Language Policy
English is the language of instruction (LOI) for all courses except Language B
courses. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is offered for students
whose second language is English. These students take oral and written
language assessments to determine their placement in ESOL classes. When
ESOL students demonstrate an appropriate level of proficiency in English, they
transition from ESOL classes into LOI classes. Professional development is
provided for staff to learn instructional strategies to use in assisting ESOL
students in their classes. In addition, the accommodations for ESOL students
are posted for staff to download and use with these students in their classes. At
Springbrook High School, the following ESOL classes are offered: math, science,
humanities and ESOL.
The following Language B courses are offered at Key Middle School for all grade
levels: Spanish, French, Spanish for Spanish Speakers and ESOL. The following
Language B courses are offered at Springbrook High School for all grade levels:
Arabic ab initio, French, German ab initio, Italian ab initio and Spanish.
Students are assessed to determine their placement in advanced Language B
classes.
Students attending Francis Scott Key Middle School and Springbrook High School speak
many languages and come from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Opportunities for students to develop cultural understandings of their own and other
cultures are provided through curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
Examples include units of instruction, field trips to embassies and cultural centers,
ethnic heritage celebrations and clubs representing different nationalities.
