This year Springbrook has two Gates millennium Scholarship winners! 7 Fine Arts Department “TEAR DOWN YOUR WALL” Mural project will send a powerful message On Wednesday, May 14th, students Erick Orellana ’15, Aylin Juarez ’15, Kevin Turcios ’15, Gabe ’15, parent-advisor Arturo Ho and teacher-sponsor Jonathan Mann started priming Springbrook’s back parking lot wall with a fresh coat of white paint. They had just received a $500 mini-grant from the PTSA to complete the “Tear Down Your Wall” mural project. It started last year as a discussion between Mr. Mann and Erick about how everyone erects internal walls that impede their ability to learn, receive a high quality education, and open their mind to rich, creative, and imaginative possibilities. These walls need to be taken down. The idea has grown with Aylin, Kevin and many other students’ input, as a metaphor for how one should get the most out of their Springbrook education. The back parking lot wall is the perfect canvas for the student’s artistic training in painting a large-scale mural, and for giving a motivational purpose to the school’s community. Just like any site-specific work in the art world, the work has been vetted by Springbrook’s students, parents, faculty, and the administration, to make certain that the work truly represents the ideals of our community. By next week, the mural will be sketched out and the large areas to be painted will be filled in. The details should be finished within two to three weeks. Upon completion, projected for the first week of June, the students would like to have a little party reception for the Springbrook community to inaugurate the wall and discuss its purpose and potential for more creative community and participatory artistic actions. Any contributions for this reception would be greatly appreciated. Jonathan Mann ([email protected]) Chairman/Resource Teacher, Art Department Art students will transform Springbrook’s back parking lot wall with this large-scale mural, projected for completion the first week of June. The “Tear Down Your Wall” message encourages students to eliminate internal barriers that impede their ability to learn. When they can tear down their wall, they can open their minds to endless possibilities, and receive the most from their Springbrook education. 8 Science Department UPDATED INFORMATION!!!!
