to tax laws, including the withholding of Social Security and Medicare for paid employment. There must be at least two adults employed on the premises by the business. Student supervision must be available at all times (at least two adults). 4. As an Intern am I just going to be filing and making coffee? Remember you are Interning to learn about the career field you would like to pursue in the future. The Internship should have an opportunity for skill development – As an Intern you will develop a Training Plan with the prospective employer to make sure there are clearly communicated expectations. You will have an opportunity to share your goals for the Internship. Many Internship become paid once you have learned the basic skill set necessary to fulfill the job. 5. What Official Paperwork do I need to Complete to participate in the Program? Memorandum of Understanding must be signed by the student, parent, manager/supervisor, and the Internship Coordinator. The State of Maryland Work Permit must be completed for each student, ages 14-17, before he/she is permitted to begin working. The application is available on line at the following web address https://www.dllr.state.md.us/labor/wages/empm.shtml#minorinst Transportation Form (MCPS form 560-31) must be completed by the Parent and Internship coordinator. Students must provide their own transportation. If driving to school students must purchase a parking permit and if they are taking public transportation they must pay their own fares to get to and from their site. 6. How many hours do I need to earn to get the Internship Credit and how do I plan my schedule with my employer? Plan for a required weekly ,Monday Seminar either 5th Period or Lunch Double Period Interns need to work a minimum of 8 hours a week Triple Period Interns need to work a minimum of 12 hours a week The minimum number of hours must be worked Monday – Friday and students are not required to work every day. The schedule can be mutually agreed upon with the employer. Students will receive ½ of an academic credit for each period.
